The store (ShopRite) was probably worse supply-wise today than it's been since the start of the outbreak!
In some areas, but not in all: bread was back, but there was a surprising lack of produce this time - garlic was sold out (people have obviously heard my theories). ;)
Any packaged goods on sale were gone (sales on Stove-Top-Stuffing, salad dressing, ice cream, and Craker Barrel cheese left these shelves stripped!)
The cheaper tonic water was sold out (obviously people have caught on to the idea of the quinine in tonic).
Paper products sold out (now they had Marcal Toilet Paper by the single roll, but I didn't get any because there was no price - only $9.99 - for what? The giant cardboard box they were in? For a single roll? No info whatsoever on how much an individual roll cost on the price label, so didn't waste my time trying to find out.)
Hand Sanitizers, wipes, disenfectants, bleach, alcohol = still none.
Refrigerated juices = sold out completely.
I saw one worker taking photos of the empty shelves with his phone and telling a customer his mom was never going to believe this.
We've found some stuff at our local ShopRite, but not as much as we've found at Stop and Shop. You should check the prices on the items that you need. I don't know about NJ, but here in NY, ShopRite has NOT been price gouging at all.
On a sad note, the owner of five ShopRite stores in New Jersey died from coronavirus today.

Brother-in-law finally got his results and tested positive for Covid-19. A twelve-day turnaround after the swabs were taken is ridiculous, especially considering both he, his wife and two of their children are officially regarded as essential workers. Thankfully he's made a full recovery and I can see now why my doc told me it wasn't worth him ordering a test for me (with me not being essential I'd likely either have been cured or dead by the time I'd waited not only about a week to take it but also then for the results).

I do all the shopping at my house, and every weekend I go to Stop & Shop, Market Basket, Shaws, Walmart, Target, BJs, and Ocean State Job Lot. I told my wife I need to cut down on stores right now because I feel like that's where I'm most likely to get the virus. I go early so I already have to wait for the grey hairs to leave, so I've cut out Market Basket since they have a line waiting to get in. I also stop on Thursday while working to get her damn black bread and more bananas. Yesterday she wanted me to stop just for bananas in case she wanted to have a second banana today for the first time in 2 years. I put my foot down and said no, and I got them today along with those paper products. Now she just texts me to get suets. Are you friggin kidding me? I just got her a 50lb bag of bird food, and all she does with the suets is crumble them up anyway. Any other time and I give in, but I'm not risking sickness for suets. The birds will be fine with just seed until the weekend. And I'm trying to do my work.

Yeah, we all have to be thinking about minimizing both those trips and the number of things we have shipped to us. My plan for awhile was to make a weekly grocery trip, but after seeing the spike recently I decided to just ration the stuff I couldn't order and put in one big delivery order for the rest (which took longer now, but still got through), with an eye towards not going outside for anything but yard work and quick dog walks for the next two weeks.

There might be one more thing adding to the confusion.
Despite common belief, the term casualties actually includes wounded/injured/etc. It's only recently through common usage that "deaths only" has been tentatively added as a mention. (Funny note: I've actually won bets in gettogthers over this....gets me a free dessert. So easy now that everyone has a phone.)
Seems to have taken a while though, because nearly everyone I know had it wrong, so you'd think it would end up as maybe the top definition. American Heritage (far superior to m-w and that crap Wiktionary) was studying this.
If you don't believe me see this link. The write-up at the end is interesting:
https://ahdictionary.com/word/search.html?q=casualty
Okay, since people didn't stop (and never should've started), I'm just nuking the whole discussion.
Would be perfectly happy to discuss the general nature of theories and conspiracies, though, in another thread.

Half a million! Whatta hell?! Trump indeed made 'murica great again!
Slight counterbalance to the stuff about "peaking":
https://twitter.com/IronEconomist/status/1248032542223106050
It's still more good news than bad, but a lot of death still comes after/during a peak, unfortunately. It just means we might have worried the worst-case scenarios from the initial wave. Worth keeping in mind.
Half a million! Whatta hell?! Trump indeed made 'murica great again!
Well, there are like 350 million people here. The raw number comparisons in some cases are a little silly (not that this refers to you). Should be per capita, I think.

Grocery pickup (ordering online) has been my plan all week. Got an order in just after midnight on Monday night, for pickup on Wednesday. But on Wednesday morning I got a text, then an email saying my order had been completely canceled because of "unusually high demand." Trouble was, you had to choose a specific time slot (which is why I ordered just after midnight--when they roll over to the next day's available slots), so why did they cancel my order? I had a time slot.
Last night then I tried to do it again, got to the website about 12:30 a.m.... and all the slots for the next four days were GONE. Delivery and pickup.
So I gave up and today went out to our local smaller grocery store, complete with mask. I hadn't been there in about 9 days. Nine days ago nothing much was different, except they had an extra antibacterial wipes stand at the front doorway and signs at the checkout asking people to stand back a little bit..
Today? Nine days later? Signs everywhere about staying "two carts apart" from everyone in the store. And plexiglass between the cashiers and the customers. All the workers were wearing masks. Most were also wearing latex gloves. And a sign in several spots asking people to wear masks while inside the store, if at all possible. They weren't policing that yet, but I'd say a good 80% of us were wearing masks.
I'd say, though, that the masks are giving some people a false sense of security because too many were just breezing right by me or heading right toward me without regard to that "two carts apart" bit.
Oh, and there was some toilet paper today so I grabbed three individual rolls. Score! They were, though, dreadfully OUT of Spaghetti-Os. Whatever shall I do for my comfort food fix now that the one can I was holding for a stressful day is gone?

