Welcome to the MovieForums Top 100 of the Aughts (the 2000s!) Countdown!
The 100% OFFICIAL bona-fide, certified list of films released in the years between 2000 and 2009, as voted for by our distinguished members.
-
88 ballots were submitted, almost all of them at full capacity (25 entries). According to the MoFo record-keepers, that's the third most ballots submitted among all the MoFo countdowns, so thanks to each and every one of you that took the time to submit a ballot. That makes this list *yours*.

637 movies were voted for, with a lot of really great ones missing the cut. Always remember that this is just a snapshot of the collective preferences of the whole of MoFo, so don't sweat it if your favorites didn't make it, but rather take the opportunity to explore the ones that you haven't seen, and share your favorites that missed it.
So as we get ready for the countdown to begin, feel free to chime in with any prediction, tidbits and reviews as we reveal each film, or any healthy discussion about it. Just DON'T share your full list until the end.
Let's Go!

Acknowledgment: Other than every voter, I want to thank all of you for putting this burden on the n00b. With only a year here, that means you either trust me or you hate me. Still not sure :D Finally, I want to thank Yoda for holding my hand so far. We're going to be here for a while, so I hope you don't mind me holding tight for a bit more.

The MoFo tradition is to honor the One Pointers. What are those? Well, those are films that received exactly one point, meaning that a single person had them in their last spot of the ballot (25th), with no votes from anyone else.
It is common for people here to use that spot to put the spotlight on a rather obscure film, a
"hidden gem", or just a bizarre nomination just for kicks. For this countdown we ended up with 38 one pointers, so brace yourself!

Here's another funny game. Try to guess who voted for what, as people claim their one pointers :D
Quick note: I plan to post the one-pointers in a minute, and start the countdown tomorrow. As usual, there are some technical mumbo-jumbo that Yoda has to complete now that the thread is live, but I expect this to be rolling tomorrow.
In the meantime, I'm gonna borrow an idea from Thursday Next, from her Foreign Film Countdown... so what are your predictions/faildictions:
What will films #100 and #99 be?
Which director will appear the most times?
How many animated films will make it?
What year from the decade will have the most entries?
Have fun!

My thought as well.
I'm interested to see how many English language vs non-English language films there are, especially considering the semi-recent foreign language countdown.

#100 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)
*I just seen that for the first time a few weeks ago and if I hadn't sent my ballot in I would've voted for it.
#99 Probably some horror flick I'd never watch:p
Director who appears the most: Spielberg, wait a minute everyone hates Spielberg, at least the hipsters do;) What's the name of that director everyone thinks is the cat's meow? Yeah that one, he'll have the most movies make the list.
One pointers are up. Check the third post.

Surf's Up got four votes in the Animation Countdown and sneaked onto the list at #99 (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1213264#post1213264) back in 2014, but it gets very little love around here.
I watch this movie at least once a year and it's one of my go-to picks to cure sadness or boredom. I love the characters and the concept and it's just so light-hearted and fun. I highly recommend it.

Spider Man 3? Blade 2? Jason x? National Treasure?

Well then….Lust, Caution was my 1 pointer, and I wasn’t sure if it would have been. It’s an erotic spy thriller, directed by Ange Lee.

No one pointer for me, but I will say Bucket List was on my final 38 I considered and in reality it is probably in my 25, but I left it off cause I figured it wouldn't get the votes and I was right, so kudos to whoever voted for it.
National Treasure is great fun and kudos to whoever did that too.

An American Crime (2007)
Anger Management (2003)
The Bucket List (2007)
My Dinner with Jimi (2003)
Surf's Up (2007)
I can't stand Adam Sandler so Anger Management is not my cup of tea. An American Crime and The Bucket List are pretty good. I know I watched My Dinner with Jimi for the Hall of Fame, but don't remember what I thought of it offhand. And, of course, I love Surf's Up.

I've seen 12 of the one pointers, although mine didn't make the list. Bon Cop Bad Cop is my favourite of the one pointers I have seen. Great film. Atonement is excellent too. Jason X is a lot of fun.

Wow Wet Hot American Summer is a one-pointer. I was expecting it to make the list. I loved the hell outta it but only saw it once and it was a while ago so it didn’t make my list either obviously.

