Yes! All About my Mother, didn't make my list but an absolutely devastating drama from Almodovar. In this case the black humor only makes it more painful to watch. And yes these are positives. Still haven't seen Donnie Brasco but it's popular here, so shocked it didn't show up later.

Yes! All About My Mother was nine on my list. That puts me up to four with The Sweet Hereafter, Rushmore and Farewell My Concubine.

Donnie Brasco is O.K., but I'm not wild about it.

I don't think I've ever even heard of All About My Mother. I've seen Donnie Brasco once or twice a long time ago and have only a vague recollection of it. I do, however, recall being underwhelmed by it.

So far I've seen only 15/30 films and voted for 1 of them.

Donnie Brasco

Great flick that doesn't get talked about as much as it should. Great performances from all involved, the only downside is that the film is a tad too long. A bit of trimming in the editing department would have made this a classic gangster flick worth of mention beside Goodfellas....but.....you know.....fugetaboutit.

72. Donnie Brasco 3.5

A film that was very close to making my list, Donnie Brasco is a very intelligent and enjoyable crime film. I know there has been a lot said about it recently on here already, so my thoughts are probably just echoing what has already been said, the main strength of the film for me has to lie in the relationship between the characters of Johnny Depp and Al Pacino. I am a big fan of Depp and in particular his 90s work (I am hoping a couple more films of his show up) and Al Pacino, is well... Al Pacino, often criticised for his overracting I found this role to me the opposite, he is more subdued and subtle in his performance, he is a criminal but someone that Depp's character develops a real human bond with, making for some fantastic and very touching scenes near the films end.

Older people would have watched more 1990's movies.

You surely have watched a ton of films, still I am surprised that I have watched all the films in your top 10. That maybe means that there aren't that many obscure masterpieces after all or I would have expected to have watched only one of two of the films in your top 10.

I was 10 in 1999 and I began following the films from 1999 ownwards. The year with I have most films rated at critiker is 2006, with 78 films. I have watched far more films from 2000-2010 than from the 1990's, about 800 in the former case and 300 in the latter.

There are many obscure, great films out there - even masterpieces. At least I think so. Those are just my favourite films, although that top 10 should be changed a bit.

Guaporense
07-26-13, 02:14 PM
Usually the masterpieces tend to show up among the group of people that follow a certain niche. For instance, most Hollywood masterpieces are well known by the people who watch Hollywood films. I noticed that my favorite Hollywood films are very well known box office champions, such as Star Wars, 2001, Apocalypse Now, The Godfather, etc.

Hidden masterpieces tend to be found in other countries but that's because I didn't follow the films produced in these countries but are still the mainstream among the films in these niches. For instance, the best animated films are Miyazaki's who is also the most famous director working in the medium.

Another from my list with Donnie Brasco. I had it at #20.

As everyone who loves it has said, it's the two central performances, the chemistry between Pacino and Depp and the writing which really sell this film. If that doesn't really grab you, then I can understand not really 'getting' the love for it.

Awesome, Before Sunrise was 5th on my list. Really pleased that it made it. I just watched Before Midnight the other day, actually, so I was reflecting on the three films a bit. Before Sunrise does a great job of capturing that youthful feeling of forming a connection with someone new. It has an emotional honesty that's fun to watch and it's not afraid to show the flaws and immaturity of its characters (which really develop into something even more complex and powerful in Before Sunset and Before Midnight). Definitely one I want to re-watch soon.

I just saw All About My Mother the other night, so Im first commenting on that one.
It's very colorful and very well directed, so visually it is already very beautiful to look at.
The story is about acceptance, about freedom of mind and about the fact that even the 'marginalized' and more eccentric people of this society, are not so much different than the rest of us. Almodovar depicts his characters as very human and the lesson they practically all learn in this, is that it doesn't really matter if society doesn't approve of a certain part of your personal history, because, above all, truth, honesty and open mindedness are much bigger virtues than condemnation. If you think about it, it's very much about the message that Jezus sent throughout his whole lifetime. I'm not a very religious person, but I think that part of Christ certainly has its value (with many other parts). Almodovar gives it his own touch.
Next to that, it's also a tribute to some of the great actresses of the past (especially Bette Davis) and the emotions that theater/film can evoke, when there is a certain truth to it.

Before Sunrise is also a very good film about two young people who meet eachother on a train and decide to 'live' the fantasy many people have, when they meet someone they really like on a train, that they will probably never see again after that. Their walk through the night of Vienna is truthful, romantic and interesting and that's why this simple love story has so many fans. I didn't vote for it myself, but I'm very glad it made this list.
I still have to see Before Midnight. I'll probably watch it this week.

Before Sunrise wasn't that bad if I remember it correctly, I have distorted recollections of films I watched when I was younger.