90-year-old survivor of COVID-19 tells others to ‘keep on fighting’
Anna Fortunato, a 90-year-old survivor of COVID-19, has a message for the rest of us:
Do not be afraid. Do not despair.

OMG.
Spaghetti-Os freak me out. The first time I ever had them was maybe a few months after my parents got divorced. I was with him for the weekend, I guess. He had a new girlfriend that he had shacked up with part time. Anyway. He takes me there one afternoon. Looking back, I'm sure he was there to do adult things. She heated a can of spaghetti-Os and gave me and her two daughters a plastic bowl of it, each, then she and my dad disappeared into another room in the apartment.
So. Yeah. I have this weird mix of nervous anxiety, grief, guilt, and cheating dad skank-on-the-side vibes that come over me just seeing a bowl of it. UGH. Some time later he picks me up for the weekend for a camping trip. Halfway to Lake Eufaula he tells me we're meeting her there to stay in her dad's camper. Man. Huh. I just realized that might be why I hate beaches so much?! WOW MOFO is therapy!!!

I have a friend (may have mentioned him already lol) that started texting me last night bragging about how he was "right" and that the projections were never correct to begin with, and that it's only people that can still work that don't have a problem with state shutdowns and stay-at-home rules. It blows my mind how anyone can conflate trying to be proactive and at least respecting statistical models with wanting people out of work and broke. It blows my mind that people continually compare 12-month numbers of one pandemic to numbers of what, maybe a quarter of that time with this one (and still overtaking those 12-month numbers, if I'm reading CDC correctly)? It blows my mind that people are so caught up with "winning" that they turn needless human death into a competition as if it were a political bowl game. wtf is wrong with people?

I liked Spaghetti-Os when I was a kid... although I never understood the Chef Boyardee (or similar) products.
As a lover of Italian sauces and pasta these canned goods never made sense - tomato sauce is red, yet the sauce used in these canned items is always ORANGE!
Why is it orange?
It never tastes like authentic italian food either. It dosen't taste bad, but it never tastes like an Italian pasta in tomato sauce.
And don't get me started about the "meatballs" (if these are "meat" I don't want to know what animal they're from)! ;)

We bought that same Stop and Shop toilet paper recently, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that it's a good quality product. We had a similar story here on Long Island:
'There is hope.' - 93-year-old Navy veteran from Baldwin beats COVID-19 (http://longisland.news12.com/story/41988503/there-is-hope-93yearold-navy-veteran-from-baldwin-beats-covid19)
Bob Saylor, of Baldwin, who turns 94 years old next month, was diagnosed with pneumonia from COVID-19 three weeks ago. The Navy veteran had a high fever and a cough, each tell-tale signs of the virus.
With a doctor on call and the medication needed, his family says it was a frightening week – but they were able to nurse their father back to health.
“There is nothing stronger than family and love,” he told News 12. “You can't get one without the other. There is nothing stronger than that.”
Saylor's daughters say their father is a man of few words and would rarely speak about his time serving in the Navy as a diver. He was tasked with recovering bodies following the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The father of eight with 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren instead focused his life on his family and his faith, which is what they believe pulled him through.
“Take care of each other and love each other. There is hope,” he said.

Looking like the New York trend is for real. That's probably the initial peak. A lot of other places across the country presumably have something similar coming up (perhaps not as bad, with more time to prepare/distance and less insane population density and travel hub-ness than NY has), but the expectation that we'll be through the worst of the first wave by late April is looking solid.

That's actually really refreshing to hear. You might be a dwindling breed. Here's AH's take on this:Usage Note: In military usage, a casualty is a serviceperson who has been killed, injured, captured, or in some other way rendered unable to serve. When used in nonmilitary situations, such as newspaper reports about accidents, the word casualty is usually used to mean a person who is either killed or injured. Sometimes, however, people use casualties to refer only to individuals who have died, not to those who have been injured. This usage is often considered an error. In our 2013 survey, 60 percent of the Usage Panel disapproved of a sentence where casualties was used to mean "fatalities" only: Officials have reported 21 casualties from yesterday's earthquake. In addition to those fatalities, 79 people were seriously injured.
So you seem to be part of the 60%. Perhaps it's a North American thing, because nearly everyone I mention this to is half-astonished.
I remember NPR pointing out how definitions were critical during the Iraq war (back when I listened to them). They didn't mention casualty specifically, but did bring up "wounded". They pointed out that the massive number included commonalities like sprained ankles and sprained thumbs, both of which disable the combatant.
THEN they followed it up with a report about "missing limbs" and a huge number of wounded given without qualification. Oy!
While that wasn't specific to the word casualties, it certainly put me always on the lookout for definition collisions. They really sway opinion, and right now, swaying opinion better not be taken lightly.

Annoucement made over the ShopRite loudspeaker today (...if you're wondering why I'm there so much it's because I shop for various elderly people who can't or don't want to go out...) it said that you MUST now wear an "appropriate" face mask while inside the store.
It said this was in accordance with the NJ Governor's announcement about masks made on a certain date (I don't know when exactly that was or exactly what the message was... obviously it had something to do with wearing masks!) ;)
All the employees have been supplied masks, but I still saw a few customers with no masks, but the majority were now wearing masks including bandanas and scarves.