Seen these. I would say that Atonement, Salton Sea, and Brand Upon the Brain are great.
I've seen all. Five. One-pointers. Pretty sure I just won the game.
I've seen 35/38. The only ones I haven't are Bon Cop Bad Cop, Funky Forest: The First Contact and Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical. My #25 didn't make the one-pointers.

As for the ones that made it, I've seen 8. Whoever voted for Kung Pow deserves all my praise. I wouldn't have had any problems putting it on my list. It still stands as one of the most hilarious theater-going experiences I've ever had.

Ah, the one-pointer. Always one of the finer gambles on this site because you're effectively competing blindly with everyone else to be the one person to vote a particular film onto the list. After some deliberation, I chose Don Hertzfeldt's Rejected - it definitely feels like someone else had the same bright idea as I did (pretty sure that happened when I tried the same thing with It's Such A Beautiful Day on the all-timer list). Be that as it may, it's not hard to see why it deserves to get singled out in this particular manner as its absurd little parody of educational cartoons crystallises a particular brand of turn-of-the-millennium humour so well that I guess I shouldn't be surprised other people would vote for it. Maybe I should have gone with Miami Vice after all.

I've seen a handful of the one-pointers: Anger Management, A Bittersweet Life, Blade II, Bon Cop Bad Cop, Harry Brown, Jason X, National Treasure, Spider-man 3, and Wet Hot American Summer.
I watched some of Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner a few years back, but not the entire thing. I know it's an important film, but I just wasn't into it at the time. I've seen parts of Kung Pow as well, but I'm unsure if I managed to sit through the entire thing as it was a long time ago haha.
My one-pointer was Bon Cop, Bad Cop. The best way I can describe it is as a "distinctly Canadian" film. It's half in English, half in French, centres around hockey-related crimes, and contains an awful lot of satire that probably doesn't work if you're not Canadian. It's not an amazing film, but it's a fun buddy cop comedy that I quite enjoy thanks to the two leads.

I've seen a mere twelve of the one-pointers: All Or Nothing; Anger Management; Atonement; A Bittersweet Life; Blade II; The Bucket List; Harry Brown; Lust, Caution; National Treasure; Surf's Up; The Pool and This Is England.
Of those both A Bittersweet Life and Lust, Caution were in contention for a spot on my ballot but didn't quite make it and The Pool was my own one-pointer.

Ok, reveal will be in a few minutes.
Just to give a bit of a prologue, kinda similar to what happened on the Foreign Film Countdown, the movies at #101 and #100 were tied on points, and although the ballot count serves as our tie-breaker, it's fair to let you all know which one was #101.

Still yet to see Still Walking but I usually quite like Koreeda's works so hopefully will get round to it at some point. 65 points as a barometer doesn't fare well for a lot of films on my list.
Haven't seen any of the 3.
I briefly considered Master and Commander for my ballot, but ultimately, ended up pulling it. When I was finalizing my ballot, I was trying to ensure I was including films I liked from all genres, as well as animation etc. Master and Commander ended up getting cut so I could include an animated film. Anyway, great stuff, I love the score, and the tense scenes of nautical battle as we travel along with the crew aboard their little wooden world.
My one-pointer was 49 Up. I had a few reasons for choosing it: it's representative of a fascinating--if flawed in design and ethically dubious--documentary that it's hard to imagine being replicated in a social media age. It's not the best of the series, exactly (if I had to pick one I'd choose 28 Up), but it is good in and of itself, and they're really all of a piece. And, for another month at least, I'm 49 myself, so this particular episode is particularly meaningful for me right now.

And these are three good movies to start out the countdown. It's going to be a good one!
Still Walking is a quietly-powerful family drama, but not one of my faves from him. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a solid 3.5 movie. I liked the characters and the action, plus I was impressed that we got to see the Galapagos Islands. The New World - 3 - breathtaking visually, but the two halves of the story (the two Johns) don't seem to fit together. Overall a very good start.

First, let me say that the banners are GORGEOUS!
I saw parts of Master and Commander in high school, but it wasn't my thing at the time. But now that I know it's a Peter Weir movie I might actually check it out today. So far the only Weir movies I've seen are Truman Show and The Last Wave, both of them among my favorite movies.
I'm not currently in tune with anything by Terrence Malick, but I'll get around to him once I'm done exploring the director's I'm already familiar with. I was planning on exploring more Peter Weir, anyway.
Never heard of Still Walking.
And one more thing... the fact that Kung Pow only got one point is disappointing. Stinky pits and all, baby.

