Hall of Fame
General Guidelines

*Note that the specific rules for each HoF can very and are always up to the host. This is not a list of rules but an explanation of how HoFs usually work so that those who’ve never joined an HoF can get an idea of the process.

Movie Nominations: Any movie under 240 minutes can be nominated, except for previous HoF winners. See the HoF Movie Archives for the list of past movie winners.

PM your nominations to the host and include: film title & year of release. Keep your nomination a secret until the unveiling of the films. The reveal date will be posted by the host.

Open Door Policy: For one week after the reveal of the movie nominations, the host will be taking new members. This gives people the chance to see what movies have been nominated before joining.

Length of HoF: There will be approximately one week of viewing time per movie. So if there are 10 movie nominations, then the HoF will be about 10 weeks long. The host will post the deadline to finish after the HoF starts.

During the HoF: Everyone watches the nominated movies and will discuss them in the HoF thread. You need to write at least a few sentences about your thoughts on each movie after watching it. Part of the process is discussion of the movies as a group.

Note: If you've seen a movie recently or have seen it many times you can skip watching it, otherwise you have to watch all nominated movies.

Requesting help to locate movies: If you have trouble locating a movie make a post and ask for help. When responding with a movie link send it by private message, don't post links or embed films in the HoF thread.

Dropouts: Members who don't finish will have their movie nomination removed from the HoF. Please make sure you have the time to complete this, it helps to start watching the films right away so you don't have a bunch of movies to watch at the end. If for any reason you do need to drop out, let the host know asap that you can't finish.

Voting: After you’ve watched all of the movies you will send a ranked voting list to the host. If there's 12 movies you will number your list 1-12 with #1 being your favorite on down to #12 being your least favorite. Keep your voting list private until after the final results are posted.

Scoring: After the host has received all voting ballots, the host will tally the points for each movie and present the results in countdown style.

The movie with the highest total points is inducted into the

Glad to see that you're taking over. I'd be willing to go through some of the Hall of Fames when i've got free time and get the placing of each film if you think it'd be good having that there. If you think it's pointless i'll just leave it, up to you.

Thanks for the offer. I have the points and placement for each of the movies in most all of the HoFs. I'm not sure if I will do that or not? I could if anyone wants to see it, that's what the 4th post is for.

I probably said this before but I had the flu really bad like a year ago and for 2 weeks I just set at my computer desk reading all of the old Main Hofs from the 1st one on.

I skimmed some of the longer post, but it was actually interesting, seeing how things had involved. And there's been some great films nominated in the past, which I would like to see myself.

BTW are you going to join the 15th? I hope! as we need people who are willing to discuss the movies in details, and you're good at that.

As much as i want to i'm really not sure. There's sooooo many films i want to watch right now that i already don't have the time for: 2017 films, directed by women films, 2010's foreign language films, 30's films, Buster Keaton Films, Woody Allen Films, Robert Alman Fims, etc, etc . I'm a maybe though. When does it start?

Thanks! It took a helluva a long time, way longer than I would have thought to do those three post. And like I said, Sean did tons of the hard work in gathering up the info.

Who's seeing this thread on a mobile phone? Can you guys see the posters clear enough to tell which movies they are?

Raul suggested around Christmas time, and I thought that sounded good. I'm not sure if it should be before Christmas or after? Maybe after?

I hear ya about not enough time to watch everything I want. That's an impressive list. I'm still working on watching Woody Allen films, 30s films and directed by women films...I haven't even seen many 2017 films yet (but need to).

Anytime around christmas would be best for me as that's when i'll have the most free time. Don't schedule it around me though as i said i'm a maybe right now. I'll see what's going on when it starts.

Cool! I should check out those links, each Hof is suppose to link to the thread.

EDIT: I see some of the old links I saved must have changed. I'll have them fixed in a jiffy.

Camo 12-09-17 02:39 PM

I've seen 37/42 of the winners. That's quite a bit more than i thought it would be. The ones i still have to see are: Sansho The Bailiff, Autumn Sonata, Contratiempo, Harvey Krumpet and The Miami Connection.

Three of them are mine

WOW! AMAZING set up, @Citizen Rules!!
When you remarked about a MoFo project in your Favorite 30s Actors/Actress Thread I was a little stumped - but now I see and I really love the layout and all the work that must of went into to. Great idea about the links for the HoFs AND putting who hosted them. Nice touch.
I could see how adding ranking might be cool, while at the same time having a link to go and see for anyone curious works as well.