My roommate who only applied earlier this week got his yesterday.
My other roommate applied for EI back in the middle of March when her store closed due to the pandemic, and was automatically transferred to CERB and got her money yesterday as well.
I wasn't able to apply for EI until last week (since Indigo was paying employees for so long despite store closures), and thought I had to wait until I got a code in the mail. When I learned that wasn't the case, I applied yesterday.
Hopefully you don't have to wait too long. Did you at least get the extra boost to your GST cheque?

[B]They didn't mention casualty specifically, but did bring up "wounded". They pointed out that the massive number included commonalities like sprained ankles and sprained thumbs, both of which disable the combatant.
Another common error is to confuse “injured” and “wounded.” A combatant with a sprained ankle might not necessarily have been wounded. He may have drunk too much & fell out of bed, which would make it an injury.

That's rough. I didn't know you wouldn't get the GST/HST rebates if you owed money on your tax return, since I've never made enough money to have to pay in.
Did you pay that $400 yet? Maybe that's delaying your CERB application from being processed? Or maybe the system's a little overwhelmed and my roommates were just lucky to be in the first batch of payouts.

I had to go to a couple of stores yesterday, talk about crowded! I guess it was because it was a Friday and before a holiday, and it was warm & sunny. Perhaps people had also gotten tired of sheltering in place and decided to go out shopping.
I went to Lowes and the damn line went down the front of the store and disappeared around the corner. To hell with that I thought, so I drove over to Home Depot which is just across the street and the same thing. No way were these people in line standing 6 feet apart, more like 3 or 4 feet at best.
I can't believe that is limiting the spread of coronavirus, not when you're forced to stand in a crowded line for an hour and almost no one had face coverings. I go to Lowes and Home Depot on a regular basis and I've never seen the store really crowded. I bet if a scientific study could be done about the effectiveness of limiting people into stores BUT making them stand in line for long periods, we might find that the lines cause more coronavirus transmissions than if people were allowed in the stores in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they have little Xs to stand on when going through check out, keeping people 6 feet apart, but outside they were pretty damn close together.

No line to get into Walmart or Stop and Shop, but I did have to wait in line for the bank inside Stop and Shop. Probably 75% of the people were wearing masks at all 3 stores, but I felt like I was the only one adhering to the one way aisles. Got everything I was looking for except butter spray and blueberry figs.

More evidence coming in that the initial wave as peaked. At first I worried that we all (meaning other states) had our own ramp-up after New York in store, and that might still be, but it's also possible by being a bit "behind" them we were able to act in time and might avoid anything like that.
My state, Pennsylvania, has a stay-at-home order through the end of the month, but I'm increasingly optimistic things can and will be loosened up in early May.

This may be a simplistic question, but why don't the Hindus and Christians in Pakistan move to India? It's obvious they cannot be treated fairly under an Islamic system and will ultimately be targets for terrorism (as is true in Muslim-dominant countries in the Mid-East as well). This was said today by the President and I find it downright scary, if this action was actually taken to it's climax, we could be talking about major civil conflict in the U.S. and a loss of democracy.
President Donald Trump declared he has “total” authority to order states to relax social distancing to combat the coronavirus outbreak and reopen their economies, and warned that governors who refuse would face political consequences.
Asked what provision gives the president the power to open or close state economies, Trump said: “Numerous provisions. We’ll give you a legal brief if you want.”
“The authority of the president of the United States having to do with the subject we’re talking about is total,” Trump said at a White House news conference on Monday. “I have the ultimate authority”...
Legal experts and some governors disputed Trump’s claim. The 10th Amendment to the Constitution reserves for states all powers that aren’t specifically granted to the federal government.

Different states have different variables, so I would leave it up to the Governors (that would also be the politically smart thing for Trump to do as his hands would be "clean" either way - responsibility for success or failure would fall upon the Governors).
Also... what is Trump going to lift? Haven't all state orders been issued by the states themselves anyway? (And aren't there a few states that have even chosen not to issue "stay at home" orders?)
As far as I know (and I may have missed something as I've not been following it too closely) no federal decree was made or national official "order" given (such as "martial law") was it?
And even the state orders seem more like guidelines that are vague and filled with so many exemptions it's hard to even regard them as "orders." So what exactly does Trump think he's going to do if nothing on the federal level has officially been issued?
I definitely feel like I missed something.
He's wrong, he doesn't have the authority. It's not even arguable. He just straight up doesn't.

Let's keep the discussion limited to coronavirus after I have answered this ok .
Yeah indian PM modi is making a law which allows Christian Hindu Buddhist refugees to come to India from Pakistan Bangladesh and Afghanistan-- the three Muslim countries in the region. Any non Muslim from these three countries will be allowed to settle in India citing religious persecution. The law is being opposed by Indian muslims because they are not allowed to settle in India from these countries. That's why we had Delhi riots just before coronavirus. Do they have any logic ? Why should muslims settle in India from Muslim majority countries? They are majority in those countries after all :o

I wont derail this thread, I will keep this short.
Several do. Every year Hindus, Sikhs and Christians come here in thousands. Quite a few get citizenship eventually. This is due to the open discrimination in Pakistan. Large portion of it is kidnapping and raping of Hindu, Sikh and Christian girls. As young as 11. And Pakistan's law supports that.
Recently a 11 year old Christian girl was kidnapped, raped and married off to an older Muslim man. Court ruled her marriage valid, because she had her first period.
So, anyways, you might have seen a tsunami of articles in NYT, WaPo, etc. against an anti-Muslim law in India.
In reality, it was a law that allowed persecuted non-Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan quicker citizenship in India. It was humanitarian law, similar to the Lautenberg Agreement which helped Jews in USA. And most importantly, our new law DIDN'T STOP Muslims from seeking citizenship either. And yet, there was a huge outcry against it. Simply because persecuted Non-Muslims were given a preference.
Anyways, there is a Pakistani journalist named Naila Inayat who regularly highlights cases of persecution or abduction of minor non-Muslim girls in Pakistan.
This latest bit of discrimination, non-Muslims not been given food, is also true.