I haven't seen Still Walking and Master and Commander, but I have seen The New World and it was was #25 on my ballot. It's shot really well, it contains Malick's sensually pleasing poetic style, and, more importantly, it seems as if the characters are aware of their fates before it even happens to them, yet are resigned to them. The ending, in particular, ranks amongst the most powerful things Malick has ever done. One could criticize this film for its length and, while I struggled with it somewhat with my first viewing, it grew on me quite a bit when I revisited it.

Actually, up until I looked it up just now, I didn't even know it was a Napoleonic war film. If I had known that, I probably would've checked it out around the time I watched Abel Gance's Napoleon and finished the novel War and Peace.

Messes with the layout.
Also kinda dissonant: it's supposed to be a banner draped over the post, but there's nothing in that place to drape it over.

I don't think Master and Commander was in range of landing in my top 25. It's one I might watch once in five years, but there's just not much of a draw there with me.

I hadn't heard of Still Walking until this, and I really haven't seen any of Kore-eda's work.
I saw Master and Commander for the first time just two years ago and, although I thought it was pretty good, I never really considered it.
As for The New World, I've never felt drawn to it. I've been approaching Malick's film with a bit of caution, but I suppose I'll get to it eventually.

Decent start to the list. I'd say Still Walking is my favourite of the bunch - watched it twice earlier this year and a movie's usually got to be pretty good for me to watch it more than once in a calendar year. Master and Commander and The New World are both solid enough in my estimation, even if I do think they're more good than great (though who knows how much that'd change if I gave them another shot).
oh ffs. i screwed up my list. I JUST remembered a movie that I can't believe I forgot. I may not participate from here on as I sulk into a dark cave of depression.

Wow already on the first day of the countdown and 2 of the first 3 movies made my ballot:)
Still Walking was my #3! it made my ballot and the countdown thanks to TN aka Thursday Next who recommended it to me in my 2000s Recommendation thread.
Master and Commander was my #4! This was the first movie I thought of when this countdown was announced. I'm pretty sure it also wouldn't have made the countdown without my help.

I briefly considered Master and Commander for my ballot, but ultimately, ended up pulling it. When I was finalizing my ballot, I was trying to ensure I was including films I liked from all genres, as well as animation etc. Master and Commander ended up getting cut so I could include an animated film. Anyway, great stuff, I love the score, and the tense scenes of nautical battle as we travel along with the crew aboard their little wooden world.I seem to recall this was one of the movies that we watched when I visited, but correct me if I'm wrong.
But I seem to recall me geeking out at the quality of the audio mix, so I am pretty certain we watched it. It was either that or Kingdom of Heaven.
Man, I don't even know anymore. We watched quite a few things: I do remember watching The Goonies when you were at work and also we watched True Lies and The Last of the Mohicans.
Good times, man. :)

Some info about our #100, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World...
https://i.imgur.com/sounzOm.png
It currently has a 85% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score among critics, if you're the kind of guy that checks that. Remember that the Tomatometer is not a direct measure of quality, but rather a metric of how many critics gave it a positive review, which could've ranged from "Wow! It was magnificent! Best of the year!" to merely "twas Ok".
Meanwhile, the film has a 7.4/10 score on IMDb (with 213,000 votes).
Anyway, Roger Ebert gave it ★★★★ and called it:
"Grand and glorious, and touching in its attention to its characters. Like the work of David Lean, it achieves the epic without losing sight of the human, and to see it is to be reminded of the way great action movies can rouse and exhilarate us, can affirm life instead of simply dramatizing its destruction."
On the other hand, Kam Williams of Town Topics said:
"While Master and Commander recaptures the bygone days of the ultimate in intimate male-bonding opportunities, it fails to develop any meaningful relationships among its characters. Thus, this is a mindless war movie with dialogue saturated with words such as sextant, leftenant and bosun's mate, and punctuated with Anglophilic appeals like 'For England! For home and the prize!' and 'This ship is England!'."
As for our MoFo reviewers, Citizen Rules said:
"What a great film!... It's the characters and how they interact and show us life abroad ship that makes this film very special. Yes it does have some thrilling moments, many in fact. Yes there's plenty of action and good old ship broadsides with roaring canon blast and shards of ship boards a-flying. But this film has something more, heart and that makes it much better than the average sailing ship movie."
While Hondo333 said:
"I have walked out of the cinema disappointed... Not that I had expected a lot from Master and Commander, but I had at least expected a decent film, which was not delivered... I think that there was a (failed) attempt to transfer what was happening on the screen to affect the viewer."
Remember that although I might or might not share this thoughts for some of the films, you can always click the poster on each entry, which will take you to each film's special page within MoFo, with lots of neat information about it, and links to the reviews of fellow MoFo's.

