I'm not upset over Fight Club beating The Big Lebowski. I love it a lot. It was my #2 90s movie, in fact. But the rest? 13th was the highest I had any of them ranked.

The Rodent

All of them.

Apart from the 25 he did commentaries for, obviously.

Though, I am dubious he didn't just use the synopsis on Wiki for those.

I am going to sound like a hypocrite in here because I complain about people who moan about the list sometimes. But I can't believe that The Big Lebowski is below Fight Club, I mean I really like Fight Club too, but The Big Lebowski is a different level of class when compared to it, it is much better and I can't believe it is below it, I kind of feel bad for not putting it higher on my list, but it still should have been in the top 5. The Shawshank Redemption too, that's another film I like, but shouldn't be above The Big Lebowski :(

Like I said. It's your own fault. :p

Fight Club is better than The Big Lebowski, though.

Fight Club and Shawshank Redemption are both really good, even great films, it just annoys me the amount of people who think they are special or something. I think I might prefer Fight Club actually, a lot of people who like it seem to be young males who like the aggressive side, but it's a much better film than that, it's ultimately a satirical comedy that takes aims at corporate companies and that, and I think the ending works well with the message of the film. Yeh, I do really like it, not sure why I am that angry.

It's not aimed against the companies. The film is portraying people who are revolting against the mainstream system, while criticizing the companies in the dialogue. It's very ambiguous. The film doesn't make any statements.
It's about the awkwardness and nothingness of a man in the modern society, his subconscious way of escaping his boring, monotonous and depressing faith and how he struggles through this 'moment in his life' in a rather extreme way. :p
I'm a big fan of the first half of the film. The second half is necessary for entertaining and stuff, but it's the first half that made me fell in love with it.

I am aware that many people like it for the violence, as it is very realistically potrayed, but there is really much more to find in it.

It also works extremely well as a dark comedy, as the whole movie is just plain hilarious.

Yeh well corporate companies and such are connectedd to the 'mainstream system' and it's about how they influence people's lifes, like at the beginning where it shows his fat, and the thing about where soap is sold and its recycled from people's fat, funny how they are mocking people's greed and vanity.

And I might prefer the second half, I don't know though, the end definietly makes sense though, it wouldn't work without it, and watching it again makes it interesting knowing what's happening, it all makes sense.

I can't even pick which half of Fight Club I like more, because the second half was so unexpected. I loved that it went places I hadn't anticipated at all and radically increased its scope. The first is cleaner, purer, and more fun to watch, but the audacity of the second is pretty incredible the first time you see it. And not because of the twist.

Yes, but the film itself doesn't aim at it specifically, in my opinion. It just as well aims at the people who are mocking the system. Maybe even more so.

Why do you dislike Fight Club so much?

Fight Club attempts to offer a convincing argument for business/office boredom as a cause of modern male unhappiness, but eventually throws all of that to the wind when it descends into identity crisis gimmickry. It's also completely lacking in hope; the only option the film gives for escape from this sense of unfulfillment is release through extreme violence. I'm not saying the movie condones violence (it doesn't) but it pessimistically portrays it as the only choice left for people like its protagonist. And aside from that, it just isn't very entertaining either; the entire movie is dreary and unenjoyable, IMO.

The Gunslinger45

I see Fight Club as the movie about a closeted gay man struggling with the part of himself that DESPERATELY wants to be straight. Tyler is the personification of everything Ed Norton wants to be. And Tyler is very straight, while Norton is shown to be asexual. When he fights with Tyler he is actually fighting his deepest desires. And when it is over, he comes to terms with who he is, accepts his sexuality, and exits the closet.

Also helps the guy who wrote the story was a gay man too.

The Big Lebowski coming in sixth is why strategic voting is a bad thing. I haven't actually seen it, but it still deserves to be in the top 3 based on how popular it is.

I'm not saying I would like it, but I'm saying it seems to have an objectively larger fanbase than any other film from the 90s, besides Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas. I didn't worry too much about placement on my list. I put some underdogs I love in higher position than some other popular movies I also love. I think it can get a bit ridiculous to strictly rank each film higher or lower. Some films I feel are equal but different. I may position them higher or lower arbitrarily by mood, not by some totally objective quality measure.