COVID-19 claims lives of 30 grocery store workers, thousands more may have it, union says
(https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2020/04/14/coronavirus-claims-lives-30-grocery-store-workers-union-says/2987754001/)
Grocery store workers are on the frontlines of the spreading coronavirus epidemic, and thousands have died or taken off work because they've been exposed to the respiratory illness in the U.S., according to a new report. Ever since this pandemic started I thought it was crazy that grocery workers who come in contact with 100s of people each day, weren't wearing mask or gloves. It's like all these business are closed down and everyone funnels into the grocery stores to stockpile food...And that makes a perfect breeding ground for the virus.
Then there's this news article today:
South Dakota’s governor resisted ordering people to stay home. Now it has one of the nation’s largest coronavirus hot spots. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/south-dakotas-governor-resisted-ordering-people-to-stay-home-now-it-has-one-of-the-nations-largest-coronavirus-hot-spots/2020/04/13/5cff90fe-7daf-11ea-a3ee-13e1ae0a3571_story.html)
...South Dakota’s top elected leader stood firm: There would be no statewide order to stay home. Such edicts to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus (https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/02/28/what-you-need-know-about-coronavirus/?tid=lk_inline_manual_3&itid=lk_inline_manual_3), Gov. Kristi L. Noem said disparagingly, reflected a “herd mentality.”
It was up to individuals — not government — to decide whether “to exercise their right to work, to worship and to play. Or to even stay at home.”
And besides, the first-term Republican told reporters at a briefing this month, “South Dakota is not New York City.”
If we could just keep the BS politics out of decisions regarding coronavirus and apply logic instead of dogma, we might get through this pandemic easier. It's really maddening to see the stupidity and outright obstinacy that has occurred at all levels of decision making.

Move to Roanoke when you feel like a change. You can get an affordable house with a sizable piece of land, and amazing weather to boot.
I have not plowed snow in the last 3-4 winters, and the only real weather related issues we have are flooding. But as long as you don't buy a house near the river or a creek then you're all good.
We have a 2600 Sq ft house - 4 bedrooms and a pool. We are in the middle of a refi and should close in May. Our new mortgage will be about $950 a month. While Hindus didn't celebrate big festivals like Holi, Ramnavmi, and Christians didn't celebrate Easter, and Sikhs didn't celebrate Baisakhi in this country... I am already reading dreading reports on Ramzan. Come 23rd of April and things are gonna go downhill.

The mortgage on the house we live in (which is, admittedly, a starter home that we bought in a very poor neighborhood) was just a few hundred a month.
That’s not you & Courtney in the photo is it?
Same here. I got so tired of paying a relatively small sum each month I eventually paid off the mortgage with a single check.
All I know is I'm crazy about that sunken living room.
Love sunken rooms.
Be careful when you check your mail. That carrier goes by hundreds of homes and germs. Part of me wants to just say hell with it, especially after getting sick again... My biggest problem is worrying about getting medication. Withdrawals include death!
Hearing this more & more about the mail. I’ve just been grabbing it from the mailbox, but, still ....
Why are you worried about meds? Actually getting to the pharmacy to pick them up or what?

Here's a statistic I'd like to know about (if anyone has any info, please post...)
How many people who received the flu shot last year have died of Covid19?
How many who received the flu shot have become infected with Covid19?
How many who received the flu shot became infected and recovered from Covid19?
Don't know if there's any correlation or if a regular flu shot could provide any degree of protection, but we wouldn't be able to know unless the statistics were compiled and looked at.

Also, I had full blown flu last year (just about 1 year ago) after going to the hospital to stay with my mother while she was there. Exactly 3 days later I felt the fever coming on (it felt exactly like the last time I had the flu 30 years ago - I've never had a flu vaccine). I had chills, extreme body aches, 104 temperature for 4 days - was on my back for that time, loss of appetite, later vomitted (probably from too much muchus and medicine), got diaharrea, and had a severe cough & lung pain that eventually made it hurt just to breath. Took a good 2 weeks to recover mostly and 2 months to recover completely.
A few days into my flu, my mom developed a severe cough (without the fever, etc.) - but she had gotten a flu shot so I'm thinking maybe that prevented her from getting full blown flu. It seems we both picked it up in the hospital - or I picked it up and she got it from me.
I'm just wondering if having such a severe flu last year had me make antibodies that might protect me from Covid19? It seems I have a 30 year resistance to flu after having it severely (at least judging by the last 2 times).

Covid19 causes flu like symptoms but it isn’t the flu. It’s a completely different type of virus so the flu vaccine or natural immunity to certain strains of flu aren’t going to protect you from this novel Coronavirus.

To add to what you said, there are already two known mutations or strains now. One from China and the other from Middle East. Most of our Covid-19 patients in India are of the Middle East strain - primarily from Iran.
Now add densely populated regions like India and Brazil to this mix. God knows what new strains we will have - or are already present.

I just got the CERB payment I applied for late last week. If you still don't have yours, definitely call Service Canada (or the CRA if you applied through them instead).
A new eligibility window just opened, and apparently we have to keep applying every month. So maybe once you apply for April it'll get processed more quickly?