I've never liked the weird percentage system for Rottentomatoes. That's why imdb even though it can be unreliable sometimes, the rating tends to be more honest there.

And now, some info about our #99, The New World...
https://i.imgur.com/AQ4mItt.png
It currently has a 63% Fresh Tomatometer score among critics.
Meanwhile, the film has a 6.7/10 score on IMDb (with 85,000 votes).
Roger Ebert ALSO gave this ★★★★ and called it:
"Terrence Malick's "The New World" strips away all the fancy and lore from the story of Pocahontas and her tribe and the English settlers at Jamestown, and imagines how new and strange these people must have seemed to one another."
On the other hand, Josh Larsen gave it ★★ and said:
"The tale may be perfectly suited to Malick’s languorous cinematography and portentous voice-over narration, but by now these elements have begun to resemble a misguided perfume commercial. Call it Terrence Malick’s Obsession."
As for our MoFo reviewers, Holden Pike said:
"The larger and more constant Malick themes of the natural world and how man is both juxtaposed and in harmony with it are on full display in The New World. Malick is a cinematic poet, which is really the key point of audience division. If you go into Terry's films expecting traditional narrative you will likely be frustrated, confused and bored by the images, no matter how beautiful. But if you open yourself up to his unique brand of storytelling, these are momentously engaging and emotionally moving films."
While ashdoc said:
"I only wished that the tides of history could have been turned, and that every meeting that the natives had with the white man would have been like the experience of Pocahontas, and that sheer poetry like the film could have been weaved out of that meet... Verdict---Good."
I seriously doubt I will do this for all of the 100 entries  but for now, I'll ride the high

I have no strong feelings one way or the other towards the Tomatometer, but I do with the wrong way that many interpret its score. I hope MoFo's here can look at it as its intended. Anyway, I had also intended to include the IMDb score, but forgot. Will edit now. Thanks for reminding me!

Also, re: The Last of the Mohicans - I replaced my Director's Cut copy with the original cut, as we discussed! I definitely prefer the original cut.Aye, the minor differences really do make for a completely different film. The stuff omitted in the Director's Cut was kinda important, so that's why I found it odd at the time.
They even have a "Definitive Directors Edition" now, which put some of that stuff back but it doesn't seem to have the cohesiveness of the theatrical cut. All I know is it'll always be a top ten for me because of that whole Deleuze/Guattari bull****. :D
I haven't seen Still Walking, but I'm sure I'd like it better than the other two, both of which I found unimpressive, though they are nice looking films. I'm glad to get them out of the way right at the start. I didn't try for a 1-pointer for this list, because when I tried for a 1-pointer for the foreign language film it was OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, which someone else also voted for, so I didn't bother for this list. Now I see there's a third OSS 117 movie that came out this year. Too bad the second one wasn't very good.

As no one attempted managed to guess my one-pointer correctly, I'll have to reveal it myself. I suppose my fancy towards vigilante films has come up earlier, so it should not be a major surprise that my one-pointer is Harry Brown. I've only seen it once but I did like it a lot.
I haven't seen Still Walking (actually, I haven't even heard of it before). I've seen two of Kore-eda's films and liked the other (The Third Murder) and disliked the other (After Life). This one seems like it would belong to that dislike portion for me, unfortunately.
I've seen Master and Commander when it was released, and remember it is OK. It's one of those films I'm planning to rewatch at some point and probably should have done so prior to this countdown.
I'm pretty sure I've seen The New World too, but my memories are pretty vague. Back then I didn't know what to expect from Malick, so I've probably been disappointed. I've found most of his films decent lately, so maybe a rewatch is due in here as well.

