The Revenant (2015)

Housekeeping note -- my local cinema was a little chilly, and this movie will make you feel very cold, so take along a warm outer garment.

They really should have named it "The Passion of the DiCaprio" on account of watching Leo endure the tortures of the dammed for 2 hours and 36 minutes.

Let me get this out of the way-- depictions of the grim, wet world, the cold, and particularly the outdoor action scenes were intense and masterful.

All this virtuosity in service of a simple revenge story weakens it as a whole for me.

French Trappers, American Trappers, Guides, Indians, Louisiana Purchase, etc. Could not a more robust plotline come from these rich sources?

Anywhoo, Tom Hardy channels his best Tom Berenger and nails it once again as the heavy. I f%^ing love this guy.

I give it a 7.5 bear claws out of 10 for lack of a really good story.

Love Live: the movie!

Like K-On! the movie, this is very Japanese stuff. Its superior to K-On! the movie in some ways as well, it's more diverse and dramatic. Main gripe was the J-pop song and dance numbers spread out through it, though I can almost enjoy it.

The Notebook (2004) - Nick Cassavetes

- I feel cheesy as hell but I LOVE that flick and I don't even like romance movie usually... This movie was an awesome emotionnal experience for me even If this kind of love is no longer here today. The storyline was beautiful and many part break my hear appart (didn't believe I actually said that). The cast is amazing and the connection between Gosling and McAdams is truly admirable. I cry during 20min at the end no joke... Cannot denied that it's cheesy but it deliver perfectly for me. A new movie in my Top 75.

Second viewing, and sure enough it failed to engross me as much as it did the first time I saw it. It was still pretty good, though. I haven't watched Purple Noon yet, but I might check it out sometime just for the sake of comparison.

Ragtime - 4/10

I only saw this because it was the only movie Cagney did, 20 yrs after his last one. I wish I hadn't saw this movie especially considering there are handfuls of movies I could have watched instead that I have at home. This does have about 20 well-known (and some fine) actors but wasn't good enough.

High-grade nature porn. Loved Hardy as much or more than DiCaprio. I was left confused by why all the reviews say the end was a mess...ended like I thought it would. Maybe I'm the mess.

Black Narcissus

Makes one realize just how bland and forgettable the films coming out today look. I'm tired of these "dark", colorless films that look sterile, flat,and cold.

One of the most gorgeous films I've ever seen; the color in this particular movie reminds me of Renoir's color features.

The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three
Joseph Sargent
A very entertaining 70's film, with some great actors and really interesting actors. Although some scenes made me cringe a little, the film delivered some great action scenes. Even if the storyline is basic, it is very well-paced and the ending compensates for it. However, I did think that the movie tried too much at being funny, resulting in some unnecessary characters.

As you can probably tell, I usually check out what is in the TCM On-Demand list before looking at premium channels!

W.C. Fields as Humpty Dumpty

This film was said to be amazing for it's time and it is a similar "head trip" to other renditions of the story, but it has the added limitations of the era it was made that adds to the surreal aspect of the story. Some say it's one of the truest film adaptations to Lewis Carroll's literary work, but like all film adaptations it does take certain liberties.
Interestingly, the film has several big name stars, but they are all covered by costumes, masks or make-up (notably, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, W.C. Fields).
Some of the masks lend a feeling of grotesqueness to the film because they are so archaic looking.
So, it's hard to rate it on overall quality because it has to be measured in the context of age & era. From a film history & novelty point of view it is quite fantastic. From a sheer entertainment POV, it is quite less so.

The Incident - 9/10

I saw the end of this film years ago, and remembered the plot line and found it! An amazing thriller with a lot of characters with their own issues. It's nice to see how their behavior changes depending on who is around. It reminds me of the system. Even though a tiny percentage runs the world, that apathy is impossible to fight, and allowing injustice to go on and on because it doesn't concern you is the problem. Most people conform or think it's none of their business - until it hits them directly, when it's usually too late.

Red. The color of love, anger, and pain all buried under a puritanical facade, bubbling and volatile. Bergman's Cries and Whispers is repressive chamber drama masterfully executed.

Trainwreck (2015)

Apatow helps Amy Schumer bring her stage persona to life. He's still afraid to kill his darlings or at least hire somebody to do it for him, but I can deal with 15 minutes of overkill and dubbing every possible joke into the final cut. That's his signature at this point and in the comedic movie drought thanks to television, it's kind of grown on me. I'd like to see him launch more talent this way. I wouldn't mind seeing the Jesselnik equivalent of this sometime in the future.

The General (1926)

This was my introduction to the legendary Buster Keaton and it did not disappoint. While I'm always wary that comedy will age like milk, this is fine wine. His knack for physical high jinks is universal. I really enjoyed myself though it runs out of steam a bit in the final act.

Fear and Desire (Stanley Kubrick, 1953) -

It has some good moments and ideas but the editing is just awful and the storytelling isn't that good, either.

Die Br�cke (Bernhard Wicki, 1959) -

German WWII-movie about a group of 16-year old students who were enlisted only a few days before the end of the war. Very effective! The Oscar-nomination (best foreign language) it received was totally deserved.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Steven Spielberg, 2008) -

I've only seen about half of Spielbergs filmography but i can't imagine he made a worse movie than this.