I've been following the numbers for my county (https://doitgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/6c83d8b0a564467a829bfa875e7437d8) (156 confirmed cases - out of 2,169 tested - and 2 deaths since the outbreak, 24 cases in my city). But there's one little bit of information on their site that really bugs me: the "age group" stats. They're broken up between 0-18 years, 19-64 years, and 65 and over. I get that the first group are "children," the third group are seniors, and the rest are "adults" but the range in that second grouping is so huge that the number is completely useless.
We've got masks to wear at work now but I feel like my coworkers are not taking this situation seriously enough. The masks are uncomfortable so neither of my coworkers that I worked with yesterday were wearing them, despite being within close proximity (2-3 feet) to some of our clients. I kept telling them to put their masks on but it was no use. It's absolutely maddening.

I'm more tired of people who don't understand how important it is to practice social distancing, and wear a facemask and gloves while out in public.
Hubby and I went to the Stop and Shop supermarket in East Meadow, and we immediately noticed that they were the only store in the area that had no line outside. (Most stores have lines that go across the front of the store and around the side of the building.)
When we got inside, we realized it was because they had no security outside the store to stop people from going in the store. We had to leave because the store was so crowded that it was impossible to stay at least 6 feet away from people. And many people weren't even wearing any kind of facemask, which is required now in our area.
The store will probably get thousands of dollars in fines because they're just ignoring all the rules that have been set up here.

Man Who Bought $10,000 Worth of Toilet Paper and Hand Sanitizer Denied Refund
https://www.newsweek.com/man-who-bought-10000-worth-toilet-paper-hand-sanitizer-denied-refund-1498343?utm_source=spotim&utm_medium=spotim_recirculation
A man in Australia who purchased around $10,000 worth of toilet paper and hand sanitizer was recently denied a refund by a supermarket owner.
John-Paul Drake, director of Drakes Supermarkets in Australia, recently posted a video to YouTube and appeared on a radio show to talk about the situation and why he denied the customer's refund request.
"I had my first customer yesterday who said he wanted to get a refund on 150 packets of 32-pack toilet paper and 150 units of one-liter [hand] sanitizer. I told him that," Drake said as he showed his middle finger to the camera.
While appearing on ABC Radio Adelaide in Australia, Drake explained that the man reached out requesting a refund after he was unable to sell the products on his eBay account.
"In the conversation [the shopper said] 'my eBay site has been shut down, so we couldn't profiteer off that'," Drake told the radio station saying that the sum of the products equated to around $10,000.
The situation comes amid a time when many people across the globe have participated in panic buying, with many believing that they need to stock up on products like toilet paper and hand sanitizer, mainly as a result of the novel coronavirus, which has kept people isolated and quarantined.
Following the influx of panic buying and stockpiling on different items, a number of supermarkets, including Drakes, have placed a ban on the number of items per customer, but according to Drake, this specific customer was able to find a way around the limits.
"The person had a team of people that bought the products, because you're only allowed to buy one of each at a time," Drake told 3AW Radio in Australia. "So, you do your sums at 150 separate purchases to buy these. Absolutely disgraceful."
"The rest of my team [is] over this sort of behavior and having to police people taking more than they need – that's a tough thing to deal with," Drake added while appearing on ABC Radio.

That's an interesting story. Who has 10 grand to spend on toilet paper? The guy must have a lot of money to spend that much on bathroom products so I don't feel bad for him. Unless he spent all he had and is just greedy and stupid (so, again, I don't feel bad for him).
Plus, what's he complaining about? He's sitting pretty. He'll never have to buy TP again!
It's a consumable that never really goes bad (as long as it's kept sealed, dry and out of direct sunlight) and it's something people always need. He can share it with his neighbors - the ones who can't find any TP in the supermarket because people like him hoarded it all! He can give it to friends and relatives as birthday and holiday gifts.
Or he could donate some of it to shelters, the homeless, families that are struggling.

Still can't get through to anyone, but I think I know what the issue is.
Since I applied for paternity leave back in June, my wife and I agreed to do the extended 18 months and split the time. I was off for four months, returning back to work in October. My wife is still currently on maternity leave.
When I lost my job, it was before the CERB thing was implemented, so I applied for EI again with the impression that everyone who applied after March 15th would automatically go over to CERB April 6th.
I applied on the 27th and waited....finally got something in April and it was not the CERB. It was $495. I was perplexed as to why it wasn't the $2,000. I'm almost 100% positive, that the system put me BACK on PATERNITY leave because the benefit is technically still open with my wife.
So I'm eating away at her time off now and possibly might not be eligible for CERB because of this.
Been trying and trying to call, but coming up empty.

Oktoberfest.de - The Official Website for the Oktoberfest in Munich
Oktoberfest 2020 has been cancelled
The Wiesn 2020 cannot take place because of Covid-19
"It is the biggest and most beautiful beer festival in the world", said Bavaria's Minister-President Markus Söder. But the Oktoberfest will have to be cancelled in 2020 due to the Corona Pandemic. Söder announced this today, April 21, 2020, in a joint press conference with Munich's Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter. The background, statements of Wiesn boss Clemens Baumgärtner and all further information.
“The risks are simply too high“: Oktoberfest 2020 had to be cancelled
"It hurts, it's such a pity," said Minister President Söder in the Bavarian State Chancellery – together with Munich's Lord Mayor Reiter. However: "We have agreed that the risk is simply too high."
The Oktoberfest 2020 should actually take place from September 19 to October 4. About six million visitors from all over the world were expected. In times of Covid-19, however, the danger of infection in the mostly crowded beer tents and the many people in the streets and alleys on the Theresienwiese would be too high.
"We have experienced that the après-ski in Ischgl, various beer festivals for example, or even carnival events were unfortunately virus hubs," said Söder. This is why the greatest sensitivity applies to public festivals. "As long as there is no vaccine, as long as there is no medicine, special care must be taken."