Haven't seen Master and Commander or The New World. I do have the former among my VUDU films so maybe I'll get around to it in 2022?
As for the one pointers, I'm kind of surprised Atonement just had the one vote. It's not bad. Anger Management might be among Adam Sandler's last decent movies (haven't seen Uncut Gems or the Meyerowitz Stories), Still I would have rather seen Sandler enter into Jack's world (that film would have probably been a career highlight). Blade 2 might have been my first and only taste with a dollar theater (they were phasing out the old cinemaplex with a bigger one so they decided to go cut rate on its way out the door). You can tell some of the Del Toro quirks were present, but the film was only alright. The Bucket List was a decent concept with some good actors in search of a good script (they didn't find it). Jason X was a highlight of the Friday the 13th franchise and did have some choice moments such as Jason in the VR world and any scene featuring Chuck Campbell and Lisa Ryder. National Treasure was a fun one riding the charisma of Nicolas Cage and a crazy plot. Remember the Titans would be an honorable mention for me. Great acting from Will Patton and Denzel Washington and a compelling story allows this one to march towards the end zone. I couldn't vibe with World's Greatest Dad (that sequence in the pool is a bit on the nose) but Robin Williams does give a good performance as a father desperate to reshape the family story.

As one can surmise from my quoted review I do like Malick's The New World an awful lot, though it did not make my ballot. It would have been in my top thirty-five or forty but not twenty-five. Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World is nowhere on my top one hundred. I love Peter Weir, especially the middle phase of his career from Gallipoli through The Truman Show, but this intentionally old-fashioned epic doesn't do anything for me.
And away we go.

One pointers : Mine was the Bobcat Goldthwait film World's Greatest Dad (2009) - I thought it would make the list as not too many people have seen it (you really should!)
I've seen 12 out of those others. Harry Brown is the best - a really good film that almost made my list. Watched Spiderman 3 in preparation for this countdown. This is England is really good. Atonement is brilliant - nearly made my list as well and I'm surprised it only got the single point. All or Nothing is a good one from Mike Leigh. Anger Management is one of the better films with Adam Sandler in (Punch-Drunk Love will surely rate here) and I watched The Fog of War for the first time in preparation for this countdown also - so that's paying off! Jason X I've seen along with every other Friday film. It's actually one of my favourites from that series. Remember the Titans got a run in my preparation too. It had me cheering. National Treasure I saw a little while ago for the first time. Saw The Bucket List a long time ago - very popular when it came out.
100. Master and Commander : The Far Side of the World - Watched this for the second time in preparation for this a few weeks ago. Visually impressive, with wonderful battle scenes, but I'd like to have seen more drama and character from the human representatives in this. I don't mind looking at it though. I could watch it again just for the cinematography. It captures the wonder of life at sea in that optic sense along with the splintered timber or roaring explosions during more hectic scenes. I'd hate to be wounded in that day in age...
99. The New World - I'm quite happy to see this on the list. I rate The New World very highly, even though I didn't vote for it. Contains the same lyrical sense that most of Terrence Malick's stuff does - and suits the former film on this countdown as a pair with it's visuals, which are sublime. Maybe I should have voted for it - I loved it dearly the first time I saw it. On a second viewing I did feel a bit like it was a little uneven, but if I were rating it this would still get a 9/10 from me.

It's been many years since I watched Surf's Up, but I remember liking it. I probably should have rewatched it for this countdown, but it wasn't likely to make my list anyway. There are other animated movies that I know I like more than it that I couldn't find room for on my list.

I bet Beyond the Sea was gbgoodies #25 movie. Good movie and I almost included it on my list.
Good guess.
Beyond the Sea was my 1-pointer. It wasn't strategically placed there. It just happened to end up there when I ranked my list. In addition to the movie having some great songs, I thought Kevin Spacey was great as Bobby Darin.

Remember the Titans as a one pointer is a shame. Real good.

I watched Still Walking for the Foreign Language Movies Countdown, and even though it didn't make my final Top 25 list, I liked it enough to consider it for my list for that countdown.
I tried watching Master and Commander several times for this countdown, but I just couldn't seem to get into it, and I eventually just gave up. :(
I haven't seen The New World.