And I agree, having Camo join in the next one would be pretty frickin awesome! And if ya can't, Camo, I DO respect how deep into other lists you're already in and love it when you visit and post, so. . . :)

As for the 15th, around Christmas sounds great. With the usual Announcement and so forth, you know the score, CR. With the 25th on a monday, perhaps the announcement in the middle of the week prior and then getting everyone together after the 25th?

Camo 12-09-17 02:47 PM

Just checked i've joined fourteen Hall of Fames. I barely joined any for a good while then i was in like 12 in a row  5 general ones and 9 specialty ones.

Re: Movie HALL of FAME Archives & Info

QUITE the veteran, Camo!
I've got 6 Specialities - 7 if I include the current 70's but I only have 3 of the main Hall of Fames so far.

Yup! now I can get back to my 30s Actors/Actresses list.

That sounds like a good plan, so that's what I will do. I'm hoping the Virgin Hof can be over so maybe some of the Virgins will also like Hofs enough to join the 15th:p

Thanks Mark

I always remember something that you once said, that I liked...You said that it's the movie that wins the Hof, not the person who nominated it...and I agree, it's all about the movies:)

Yeah, that was an excellent idea to get new people involved, I'm sure, depending on time and life, a couple of them just may get addicted like the rest of us lol

Edited in the amount everyone has won, Sane is the only one to have won 4 then it's me, gbg, Destiny, Citizen and Neiba on 3.

Obviously it doesn't matter who wins i just find it interesting.

I remember if Sane was in an Hof, you could look to his movie to do well. I think he only had one movie that people didn't like and that was Claire's Knee.

Bluedeed nominated Claire's Knee. Sane won that hall of fame with A Separation. I remember because it was my first HoF.

I wish I would have joined more Hofs as soon as I was here at MoFo, but I wasn't even sure what an Hof was at first:p

I wonder who's been in the most Hofs, I think Raul? maybe?

I'm guessing Cricket. It's you, Cricket, Sean, Raul and Neiba for the top five i think. Neiba has been gone for a while and Sean hasn't joined one for a while, then you didn't join the early ones so it's either Cricket or Raul. Raul has been in and out at times while Cricket has joined pretty much everything which is why i think it's him.

Love to see you back into an Hof, you were always a big part of them. I think the 15th will be small...when I hosted the 10th it was real small! only 8 members. I wonder what you have in mind for a nom? I bet it's good:p

Cosmic wants to run a Foreign one, she has been waiting for that for ages so i think that should be next. We should also do a directed by women one IMO, like we usually do for the Countdowns.

 Both would be pretty great. I think I have a film or two picked out for the Foreign one.

I really need to see more directed by women films. I went through my entire review thread of 737 movies as was shocked! to find out there were very few movies in there that were by women directors.

Here's a list of over 3000+ You may be surprised at some of them, i was at least.

Only seen 106 but i've got a list of 32 i'd be happy to vote for so i'm fine for the Countdown.

Ahh..I seen that link when you posted it before and it was a big help. I looked at the movies there and found a lot that I had not known were directed by women.

So far I know of 76 movies I've seen. You've watched 106 that's impressive.

I wish we had a thread for posting about directed by women's movies. I made a list of the one's I've seen and I'd like to see what others have seen too.

Spending days trapped in a car and cheap hotels with my parents is never sh1tloads of fun (and always involves lots of arguing between them, either about the directions or politics - neither of which they can agree on).

But I'm looking forward to seeing my little one year old nephew at least.

This made me laugh because my parents got back last week from a two week trip there and said it never stopped raining the entire trip. Cold and miserable. They said all the residents just walk around like it's all good though. :D I have to say when I went last June it was unbelievably gorgeous. Think I will keep my trips to the summer.

My nominations were:

Eyes Wide Shut (1st)
After Hours (2nd)
The Swimmer (3rd)
A Trip to the Moon (1st Short)
Ed Wood (4th)
Bullets Over Broadway (5th)

I still love all five of these picks. The Swimmer's placement on the 60s list is partly because of me nominating it for a HoF and bringing more awareness to it. I'm proud of that.
It might shock some people how many other cinephiles you can (indirectly) influence through this forum, just by posting about a film. I know I've been influenced many times (even subconsciously).