"L.A. County Antibody Tests Suggest the Fatality Rate for COVID-19 Is Much Lower Than People Feared"
Interesting stuff. A test was done in L.A. County California of people who are not suspected of ever having Covid-19. The volunteers were tested for antibodies which would suggest that they had indeed previously been infected and not known it.
Based on a representative sample of 863 adults tested...the public health department, found that "approximately 4.1% of the county's adult population has antibody to the virus." Taking into account the statistical margin of error, the results indicate that "2.8% to 5.6% of the county's adult population has antibody to the virus—which translates to approximately 221,000 to 442,000 adults in the county who have had the infection." That is 28 to 55 times higher than the tally of confirmed cases at the time of the study.
As of noon today, Los Angeles County had reported 617 deaths out of 13,816 confirmed cases, which implies a fatality rate of 4.5 percent. Based on that death toll, the new study suggests the true fatality rate among everyone infected by the virus is somewhere between 0.1 percent and 0.3 percent (without taking into account people infected since the study was conducted). The lower end of that range is about the same as the estimated fatality rate for the seasonal flu.
HOWEVER these are very preliminary results and those antibodies could be false positives. Remember 80,000 died of flu in the U.S. in 2018 but so far in under 3 months over 45,000 have died from Covid-19. And that's with preventive measures. So while the antibody test results are interesting, they are inclusive until more antibody testing can be done.

Covid-19 in two pet cats
Washington, D.C. April 22, 2020 – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) today announced the first confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) infection in two pet cats. These are the first pets in the United States to test positive for SARS-CoV-2.
The cats live in two separate areas of New York state. Both had mild respiratory illness and are expected to make a full recovery. SARS-CoV-2 infections have been reported in very few animals worldwide, mostly in those that had close contact with a person with COVID-19.

E.R. doctor on 'front lines' of coronavirus fight in N.Y. dies by suicide
A New York City emergency room doctor who was on the “front lines” of the fight against the coronavirus has died by suicide, police said Monday.
Dr. Lorna Breen, 49, who worked at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, was in Virginia when she died on Sunday, said Tyler Hawn, a spokesman for the Charlottesville Police Department.

It is sad. A few weeks ago a nurse had committed suicide. There doesn't seem to be an end to this virus in sight.
Kinda of disgusted about all the nursing home deaths. I think it is downright wrong for these deaths not to be highlighted. and counted properly. Do these people not matter? According to a couple different articles I have read over 11,000 deaths have occurred in nursing homes, mainly spreading because of under staffing. We can send hospital ships and build field hospitals but cant help staff the nursing homes? I am sure there can be blame thrown at the operations of these facilities as well, but don't these places get inspected regularly?
Anyway I just had to vent a little after seeing a soldiers home have so many deaths reported suddenly. These are citizens that sacrificed so much for this country only to be forgotten when it comes to reporting and proper care. I know the death rate is high among the elderly, but more precaution should have been taken to prevent the spread and should be addressed. I am afraid the numbers are going to be even more horrible once the light is put on this particular part of the crisis.

Quite nerve-racking to shop at Stop and Shop today. Not the first time I’ve been since this all started, but the first time we in CT cannot enter without a mask. Rather a somber mood there. Employees I am friendly with told me it’s hard working there now. Dealing with rude hostile people who don’t want to wait in line & many other problems. They looked exhausted. Only thing they didn’t have which I needed was wipes. They did have some fancy ones for $16, but I put them back.
Then I took my first bus trip home. Two stops, but nerve-racking also. One old bat freaked out because she said I was too close to her. Won’t need to go there again for quite a while. So long as my cats have plenty of food I am happy.

NIH clinical trial shows Remdesivir accelerates recovery from advanced COVID-19
Hospitalized patients with advanced COVID-19 and lung involvement who received remdesivir recovered faster than similar patients who received placebo, according to a preliminary data analysis from a randomized, controlled trial involving 1063 patients, which began on February 21. The trial (known as the Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial, or ACTT), sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, is the first clinical trial launched in the United States to evaluate an experimental treatment for COVID-19.

So... why is the Left now in love with Remdesivir while they went completely nuts over Hydroxychloroquine (calling it "deadly" and saying Trump had "blood on his hands!")?
(Like all drugs, both have potential adverse side-effects and contraindications. When used in the wrong patients with existing ailments both can cause heart problems or organ failures. Remdesivir can actually bring about respiratory failure in some Covid19 patients just as Hydroxychloroquine has shown to be relatively ineffective in patients in advanced stages of the virus.)
Oh... because Trump mentioned the one first - that the Left went nuts over - and not the other.

The reason is spelled out in this headline: Experimental coronavirus drug Remdesivir expected to get emergency FDA approval (key word: expected FDA approval).
With Hydroxychloroquine Trump touted it as a magic cure without much empirical data to back that up. Much like his suggestion of using UV light inside the body and using aerosol disinfectants to clean out infected lungs. In other words he was grabbing at straws. So it has nothing to do with politics, but does have to do with sound medical testing.