Surf's Up was pretty good, but I only watched it to hear James Eoods' sleazy delivery. I watch bad movies pretty often, but Iwill easily watch the worst of the worst if James Woods is merely talking.
Just finished Master. Slow first act, good second and third, needs more character development but the action's Emmerichian in it's atmosphere.

Great start, it's looking good, props to Thief and yoda for putting this together.
From the one-pointers I've seen, I really like:
A Bittersweet Life
Remember the Titans
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist
Surf's Up
National Treasure
This Is England
Most of them are on my 00's list somewhere between 70 and 110. Remember The Titans was on my ballot at one time but didn't make my ballot this time.
First time I saw The New World I fell asleep, it took a re-watch for me to fully appreciate it, had it at #21 initially but after some ballot rearranging I replaced it with;
* * * * * * * * * * 2006.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World was my #10.

I've seen both of those, but they weren'T on my list.
I have practically no memory of master and commander, I must have seen it 6 or 7 years ago. So I don't have much to say about it.
I remember liking The New World a lot when I saw it a couple years ago, I might have considered it for my list if I rewatched it recently. I have a strong memory of Colin Farrell's acting which is very raw. I'd like to rewatch this film!
The Salton Sea was my one pointer. I remember being very pleasantly surprised when I saw it, expecting something aggressively mediocre.

It's a great family film, and it's one of those movies that works great as noise in the background at family gatherings. Anything to keep everyone from murdering each other, amirite?
I almost picked Sahara, but I ultimately thought that National Treasure was a better throw away vote.

Technically, I haven't seen either.
I remember I started watching Life Aquatic years ago on cable, and was enjoying it, but had to stop watching for some reason. Maybe I had to leave somewhere or whatever, but I never got back into it. Go figure.
I haven't seen Werckmeister but everything I've heard/read about it is good stuff.
I'm afraid Wes Anderson lost me somewhere around The Royal Tenenbaums. Everything he does just feels a bit too precious. But that seems to be a me problem more than anything else.

Fantastic Mr. Fox particularly bugged me because it felt like a betrayal of Dahl's novel, shaving away the darker edges and replacing them with Anderson's own self-conscious quirkiness. A lot of people like that, clearly, but it's not for me. I've seen Life Aquatic and Moonrise Kingdom also, and was less bothered by them but not really enthused either.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is not in my top Anderson films but it's OK. Werckmeister Harmonies is certainly Tarr's best and most-poetic film but it didn't quite make my list.

A 'double doughnut day' for me as I've seen neither. I have generally enjoyed what I've seen from Wes Anderson but for some reason The Life Aquatic has never appealed much to me. Not seen any Bela Tarr at all as yet, Werckmeister would most likely be the starting point for me if I do get round to him though.

No votes. I've been meaning to do a full Wes Anderson rewatch in order to confirm my feelings about all of his films (a good chunk of which I've only seen once), but if I had to rank them right now Life Aquatic would be near the top. Meanwhile, I have yet to see a single Tarr film but from what I understand Werckmeister is a good place to start.

Some info about #98 (or 99?), The Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou...
https://i.imgur.com/3UhSP6B.png
It currently has a 56% Rotten Tomatometer score among critics, BUT an 82% Fresh Tomatometer score among the audience.
Meanwhile, the film has a 7.3/10 score on IMDb (with 189,581 votes).
Anyway, Roger Ebert gave it ★★½ and said:
"My rational mind informs me that this movie doesn't work. Yet I hear a subversive whisper: Since it does so many other things, does it have to work, too? Can't it just exist? 'Terminal whimsy', I called it on the TV show. Yes, but isn't that better than half-hearted whimsy, or no whimsy at all? Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is the damnedest film. I can't recommend it, but I would not for one second discourage you from seeing it."
While Peter Bradshaw, of the Guardian, gave it ★★★ out of 5 and said:
"This is one of the most thoroughly and elaborately designed movies I have ever seen - even more so than Anderson's last film... If only it were a bit funnier. It is such a brilliant idea, and everything looks so great, especially the way the film is constructed on Coustea-esque lines, with the calm deliberation of a nature documentary from a more innocent age."
As for our MoFo reviewers, Gideon58 said:
"This film is deliciously unpredictable with surprises throughout and Anderson has spared no expense in bringing this complex tale to the screen. The film features some beautiful cinematography, both underwater and above the surface, first rate art direction and set direction (the Belafonte is awesome), and terrific film and sound editing. But above all, this is a triumph for the director, co-screenwriter Noah Baumbach, and its one-of-a-kind star who confirms here he is a genuine movie star."
While kkl10 said:
"Sweetly awkward, silly fun, bittersweet; potentially pointless and dull-witted for insane minds. This is one of his most eccentric and colorful works. There's no way to dislike The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou for those who enjoy the cinema of Wes Anderson. Although all his movies follow the same basic formula, each one leaves me with a unique impression. I enjoyed this movie as much as any other work from Wes, recommended!"