Definitely. Even if you look at the Countdowns there's often several films from the Hall of Fames that possibly wouldn't have been there. Doubt Ride The Pink Horse would have made the 40's Countdown if it hadn't been nominated for example. I remember every nomination in the Documentary HoF made the Countdown i believe.

definitely agree about that, one of the many great things about this place is all the amazing flicks I would easily have missed out on if I wasn't here. The HoFs, Last Film You Saw, Movie Tab, The Countdowns, and the Review Threads are goldmines to discover and get feedback about films. And, OBVIOUSLY, any number of folks who's viewing is similar to one's own.

Oh, and here's my list of HoFs
12th HoF: The Grand Budapest Hotel
13th HoF: The Three Musketeers
14th HoF: La Grande Illusion
4th Short Film: The Rink & The Three Stooges "Pop goes the Easel"
Animated Shorts: A Tale of Two Kitties & Little Rural Riding Hood
1940s HoF: The Suspect
Live Action Musical: Godspell
Musical Artist: Pink Floyd - The Wall & Amadeus (First Place)
1940s II: The Sea Wolf
1970s: What's Up, Doc? (Host)

CosmicRunaway 12-10-17 05:58 PM

I thought that I was only in a couple of HoFs, but I decided to check since everyone was posting about their participation, and apparently I've already been in 8.

11th (Good Bye, Lenin!)
12th (Barbara)
13th (Wings of Desire)
14th (M)
40s Part I (Murderers Are Among Us)
40s Part II (Beauty and the Beast)
Animation (The Last Unicorn)
4th Shorts (Flankers, Dust)

Miss Vicky 12-10-17 07:13 PM

I've participated in:

5th HOF (Quills)
6th HOF (A Perfect World)
7th HOF (Being John Malkovich)
11th HOF (Her)
12th HOF (Romper Stomper)
13th HOF (Dances With Wolves)
14th HOF (Black Snake Moan)

Then there was the ill-fated Comedy HOF (The Big Lebowski), the Animated Musicals HOF (Charlotte's Web), and the Animation HOF (Tokyo Godfathers).

So that's ten that I've signed up for.

I don't know if there is anything slotted yet, but I think the consensus idea is that those two should be the next two themed hall of fames. Maybe we should hold a vote on what comes after those two?

Re: Movie HALL of FAME Archives & Info

The Women's one would probably have to happen some time in January or early February depending on the size as the deadline for the Countdown is March 31st.

CosmicRunaway 12-11-17 03:04 PM

Re: Movie HALL of FAME Archives & Info

The 70s HoF ends sometime in mid January doesn't it? If the Directed by Women Countdown starts when that one finishes up, that should (hopefully) be enough time before the Countdown's deadline. The Foreign Language HoF can always wait since it's not time sensitive.

So, getting the Women Directors slotted for January would be ideal and then, if you're ready, @CosmicRunaway, doing the Foreign one, at your leisure, sounds wonderful to me.

Also, on a separate issue, as a number of you know; the 70s HoF is having difficulty with an issue that has plagued the Hall of Fames since forever: people starting and not finishing. It's a tricky situation since its always good to have new participants but it doesn't always work out for this particular reason. @Citizen Rules has come up within an excellent scenario with the Virgin Hall of Fame for getting new folks interested and seeing if they wish to join in and whether they are committed to the long haul of it. I commented about it in the 70's and would like to propose it here, (a little more eloquently)for more in depth discussion:

I love Citizen's idea with Virgin HoFs to try folks out and see how they do. Perhaps we could follow up on that and make it a kind of Training Ground, a sort of pre-requisite for folks new to HoFs to see how they do and if it's something they seriously enjoy and wish to join in on.
And then, the General (numbered) Hall of Fames are kept for those who have joined and finished and, perhaps, leave the Specialty HoFs up to the individual Host.

Also, this IS Citizen's baby and it's brilliant and if things weren't going as they are in the 70s HoF I wouldn't be tossing this into the conversation so abruptly and allowing, respectfully, Citizen to bring this up in his own time and fashion. So, for that, I truly do apologize - it is NOT my intention to jump in on his idea. Just posting a thought in the proper thread, is all, having already done so in the 70s.

I'll host it if no one else wants too.

Must admit feel pretty bad about the Foreign one as Cosmic has been waiting to host that for ages. I'll join it whenever it happens.

Re: Movie HALL of FAME Archives & Info

I'd say no way should anybody have to have completed a pre-requisite to join any of our games. Plus, people that would flake would still flake on those games, possibly rendering them useless because they are going to have less members anyway.

Yeah, gonna have to agree with this. Solid idea Ed but i think it's a bit too much. The host should just decide to kick people out if they have good reason to suspect they aren't going to bother to finish, like i did with that Titu member who i don't think has posted on the forum since.