Basically, I can remember seeing the original "The Thing" when I was five, and for years I thought it was a kids' film because I didn't understand what I was watching at the time. I just thought, yeah, this might be done by Disney because I watched Toy Story 2 last friday, this friday its "The Thing".

Umm... Are you kidding? Before Sunrise and La Haine? This is about as 90's as it gets.

Two brilliant films, neither of which I voted for mainly because I've not seen either of them for a very long time. I'm not sure if La Haine would've made it if I had, but I'm pretty sure that I'll be kicking myself for not including Before Sunrise once I see it again. It's the most romantic film of all-time, IMO, it's on my 100 and I'm delighted to see so many other people are falling for this couple.

Here's what I wrote when I saw La Haine not to long ago

La Haine is by far the greatest crime film I've ever seen. Three minorities in the French projects vow revenge on police after there friend is brutalized. The group of friends a Jew (played by Vincent Cassel), an Arab, and a black cause havoc where ever they go. Especially the Jew (Vinz) who has a new gun that he picked up at a riot. The film follows these testosterone filled characters for a mere 19 hours, and despite having no character development, you feel like you know them piece by piece. The film is true realism, shot in black and white, and never does more than it can handle. Yet it is raw to the core. I view this film as a more brutal version of City of God. The director and writer Kassovitz does perfect at both of his jobs. The film editing made this film heart pounding, and the movie never had a dry moment. Filled with anecdotes and witty conversations, it's successful in making you think. During the concluding scene I was sitting with my mouth wide open in shock with the excellence I just witnessed. In the wrong hands the whole movie would have collapsed right there, but instead I was mesmerized by it. La Haine was endlessly awesome, and is a film I will never forget. I don't give five stars much, but I'd be dammed if I wouldn't do it for this true gem. One of the greatest movies ever filmed, high in artistic and entertainment value.

And that's pretty much why it's my number one. I rarely have a desire to see a movie immediately after I watch it, but this one I ended up seeing twice in the same week. It's a delightful and intense experience, and even though I like far from a project, I felt connected with the characters.

Two more really great movies. Probably one of the best things Ethan Hawke ever did is Before Sunrise.

There are only two movies from this list that I absolutely do not like so far. Considering what I expect to show up, I think I'm going to like the vast majority of movies here.

I had never heard of them. Before Sunrise looks popular, but still my radar system never detected it. To me, this list is filled with too much obscurity. It's sad.

Though, I noticed Target has Sling Blade on Blu-ray for $5. I would have got it, but the disc was unfortunately made by Lionsgate and my Blu-ray player has had issues with not playing Lionsgate Blu-rays, so I try to avoid them.

I was never a fan of either, but I do associate them with the decade.

But I do agree that age plays a big role in a person's perception of the 90s (or any decade, really). As for me, I turned 9 years old in 1990 and I graduated from high school in 1999.

I'm not seriously expecting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- or Power Rangers -- but, I have may a different view of the '90s than some of the people here who were actually born in the '90s or late '80s.

My '90s were spent watching things I found at Blockbuster -- or at the movie theater -- or on cable TV. I saw a lot of stuff and not everything really appealed to me then. So certain stuff -- didn't grab my attention. And I absolutely did watch a lot of "bad" movies and I have a fondness for that kind of stuff. I remember the '90s and it has a distinct feel to me. So obviously, all these damn Japanese films mean nothing to me. I never felt connected to Japan -- I admit I do practically prefer to watch movies with Americans, just as I prefer color movies over black and white, etc. I have certain stuff that makes me happy. Chungking Express was like -- probably the first foreign movie I may have ever saw. I caught that on HBO or something in the '90s. I thought it was interesting, but I never felt the urge to watch more Asian movies afterwards. In fact, due to probably not having the internet at the time, I was more trying to figure out when the hell I was going to see Chungking Express again. I remember searching through an old TV Guide type magazine to find out when it was gonna be on again so I could set the VCR and tape it, which I did.

Now, there are people younger than me who have seen all of these movies, but we have had different experiences. And frankly, you can't tell me, "Watch this BECAUSE IT'S GOOD." I am a free thinker with a rebellious streak. Telling me something is good because everyone else likes it or finds it important means nothing to me. I will find a way to slaughter your sacred cows.

Now THIS is what I'm talking about!!!!!!!!!

I voted for both of these films - Army of Darkness at number 7 and The Nightmare Before Christmas at number 14.

I've never been much of a fan of the first two installments of the Evil Dead trilogy, but Army of Darkness is hilarious. Everything about it is so over the top and ridiculous yet infinitely quotable and entertaining as hell.

Shop smart. Shop S-Mart!

Although not directed by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas still carries his signature goth style, off the wall characters, and child-like view of the world. Love it.