And some info about #97, Werckmeister Harmonies...
https://i.imgur.com/LRexIFQ.png
It currently has a 98% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score among critics.
Meanwhile, the film has a 8.1/10 score on IMDb (with 13,710 votes).
Roger Ebert gave it ★★★★ and said:
"Bela Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies is maddening if you are not in sympathy with it, mesmerizing if you are. If you have not walked out after 20 or 30 minutes, you will thereafter not be able to move from your seat. 'Dreamlike', Jim Jarmusch calls it. Nightmarish as well; doom-laded, filled with silence and sadness, with the crawly feeling that evil is penetrating its somber little town."
While Philip French, of the Guardian, said:
"The central thrust of this pessimistic fable is obvious, though individual sequences are frequently puzzling. It's shot in static or very slow-moving long-takes; the monochrome images are deliberately oppressive; the pace would strike the organisers of a state funeral as excessively slow."
As for our MoFo reviewers, ScarletLion said:
"Long scenes, long takes, little dialogue and bizarre in parts, but extraordinarily beautiful... My first ever Tarr movie. And it's probably in my top 100 movies of all time."
While BlueLion said:
"Werckmeister Harmonies is enigmatic, mysterious, and one hell of an experience. The film looks minimal and feels natural despite the ambiguity surrounding it, and its black and white photography combined with the film's mood and use of location help to give the work a sense of timelessness: it doesn't matter where, why, or when the film is taking place, it is a work which is universal in its themes, and which could be seen as a metaphor for life itself."

I had The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou as my #12 film. It's my favorite Wes Anderson film. Maybe not by a ton, but definitively.
I really just have two things I want to say about it:
First, I saw it with my friend Adam. Adam and I are very different people. We're friends because we've known each other since we were 10. We are very much the kind of friends whose friendship is based on history and the firm belief that we'll always be there to help the other out, even though we have wildly different tastes in most things. We saw this film together (I have no idea why), and we both loved it. That felt, and still feels, very significant to me.
Second...
The climactic scene with the Jaguar Shark is wonderous and moving in a way I can't explain. It seems particularly strange that it would be so affecting given how simplistic and low-tech the effects are, and how it's viewed on this tiny little screen-within-a-screen, but it is breathtaking. My best guess for making rational sense of this emotional reaction is that it's all in the anticipation, and the tonally perfect choice in music. Whatever it is, I adore it.
The more I think back on Anderson's other films, the more it stands out as not just exceptional in terms of quality, but exceptional in that I can't think of many other moments of emotional climax he chooses to punctuate like this.
You know what, it's nearly Xmas so Imma gunna accept this and leave your Host Rating unchanged for now. If it happens again though..... ;)

This. Same watchlist for me, with just those two films, and I didn't finish Pearl Harbor. Oddly, I thought 13 Hours was pretty entertaining, but that is a different decade.

It seems that I'm a bit late here...
To start with the one pointers, none of these is mine. I've seen only three of them, back in the years - Anger Management (2003), Frida (2002) and Swimming Pool (2003). Surely, the latest one deserves much more in this party, just the names of Charlotte Rampling and Charles Dance are enough to make the movie a must for a top 100 list of a decade. Unfortunately, I couldn't give it some points in the very short ballot of 25-titles.

Good ole Michael Bay. I remember when I thought The Rock was peak cinema. Now I can't watch that movie without getting nauseous because of all those freaking camera cuts. Just pick an angle and stick with it for God's sake.