I did get that part. However, both drugs when used on certain patients (those with certain underlying conditions or in late stages of Covid19) pose similar risks - one is no "deadlier" than the other depending on who and how they're used - yet that was the headline used to accuse Trump of having blood on his hands simply for mentioning it and the various reports of doctors having success with it and patients attributing their recoveries to it.
Meanwhile, the same news outlets that equated Trump's championing of Hydro-c to murder are now singing praises to Remdesivir as a potential miracle treatment (as to the latter, I hope they're right!)
I don't know this for a fact, but it seems that Hydro-c might have gotten similar approval but for politics (I mean, why wouldn't it as it's an established drug that's been prescribed for Lupus and Rhumetoid Arthritis since 1953 with a reputation for being "safe" as far as drugs go?) - and as it has had a tremendous success rate in treating Covid19 patients in early & middle stages and serving as a prophylactic for the advancement of the virus as reported by many doctors who prescribed it.
I'm not saying I know which drugs work and which ones don't (maybe they are all duds!) - or which ones are safe or not (no drugs are "safe," but are determined to be worth the risks by doctors). I'm just saying, based on the news coverage, there's been a lot of politics involved in the reporting on these two drugs which seem to have both similar risks and rewards in treating SOME cases of Covid19, where one side is determining their condemnation and bad press simply on their hatred for Trump.
I’m pretty sure it’s being determined based on the markedly different results they saw when tested under sound methodology.

I've been as careful and respectful of Corona as anyone, but I'm starting to think maybe it's all been a massive overreaction. Massachusetts has been one of the hardest hit states, but the average age of death has been 82, about 5 years higher than the average life expectancy. The majority of people who are not elderly had preexisting conditions. Their has been a tiny amount of deaths among the apparently young and healthy. Small amounts of apparently young and healthy people do get sick and die without corona. Any death is tragic but that's not the point. With all the millions of people that have it or have had it, and don't know it, the fatality rate is going to be much lower than we can ever figure out. Hospitals are over reporting corona deaths to get funding as well. Many who have died were not expected to survive another year regardless of corona. The true survival rate is probably going to turn out to be over 99% including the elderly and those with preexisting conditions. Take them out and it's probably 99.9%. There will be thousands of deaths due to the pandemic and economic impact involving people who are not dying because of corona. If the country were completely opened up, but special attention was given to the at risk people, would there be more or less death? Trump was mocked early on for calling it a flu, and he probably shouldn't be given medical opinions, but he could potentially be wrong going the other way. Millions of people get the flu shot every year yet thousands die. We can't truly compare the two until there is a vaccine for corona. When all is said and done a few years from now, the flu could be worse than corona.
I've heard the "preexisting conditions" argument, but the problem is that term encompasses a lot of very common things that most people don't even think of as conditions, like high blood pressure.
I don't think there's going to be any chance the flu is worse, though: we've lost as many to this in a few weeks as we do to the flu in a year, and that's with the massive nationwide shutdown.
Regardless, as I've noted from the beginning, the problem is the same problem inherent to all counterfactuals: if we shut down, and it works...wouldn't it look like an overreaction? That's the nature of the situation: if you did enough, it should look like you did too much.

I don't know how many people the flu kills on average each year, but if we get a vaccine for corona, and then it still kills more people each year, then we can say it is worse than the flu. Only time will tell.

I basically consider myself at risk because I am a smoker. Sort of like a self-made pre-existing condition. If I get corona and it doesn't turn out well, I would blame the smoking more.
Following up on my earlier reply (I was on a tablet and it was late), it's actually because a trial showed it was ineffective (https://www.contagionlive.com/news/chloroquine-hydroxychloroquine-ineffective-covid-19).
I don't know how many people the flu kills on average each year, but if we get a vaccine for corona, and then it still kills more people each year, then we can say it is worse than the flu. Only time will tell.
I think that's a separate question, since tons of people are exposed to the flu each year without getting it. Not so with this: nobody has immunity (at least coming into all this), and it's much more contagious.
There's just lots of manifest ways in which it's clearly worse. Again, the fact that it killed as many in a few weeks as the flu normally kills in a year, WITH everyone staying inside and going to all this trouble, is a huge deal.
I basically consider myself at risk because I am a smoker. Sort of like a self-made pre-existing condition. If I get corona and it doesn't turn out well, I would blame the smoking more.
Yeah, that's fair. There's a lot of stuff like that that people don't mentally register as a condition. They think of conditions as really really serious stuff, but the fact is your average American isn't super healthy to begin with, so an awful lot of people who think of themselves as in reasonably good health have some of those risks.
cricket
05-01-20, 11:26 AM
I wouldn't argue your points Yoda because you could be right. But what if the flu was brand new this year with no vaccine? We don't really know, and we have no idea how many millions of people have or have had corona that are unreported.
Oh, you mean worse in some kind of thought experiment, where we just wipe out everyone's antibodies and start from scratch? Yeah, I dunno. That's mostly an academic question, I guess. From what I've read it's just straight-up more contagious, though, and the effect it has on the respiratory system (and on people with clotting issues) is more dangerous than most strains of the flu, but some of these answers might be different if we suddenly didn't have all the immunity we already have. Not having immunity for this is definitely a huge part of the threat.
cricket
05-01-20, 11:36 AM
Yup and I guess there's different answers depending on how you look at it. I'm just wondering if we needed to shut down the country or if we could have just done more to protect the vulnerable. Of course we didn't know then, but maybe it's the best thing to do now.

