I don't really wanna say. I've mentioned a few of them in the other thread. I wanna be nice and keep the countdown surprising.

This countdown sucks. Not only do the movies suck, and none of my movies have made the list so far, and many probably won't -- including films I put high on my list strategically -- but the other random conversations going on in this thread are boring as well.
Lol! We've had 4 films, Dude... and you're already tantruming that they weren't yours.
I think you should do your own personal Top 100 of the 90s... at least you'd be happy that at least every film mentioned was on your list.

Just saw Speed. Lots of fun. Like Die Hard which I saw for the first time last night (shocker, I know), it manages to rekindle that boyish excitement about explosions and car chases and shootouts that I thought I'd grown out of. Probably wouldn't have made my list but I'm glad it's on here.

Beauty and the Beast (1991) is a deserving movie. it's about a crazy biznatch who decides to partake in bestiality, talk to dishes and candles, and still manages to have a fine taste for libraries and scholarly type-junk. the weakest part is that the beast turns into a lame-looking disney-prince at the end. disney shoulda stuck with the bestiality theme through to the end, no question

Not my favourite Burton/Depp collaboration, but a decent one. Vincent Price has class and charm in his small role of Edward's creator and I love the look of the suburban homes. I've never been a fan of Ryder, so she does little for me in this picture.

07-13-13, 08:05 PM
What's the difference between being bi and having bi tendencies?
The difference is in how you identify yourself. Not that this is really an appropriate place to discuss this. But I say I have bi tendencies rather than really identifying as a bisexual because I prefer men. I'm generally more attracted to men both sexually and romantically. On the other hand, there are some women that I find very atrractive and if the opportunity presented itself I wouldn't say no. But I don't see myself ever being in a commited relationship with a woman nor would I actively seek out an encounter.

Out of all of the movies I've seen that are Burton's, I'd say it's probably his best. I think it's the most unique and the most enjoyable.

I see. Thanks for the info. :)

As for Skep's question, I think it would still be well worth seeing anyway if you like scary supernatural suspense. The performances are also moving and watching the characters relate to each other is engrossing. I have seen the movie three times myself and it still has some very scary parts for me, like the scene with the slave's ghost and the "dad's gun" scene.

It's pretty contrived, yet that's sort of the point. It's not really a horror movie, more like a sociological mystery-thriller.
People I knew hated it because it defied expectation. They complained about the "monsters", complained it was too slow and talky. Those "flaws" were precisely what I enjoyed about it. It focused on character and setting and psychological horror, gradually revealing itself to be a study of human weakness and society based on fear.

Yeh they are, almost identical running times with 187/188 minutes. Short Cuts seemed longer to me though, where as Magnolia was put together better and I could feel the build up stronger. You should definitely try Magnolia, it's one of those films that if you enjoy it there's a chance you'll love it like some people do, even though PT Anderson takes a lot of his technical stuff from directors like Scorsese and Altman it's not a bad thing and there are some wonderful scenes in the film and fantastic individual shots/scenes, watch Boogie Nights too if you haven't already seen it - which I'm pretty sure you haven't.

Two very decent entries!
The Sixth Sense is by far the best thing Shyamalan has done (that I've seen). I also liked Unbreakable, but I think this one is better. It still works even if you know the plot twist. It's really well done. It didn't make my list, but it was certainly close.
Short Cuts is the first entry that made my list, although it was pretty low (it got 5 points or something from me). It's a great film! PTA's brilliant (sort of) tribute to this film (the two movies have many differences in tone, though), Magnolia, also made my list.

Law of large numbers. A bigger sample would be better though.
The law of large numbers has absolutely nothing to do with this. For one, the law involves random events, and the eight films revealed are not randomly chosen. For another, the law applies to situations where a large number of experiments are carried out under the same circumstances, while this is a single poll using criteria we've never used before.
I bet 10,000 dollars that my English language nominations will be on a higher average position than yours.

Overall, people have have watched on average 300 1990's movies before submitting their lists, of these there are around 150 movies that most members have watched. These movies that everybody has watched, such as Speed, Con Air, The Sixth Sense, etc, have a much greater chance of showing up on this top 100 list than movies of similar quality but more obscure.