That's not true at all. These past two movies are what I called typical '90s. They're not obvious and boring. Well, actually, they are, but the point is, I didn't say they were. Anyway, I don't care for them, but that's another thing.

Even if something from his own list shows up he will probably complain that he shouldn't have voted for it, like he did last year with the millennium list.

Only one move that I made last time breaks my heart and it was putting Hedwig and the Angry Inch at #2 to give it more points, while putting Brothers lower (thinking it wouldn't get on) and it ALMOST did and would have if I had put it higher. Now who wouldn't be pissed if something like that happened to them with their own favorites?

It's his version of fun to moan about everything, just go with it.

Moaning is therapeutic when none of my own films have shown up so far. I'm in pain over this. When people are in pain, don't they cry? Don't they moan? You ever hear a zombie whistling Dixie when it goes about eating brains while its arms fall off? No. It moans.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (http://www.movieforums.com/reviews/the_nightmare_before_christmas.html)

A modern-day classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a confident, original creation, and its success can perhaps be attributed to the lack of same in today's cinemas. It ranked in at #14, it's an absolutely deveatating film, that still preserves its colorful beauty. I love the sugar cube in the coffee moment. Haven't seen Whisper of the Heart, and I don't intend to.

Nightmare Before Christmas

Glad this one made the list, it is wildly imaginative with the animation and has memorable songs to boot. I adore it really and an added bonus as it was one of the last few animated films to not be invaded by a "Hollywood Cast". (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=780565)

It's kinda weird how the 'emo' culture like Hot Topics have resurrected this film and made it their "calling card" it deserves so much more.

Army of Darkness MY PICK

Listen up you primitive screwhead....you must watch this movie.

In the third installment of the Evil Dead Trilogy, our hero Ash is sent back in time to 1300 A.D. where he is enslaved and sent to the pit. After defeating the evil deadite that lingers in the depths of the pit, he is hailed as the chosen one. Ash, wants nothing to do with them and only wants to get back home, but the only way to do his is to retrieve the book of the dead. Unfortunately for Ash, he awakens the dead while taking the book, and now must battle the army of Darkness before he goes back to his own time.

Back in the year 1981, Sam Raimi and a group of friends created one of the most terrifying horror movies to date, The Evil Dead. Again in 1987 Raimi and Co. managed to create yet another genuine horror experience with Evil Dead II. Now with the third installment in this series, Raimi gives us a comedic cult classic film that will have you quoting every piece of dialogue in your every day life....or at least I do.

Most trilogies tend to suck by the third film, Blade Trinity, The Matrix Revolutions, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End to name a few, but here Darkness manages to make itself a stand alone film and finish the story up quite nicely. If you're looking for the ultimate horror experience, then this film is not for you. Instead Darkness is full of comedic dialogue and actions. Our hero ASH spits out classic one-liners that so many people try to copy today...I'm looking your way Duke Nukem.

Bruce Campbell is ASH. His character evolves throughout the trilogy and it's in this third installment that he is the badass we know today. Here he has the trademark chainsaw, boomstick, one-liners, metallic hand, etc. Campbell will always be known for this one character. He's such a dumb coward in a comical way that we still end up rooting for him. Campbell is the master of physical comedy and he uses it to his advantage here, fighting an army of mini Ash people, splitting away from his evil self and getting his face sucked down an unknown demon hole from a book. Which shows some nice prosthetic work as well.

Speaking of which, that's what makes the film even more enjoyable. The insane bizarre comedic tone. Whether you like slapstick comedy or have a dark funny bone, this film is delightful for all. I never thought I would laugh so much at someone pouring boiling hot water down their throat.

The effects are great and still low key. You can tell which deadites are guys in suits with the black fabric behind the eyes and the other skeletons being held up as props. Yet that adds to the 'do it yourself' flavour these films have always had. I love the continuity issues, the obviously fake green screen and the wires you see.

Some people have Star Wars, others have Lord of the Rings....I have The Evil Dead films.

Funny Games

Haven't seen the original, but here is my old review of the remake.

A family head up to their vacation home when they are interrupted by two young polite boys who want to play vicious and dangerous games with them. The games result in the cost of people lives, as the family is taken hostage.

This is of course the American remake of the same film from the same director. Not only is it a remake, but it takes the Gus Van Sant route and makes the film a shot for shot remake. The film stars reservoir dog Mr. Orange himself, Tom Roth. The blonde and beautiful Naomi Watts and the always memorable Michael Pitt. Funny Games manages to take the act of violence and make us want to turn our heads. We go see the films like Saw and Hostel wanting to see the disgusting depravity of it all and Michael Haneke uses this to his advantage and play off that notion in the film. We as the audience expect one thing and are given another.

