Did anyone else see this? I thought it was very well done for a made for TV. Very Dark, not much cheese at all, good characters, and the physics in space looked really convincing. Quite a change from the 70s disco space opera.

Opinions anyone?

I didn't think it was particularly dark. Darker than Buck Rogers, sure - (but so is a luminous fish plugged into the national grid). It was enjoyable tho - all the star-wars style craft and metallic baddies.

I thought it was dark in the way it portrayed the human race as a failed race at spome points, The harsh decisions they had to make about sacrificing some folks to the cylons. Also the parallel they drew between Baltar and the President pertaining to the selfishness they both felt at the annihilation of their race. Speaking of the Annihilation of the human race, I find that somewhat dark I guess.

There was some stuff I didn't like, such as the goofy sex scenes that were just kind of funny, and a couple of random characters they tried to develop with no luck (The presidents aid and his out-of-nowhere tryst with a random crew member). I know they were using these characters to make a point about getting the race going again, but they had built up virtually no affinity for those characters and they seemed thrown in.

Other than that, there were some truely great moments like the little girl in the botanical ship and the final confrontation between the two base stars and the Galactica.

I really enjoyed it and thought that for TV, they did pretty well and didn't take the easy way out with the plot with just having the humans all of a sudden win (like the old show) against overwhelming odds.

I grew up watching Battlestar. I enjoyed the series and will give this new one a chance. I haven't seen it yet, taped it, so I hope to view it soon.

Ah. Guess my memories are a bit vaguer. I remember more the goofy relationships between the pilots, and the colourful shore-leave on occasion. Yeah, now you mention it - the rest of humanity had been destroyed hadn't it. - i do seem to remember i watched both series - and the them-vs-the-two-big-bad-guy-stations thing rings a bell. My impression could be a british thing tho - all your programs are bright-n-sparkly compared to ours - Besides, my first introduction to sci-fi was the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy radio show when i was 5 - and that was about the whole planet earth having been destroyed (despite being a comedy ).

The spurious characters coming and going i definitely remember. Aside from that i just remember the main pilots (including "Face" from the A-team), big blue afterburners and pretty good stories about personal sacrifice and being trapped in burning-up/oxygen-leaking spacecraft and stuff. And wasn't one of the pilots the son of the main commander? (there's always got to be a father-son relationship hasn't there )

You are right. It wasn't particularly deep or introspective or complex, but I took it at face value. Swashbuckling space soap opera. The characters were fairly one-dimensional. Typical good vs Evil sorta thing. Starbuck(Dirk Benedict--Face from A-Team) was more fleshed out in the personality department. A scoundrel, lovable rogue who would always eventually do the right-thing. Apollo(Richard Hatch) was the son of Adama(Lorne Greene). The effects were first -rate for its day and that's what sunk the series. It was too damn expensive to be produced on a regular seasonal basis. I'll give the new series a shot. I do like things dark(loved Chris Carter's series Milenium, so that's where my tastes go!)

LOL golgot!!! Ya I started the thread to talk about the 2003 mini series on the sci fi channel. No wonder you thought it wasn't dark!!! The 70s series was pretty goofy, but I liked it back then, and it was not dark.

Anyway: This new mini series (not yet a series) is MUCH darker and had a much grimmer tone overall, from the characters to putting the viewer right in the middle of getting bombed off 12 different planets, then having to leave part of your family behind (to be vaporized) while relatively TINY group of people escapes (50k people all toll).

Sorry for the confusion

Ahhh, all clear. - i'll check it out if it find its way onto terrestrial.

Bumping this because this show is just FANTASTIC. Friday night's episode was incredibly good, with excellent character development and some impressive acting by Starbuck and the cylon agent she was interrogating. With talent like Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonald (whom I have tremendous respect for) on board, I knew there would be some great situations cropping up for developing character, and these characters have done that, but I was not expecting it from some of the bit players (the cylon agent, up until this point has had very little screen time and hadn't shown much ability). I continue to be more and more impressed as the series goes on....

Another bump, as season two starts tomorrow night!! In a strange and unusual move, NBC has already put the show into syndication after only ONE season, and the show is now sitting pretty in the top 6 rated dramas on television, cable or otherwise. This show is SO good, and so relevant to our times. I recommend people scope it out if they get the chance...

The Adventure Starts Here!
Sedai, I just saw a commercial for this new version/series last night and wondered why such a short ad fascinated me. (I too was thinking "1970s show.")

So, if someone hasn't seen season one, is there a way to see it without, like, buying a DVD? Does anyone know if Comcast's On Demand features it? Is Sci-Fi replaying season one, or any other channel?

The ad really did look good, despite my knee-jerk reaction to the 1970s series of the same name....

Well, you need to see the pilot film, which they haven't been running on re-runs. It is available for rental, though, and you won't have to deal with the commercials.... The rest of the series is in re-runs on sci-fi, and the new season starts TONIGHT!!!

Game over man..Game over!
Battlestar is on 2 nite!!! Helo and Starbuck are still stuck on Caprica..I wonder what will happen. I am soooooo addicted to this series hahaha

Cool interview with Lucy Lawless about the show. She guest starred on one of the Season two episodes "Final Cut" as a reporter, and she talks about why she thinks the show works as well as it does. Again, like other projects we have discussed in the past, she cites professionalism and great chemistry between cast and crew as elevating the show to the heights it has acheived. She also mentions an extremely open-minded view on the parts of the writers and the producers of the show, with input on the show accepted from everyone involved.

The second half of Seaon 2 starts tonight on Sci-Fi. Be sure to catch it!

AS a recent fan of the series, I have to say I am totally sold on it, although I always want to scream at the characters for stupidity.

I think that it is a pretty good Sci-Fi show. I like some parts of it, but I think that it reminds me too much of a soap opera at points. Overall it is a good series, but there are other series that I prefer more. But it is true that it is one of the darker Sci-Fi series, and it isn't cheesy. So it does have some good points.