Ok... those 8 films I mentioned are just an example of you saying that there aren't many great 90s films...
Secondly, you're saying that this list is second rate and, the way I see it you're saying is a farce, as there aren't many great 90s films that everyone has seen... which may be true...
... but you just admitted that you voted for a bunch of Foreign Language films on a mainly English speaking website before calling the list second rate.

After this list is completed, surely, in the grand scheme of things... this will be MoFo's Greatest Films Of The 90s... thus cementing the populous of the site's choices and making these films the great ones.
In short terms... What makes a film great? Surely the ones that have masses of fans... the ones that have made a connection to the most people.
No way, Rodent, this list has to exactly mirror what someone else already decided was the ultimate best-of 90s list. Copypaste, end of.

Yeah, if the Top 25 aren't exactly the same as the 25 I picked...
... then this list is complete sh*te.
Actually, it won't be... Speed was my #13 and came in at 98th... so this list is automatically nullified.

Those are 8 movies. There aren't hundreds of great movies from the 1990's that everybody here has watched.
In fact, I might say that there are less than 20 great 1990's movies among the 150 1990's movies everybody has watched.

Harry, when the hell is Kindergarten Cop showing up on this list?
Speaking of second-rate, I just looked at your list again.

Going back to Edward Scissorhands I don't know what to think of it anymore. I used to love it, so much that it was top 40 I think on my fav films list. I recently revisited it though for my new list and it just didn't really do anything for me. I'm hoping it was just a one off and that in the future I will rediscover my love for it.

Not a single one of my picks has shown up yet. If Princess Mononoke doesn't rank, there will be hell to pay.

Define "great"?
I great movie is a movie that has the capacity to touch the soul of a set of people in a way that they did not know it was possible: they expand their set of known emotions. I very much doubt a movie like Con Air has that capacity. It may work as an effective action movie but there are many thousands of those movies.

The Sixth Sense and Speed are great, they didn't make my list, but they definitely deserve to be here.

Can we wait 'til at least halfway before we start dissing the list?
Yeah, I admit I shouldn't have made that negative comment based on a tiny sample of movies.

Con Air obviously did hit a nerve with a very particular set of people... or it wouldn't have made the grade.

But someone else's definition of great may be as simple as they thoroughly enjoyed the time they spent watching it. I love movies, but they're still just movies.

Perhaps. Daniel D included it in his top 3 so he may have been strongly touched by it.
Anyway, I promise I will not rant again in this thread.

If I was doing my list in order of actual quality it would be bottom or even not on, if I was doing it on favourites it would also be near the bottom, but like I said I did it tactically and put those likely to get less nominations near the top to give them a greater chance.
And I wouldn't say strongly touched, it's an action popcorn film that knows its over the top and ridiculous, but it's a whole lot of fun with a fantastic action cast, been a guilty pleasure always when growing up, so I am glad I was able to get it on the list :)
I've included a mixture of lesser quality but interesting films and more well known ones on my list.

Based on what?
Well, reading critiker profiles, I noticed people there usually have around 1,000 - 2,000 movies listed, these are probably most of the movies these users have watched. For the 1990's we usually have 200 - 400 movies listed. I am guessing that the users in this forum usually have watched around the same number of movies as the users in critiker have watched.
Usually the proportion of movies shared between critiker users is around 50%, though for relatively recent movies the proportion rises, so I guess that around 150 1990's movies are mostly common knowledge among the forumers here. out of these 150 movies, I guess that around 50- 60 will make this list, so we will have many above average movies.

He's decorated his toilet to look like one of the bad guys, and whenever the Young Guns start firing away in the movie, Rodent fires away himself.

I see. I ordered the movies in my top 25 list based on preference and not strategically. If I had done strategically I think I would have removed or downgraded a few more popular movies and included or upgraded some more obscure movies.

Why do you think I will not keep this promise? I never made any promise before on this forum.
Because I'm quite certain that once the list is complete (if not sooner) you'll be throwing another one of your anti-Hollywood, pro-anime tantrums and whining about how few foreign films made the cut. You may not have made promises before, but you've got a history of tantrums and frequently edited tl;dr posts full of meaningless stats nobody but you cares about anyway.
You bitched about the lack of anime/foreign films in the Millennium list and the position given to Spirited Away (and you weren't even here for the voting on that one). Why should I believe that you won't do it again?