Another film I recently reviewed was Martyrs, which showed us the lead characters and how they had no hope at all of ever surviving. I didn't like that and how it was represented in the film, I had a hard time trying to connect to the characters knowing they were stuck in such a horrible place. I gave the film kudos for making me squirm. Funny Games didn't make me squirm but it did have the same feel for the characters. The moment you know everything is going to end badly is when Paul (Michael Pitt) turns to the camera and talks directly to the audience. This is further proved when the odd yet fascinating scene in which he literally rewinds the film to change the outcome of some events. This tells us that these two characters are in control of everything. Everything they choose to do to the family and everything they choose to let us see. The last shot of the film is very striking.

Michael Haneke knew exactly what he wanted to do with the film and when he first released the original back in 1997 he was quoted as saying "if the film was a success, it would be because audiences had misunderstood the meaning behind it." I can see traces of that in the film. He knows we as a society are desensitized to violence, so he made the film come off as such. But instead of the film being violent, it's merely about violence itself. Every death takes place off screen and when we finally see the image of blood, it's more striking because of the restrain used earlier. Long still camera shots are used to let the audience sit uncomfortably, waiting to cut away to another shot. We are stuck with the images of the characters in their most humiliating moments.

The two antagonists, are young boys dressed in white. Another play on societies conventions of good versus evil, black versus white. They are extremely polite, instead of rude and abrasive. The small things these characters say have such a sinister feel to them, even if they are the most harmless words. Suddenly a line like "I'm sorry, I've been so clumsy, I do apologize" feels as if he is threatening and about to do harm. They are always calm, cool and collective.

Funny Games is something of an experiment and Haneke is the one who is either laughing or disappointed. He knew what he wanted and he got it, whether or not we know of it. I won't bother seeing the original, as reviews state they are identical aside from the obvious (Language and Actors). Funny Games as a film is directed with precision and acted strongly from the entire cast. Even the young boy surprised me. At times I was reminded of Mr. Orange screaming on the floor in agony because Roth uses that same high pitch voice. I know there are people out there who detest the film, which is why it works. If you love it, you're sick, if you hate it, you missed the message. If you think you got the message, you probably didn't. Me? I don't know exactly how I feel about it, I do know I didn't hate or love it. I guess I'm that anomaly in the equation.

It's okay to hate it, Miss Vicky.

I don't hate it.

Like I said, I can't decide if I like it or not, which has happened with my initial viewings of other movies - some of which I later ended up loving. In fact, the movie I put at number 3 on my 90s list was one of those. It'll take a rewatch or two to decide.

Heh. I like that I can check and see what film that #3 is. Glad you warmed up to it after all.

Didn't like Boondock Saints and haven't watched Funny Games. Not sure when I'll watch it as I was more interested in the newer version (it's just this Michael Pitt and Boardwalk Empire love thing :D)

I didnt put a list in but im enjoying watching the controversy unfold. Im actually surprised that Funny Games (the original) doesnt get more love, i thought it was pretty damn good.

Funny Games is the only movie so far on this list that I have no intention of watching. I don't want to watch a film where the entire point of the film is the director sneering at you for watching it at all. I don't like torture porn and I don't like films in which the audience is treated with contempt. Usually I believe in watching a film before judging it, but in this case the only appropriate response to the film seems to be to choose not to watch it at all.

I'm still 0/38:(. I still reckon at least 20 will make it though.

Was not on my list but the original Funny Games is one of my favourite films but just didn't pop into my head at the time for voting. Nice to see others voted for it though.

Remake was okay but the original film has the better cast and the two boys are far creepier in the original.

Wow, I didn't expect Funny Games. I love the film (the 2008 one, haven't watched the original,) but I remember the remake getting smashed by most critics, which is shot for shot, so I assumed nothing had changed, really. I didn't think it was popular around here. Guess I was wrong. :p

I had The Boondock Saints at #6 ! I am glad that it made the list!!

I have heard of the other movie, but I will probably not watch it. Doesn't seem like my cup of tea.

Blue was a well-made film but I didn't feel much for it. It seemed a bit too aloof somehow, to me.

I've seen both Funny Games and I much prefer the remake's cast, particularly the great Tim Roth. As Mark pointed out before, the remote control scene underlines the director's message. I don't agree with that message but the film was still intense to me and I enjoyed the performances. Maybe I'm a bad guy. :)

Another scene that I consider important is their conversation on the boat about "real vs. fake" worlds. There's some very chilling dialogue there.

I disliked Boondock Saints. It wasn't nearly as clever or entertaining as it seemed to think it was, IMO. But the documentary Overnight about its ego-tripping director who burned all his bridges before they barely were begun to be built, is a fascinating documentary.

Deadite, I agree with your feelings on Blue. It was well made but detached and aloof, certainly. I found White and Red much more engaging. I also didn't like the bit with the mice.
