Top must-see movies of all time?

I love movies and film in general, I love reading reviews and movie blogs on my free time, but... I've noticed, half of the time the references they make go right over my head.

I haven't seen a lot of movies, growing up we didn't watch many... I can remember about 3 times in which we went to go see a new movie in theaters. I'm 19 now, but still don't seem to go the movies much but I'm wanting to change that. But first, I kind of want to catch up on everything I've missed over the years. The really important or really good movies. I recently got Netflix, but I don't know where to start (movies not on netflix are also good!)

I have a ton of free time on my hands at the moment, almost to much. So I'm thinking now is the perfect time to catch up on all that I've missed. List all of the top must see movies that you can think of, doesn't matter which year.

I'm trying to throw together a list of 100 or so to watch. Thanks

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
1. Werckmeister Harmonies
2. Eternity and a Day
3. The Mirror
4. Persona
5. Once Upon a Time in America
6. 2001: A Space Odyssey
7. The Tree of Life
8. The Passion of Joan of Arc
9. Vertigo
10. Harakiri

Not 100, but seems like a good start.

Look, I'm not judging you - after all, I'm posting here myself, but maybe, just maybe, if you spent less time here and more time watching films, maybe, and I stress, maybe your taste would be of some value. Just a thought, ya know.

Awesome, thanks!

Also, I just found IMDb top 250 list, is that a legitimate decent list? I tried to link it but can't post links yet.

Finished here. It's been fun.
The IMDB top 250 is a good entry-point if you're getting into cinema.

what kind of movies do you like, J3K7?

can you give us an example of one or several you like?
I like all kinds of movies to be honest. Horror, comedy, action.

Recently I've been trying to watch lots of movies, and the recent ones I've seen that I've liked the best would be Wolf of Wall Street, 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, and just saw the Lego Movie yesterday which was good

Those are all new movies, but I haven't watched a ton prior.

Bluedeeds list looks good, except I've never really heard of any of the top ones at all. Just recently I've been really interested in movies, so I'm trying to catch up on all of the classics, commonly known ones, and just the must-see ones. Because when I watch/read reviews and movie blogs I don't know what they're talking about a lot of the time when it comes to the references, because I haven't seen the majority of these movies.

Thinking of attempting to watch the entire IMDb 250 list, simply because they look like popular well known movies. I'm just surprised Ghost Busters and Forest Gump and stuff aren't on it (I've never seen either of these, but I thought they were classics lol).

It’s A Classic Rope-A-Dope
Ill give you some of my faves that are on netflix since you have quick access:

Fargo
Pulp Fiction
Raging Bull
The Apartment
Lost In Translation

bluedeed's list has some good movies on it, although they're not exactly the easiest movies to enjoy
Go ahead and try not to enjoy Trouble in Paradise and The Young Girls of Rochefort, I challenge you!

hey, not saying there aren't enjoyable movies on your link, there definitely are. there are also movies on there that would have turned me off to movies early on when i perhaps didn't really know what i was getting into

to J3K7, not saying you should disregard the list bluedeed posted, just simply wanted to give you an alternative five... five that i would have enjoyed right off the bat when i began my movie-watching

it's all really trial and error. you will probably run into movies sometimes you can't get into. i also hope you'll find some early on that you love that will inspire you to find more good ones

good luck with your viewing

Awesome, thanks everyone I'll definitely check out all of the ones mentioned here.

Also, any recommendations on where to find some of these movies? I know a few of them are on Netflix, but how about the ones that aren't? Any good websites?

The Shawshank Redemption

It's in bold. So I mean business. It's what got me into movies when I was a teenager.