I don't see why people hate on the first Transformers. Obviously, the sequels prove that these movies can be so much worse. I think the problem is (based on reviews and comments) that the whole franchise ends up being a one-trick pony.
Besides, Pearl Harbor's action war scenes are phenomenal.

I still enjoy it, mostly because of Ed Harris, but Bay has a tendency to direct every scene as if it was a climatic showdown. It gets tedious after a while.

I agree about PH's war scenes, but 30 minutes of great action doesn't overcome 2 hours of awful acting and cringy dialogue.
As for Transformers, I've never seen any of the sequels so I don't have that context, but I seriously think the first one is one of the worst films I've ever seen; and I say this as someone who was a huge fan of the 80's cartoon and the 80's animated film.

Nah, as you can see Yoda increased the prices whilst you were unwell recently ;)
Anyway, to get this thread back on track Michael has 5 eligible fillums for this countdown:
Pearl Harbor
Bad Boys II
The Island
Transformers
Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen
I haven’t seen any of those. Judging by the other responses I guess I should consider myself fortunate.

I liked Swimming Pool a lot, but it just totally slipped my mind as I compiled my list. Not sure it would have made it, but it was a fine film...

Compare Bumblebee to the first Transformers - like night and day!

As someone that's only seen Pearl Harbor and at least some of the first Transformers of those myself I'd say that's a perfectly fair assessment.

I like Bad Boys, but that's mostly due to the humor and the chemistry between the leads. The directing itself is actually pretty bad, way too over-the-top and distracting at times. Bay should've focused more on making it on a comedy than going for an action epic.
Armageddon is the only movie I've seen so far where his style works since while it does have its fair share of (endearing) cheesiness and comedy the stakes are also big enough that his crazy directing fits in seamlessly. As a matter of fact it's actually fairly pulled back by Bay standards.

That I've heard. I plan to check that out one of these days. Then again, it's not Bay's ;):p

98. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Wes Anderson is one of the top filmmakers of our time. Stepping in his fifties, he has a real chance to overtake names like Scorsese in the all time rank list. With a talent like this, I can see him very close to Woody Allen in the art of cinema hall of fame.
As for the The Life Aquatic, it is a bit too eccentric and experimental to be a serious contender for the top slots but I'm glad it made top 100 anyway. I would give it some points if I had a ballot of 50.
97. Werckeister Harmonies
I heard and watched this movie for the first time about six months ago. I'm double minded about it but I'm surprised it isn't in the top half of the list knowing how popular it is among the film enthusiast.
100. Master and Commander
I remember when they've launched this in the movie theaters. Then, it was in our watch list for a while but finally we've skipped it. That's all.
Never heard before Still Walking and The New World.
I love The Life Aquatic even though I sort of agree with Roger Ebert that it's "the damndest film." Besides the excess of "hipster whimsy" that is one explanation for why Anderson has so many haters, it's not totally clear what we're supposed to get out of the movie besides the enjoyment of a quirky sea adventure. I enjoyed it as a story about a man who would fit right in on The Wizard of Oz in that he already has what he's questing for: respect, redemption, validation, etc., and his refusal to kill the shark is Steve not only realizing this, but also him realizing that he'd do the very thing he's completely against: harming the beauty and wonder of the ocean.

life aquatic is bottom-tier wes but still a solid picture. haven't seen any of the others but they're all movies that i've always imagined i would love but have been putting off for one reason or another.

I'm in the middle of a Brett Piper film right now. Transformers does NOT have "cringy" acting.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I liked Werckmeister Harmonies, but it was a unique and positive viewing experience.
I would like to see The Life Aquatic at some point.

Thief- you are doing a spectacular job on this list- thank you for all your hard work. love the critics feature you're doing, I will definitely be trying to check in daily. I think 80-100 is always the best part of these lists as anything can come.
Anyways I've only seen Werckmeister Harmonies and I rated it 2 at the time, however it's been so long I can't tell you why, I remember not feeling much of anything during the film
Bellamy was my 1 pointer, and my #19 on the foreign list, it's been a long time since I've seen it but it's a really pleasent film that plays out as a puzzle
My List:
25.Bellamy (1 Pointer)