Me and the wife were among the first to take notice of the Coronavirus back when the news was focused on the Princess cruise ship that had it. We were also among the first to wear face mask & gloves while shopping. I have believed this would be a very serious thing since the start....HOWEVER in the last week or so I've also started thinking we've overacted in some areas of prevention, while not doing enough in other areas.
I posted a couple of news links here that no one commented on: there was widespread Covid-19 antibody testing done in L.A county, Ca. and in New York of apparently healthy people who hadn't had Covid-19. They were tested for antibodies to see if they had ever had Covid-19 in the past. This test then provide data on how wide spread Covid-19 was in the population. Both antibody test showed that Covid-19 was MUCH more widespread than original thought...AND...the death rate was far, far lower in these two test ares. The death rate was calculated at only .5% That's 10 times lower than the original estimate of 4 or 5%. And .5% is about the same death rate as the seasonal flu.
However, Covid-19 does seem to spread MUCH faster than the flu so the overall death rate would be much higher than the flu if preventive measures weren't taken.
One thing that's not been mentioned on this thread: researchers have discovered up to 30 different strains of Covid-19. It seems it easily mutates once it's in the human population. While the original strain in China was deadly. Many of these other strains are no more deadlier than the seasonal flu.
With all that said, I think the focus should be put on individual prevention for those at risk and most business could be opened back up.
I think we need to adjust our preventive measures to reflect the fact that Covid-19 death rate isn't nearly as high per individual than we had originally thought.
The really telling thing are the first-hand accounts from nurses and doctors in places like New York. That's the stuff that can't be faked, can't be hype. The flu doesn't overwhelm their system like that, so either the contagiousness, the lack of preexisting immunities, or both, or something else, makes this unique.

Going back to work on Monday. Might be sporadic, mixed in with working from home, but I think the time is right. It's a small team, none of us have had any symptoms (or know anyone who has), and we've all been very very careful, so we're going to give it a go.
I would wipe everything down when you return, including your phone. Whether anyone has or has not physically been in your office. You don’t know who randomly has been in there.
I’m debating whether to return to my rectory voluntary work a little later this month. It’s only 3 hours twice a month, but I got badly spooked in late April by the thought of the germs there that I have taken a break since. We were sharing a phone, the mailman doesn’t wear a mask or gloves, etc. I had no clue who used my little “desk” if I wasn’t there, etc. I was terrified I would give it to my husband.
Just heard on the news, 30 million Americans unemployed.
Frightening. When we resume our church food pantry - maybe the 1st week of June if the Archbishop says so - we are going to have many unemployed people registering with us.
You should be able to spray people with water like a cat when they do it.
Oi! Who sprays a cat!! :)

Exactly. Unfortunately, it’s not fake.

New York is like that but most places aren't. Massachusetts is I believe the hardest hit behind NY and NJ, but there's plenty of beds available. Gov. Baker today made masks mandatory in public throughout the state. We are going to see many more deaths later from things like cancer because people aren't going in to get checked. The reverberating effects of the virus are going to be worse than the virus itself.
Perhaps most places aren't because they saw New York first? As I mentioned, it's pretty hard to provide a meaningful counterfactual here. "We reacted correctly and kept the threat minimal" would look the same as "We overreacted to the threat." The stuff we can see, in the places that didn't have other locations to warn them (like in Europe), would seem to suggest it's more the former than the latter, though. All the places where it didn't crash the system they either took *huge* distancing measures very early, or took significant ones with a lot more lead time than Spain/Italy/New York. The places that did neither overwhelmed their health care systems.

Guys, how do you rate President Trump's management of the crisis?

All the measures taken certainly don't hurt, but do we really know how much it has helped? Part of me thinks that everybody has either had it, has it, or is going to get it one way or another at some point.

⬆️ Horrendous. Just like his Presidency. That’s all I’m gonna say.

Who really knows? As he will tell anybody who will listen, closing China seems like it was an important step. From my point of view though it was an obvious one. I think anybody in that position would do some good and make some mistakes when you are learning as you go. Plus much of the power is in the hands of the governors. I would be more interested in how somebody is doing that is doing something different than everybody else, like whoever is running Sweden

I don't blame Trump for being slow to respond. These are very tough situations and it's hard to tell a false alarm from a once-in-a-generation threat. The question is what they do when the situation is clearer, and unfortunately, even after we knew it was serious, he kept tossing out bizarre speculation, downplaying the threat, and then brazenly pretending he knew it was a problem all along, even though we've got him on tape saying otherwise just weeks earlier. He's also still saying things about the availability of testing that are just straight-up wrong, and often contradicted moments later by one of the doctors at the briefing. It's amazing to watch.
Hard to say how much tangible effect that has all had, but I tend to think transparency and the accurate dissemination of information are the two biggest things a leader can contribute to a situation like this, and he's been poor on both.
I'm not sure anyone's said it's fake, though that's not really how that kind of thing works. What normally happens is people just sort of vaguely downplay it or provide leading anecdotes or numbers and heavily imply it's no big deal without actually tying themselves to the position.

I don't even care what he says because we all know he's going to say some nonsense. I'm more concerned what he does. But it's even tricky with what he says, because political lies are like sports lies, sometimes it's a necessity. He has been in an awkward position where he wants people to take it seriously, yet he doesn't want to cause widespread panic. Still there's no doubt, if you're looking for somebody to say the right things, he's the wrong guy for that job.

And as far as any of it being fake, it's definitely not and it's definitely horrible. I'm just wondering if it could be less horrible if handled differently.