I find it very hard to judge what's best or better than something else and I change my mind a lot, so, that's why I hate doing lists and things. What's fabulous one minute is forgotten the next. Only way I guess you can really tell is by noticing what sticks around a lot longer with you, but who always has time for that?

Seven is incredibly overrated. Maybe more than Big Lebowski, and I don't have a problem with Seven. I just don't think it's that great. I've seen it three or four times and it just doesn't thrill me. It's good, but it's not mind-blowing good. It's a shame that something like Silence of the Lambs is a lot lower. That's a much better movie.

5. The Shawshank Redemption - 4

Good film, although it has an irritating plothole near the end and an overly happy ending, compared to what happens earlier. It's a nice movie, but I really don't get why it's considered one of the best of all time by some people. Oh well, there are worse films that could be considered 'the best'.

Shawshank is a competent, average, rather bland film. It isn't bad. By this point I am used to people acting like it is special for some reason. I guess it's predictably life affirming in its unthreatening Hallnmark way. Not sure whose idea it was to start treating it as if it were particularly good though.

Films from my list that haven't/will not make the cut:

Safe
Wild at Heart
Cape Fear
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

At #9, Safe was the only movie from my top ten to miss the cut. It's a truly amazing slow-burn psychological drama, with Julianne Moore giving a fantastic performance in the scariest film ever made about suburban alienation. I know Tyler1 had it very high on his list as well, but I'm not sure if anyone else voted for it or not.

A fairly good film, well acted (Freeman is reliably good and the patchy Pitt and Spacey are in form), quite atmospheric, not particularly exciting. Worth watching.

Perhaps it would have borne more consideration for my top 100 of the decade than Shawshank did... nah, it's better than that film, but still no chance whatever of getting close to my 100.

I am actually so annoyed with myself. I am having a Sexy moment here. This list is ruined. AND IT'S ALL MY FAULT.

Hopefully 4th is the highest I could have got it :(

Se7en was on my list by the way, 25th, actually if I did it non strategically the points it might have got may have cancelled out what I would have gave Lebowski, not too bad.

Got to say I'm a little disappointed Shawshank landed at 5. Was sure that would be a top 3 entrant.

And rather surprised Se7en got so high, didn't realise there was so much love for it on here. Not complaining though as I think it's an excellent film. I didn't vote for it though as I'm never really sure if I think it's a real personal favourite or just a great film. It's just such a bleak, nasty film that I'm not sure I love it. A few great performances and lots of vivid moments. And its finale still works. Obviously there was the huge shock the first time you watch it but on repeat viewings it now works as a brutally uncomfortable and tense wait that seems to go on forever with Spacey taunting the boastful Pitt. Se7en also seemed to set out the template for just about every serial killer film that followed in terms of mood, style, aesthetic etc but none of them really came close to matching it in terms of its darkness and smarts. So as a film it defined the genre but at the same time kind of made it obsolete as no other film could touch it.

One of the problems I had with Se7en on first viewing was that I saw the ending coming from a mile off and thought it was a little too easy, but I actually like it, and the whole film even more now.

And Camo, nice to see someone else voting for A Bronx Tale.

Lots of people didn't vote for Lebowski and did vote for Shawshank and SE7EN, including me (sorry but that's how I feel). Lebowski made the list, and very high at that. I'm more upset at forgetting a couple of movies that might have made the list but didn't. Well, I'm not that troubled since in a couple of years, we'll vote this decade again, have numerous new members and none of this will eventually matter. :)

Shawshank was my number 1. One of my favourite movies of all time. The scene with Brooks when he gets out of prison is probably my favourite scene in movie history.

Se7en was 24 on my list. I shouldn't of include it so that Shawshank would be higher, but honestly I only had seen it once when I made the list and with the second viewing it would probably be my number 11

It's atmospheric, horrifying and has an interesting concept. Fincher's directing is also top notch.

Alot of the Soprano's actors have been down that road, but he's different as his crimes were after the Sopranos. Here's an article about my favourite character Paulie (Tony Sirico) talking about his crimes - http://articles.latimes.com/1990-07-15/entertainment/ca-379_1_tony-sirico

The irony being, Paulie says something along the lines of "i scraped by in the 70's during the Colombo wars" . In real life Tony Sirico could've been part of those wars.

Paulie my fab character in Sopranos easy.

Surprised how close the last 3 have been. no wonder that no one is guessing the correct order.

on a side note does everyone notice that the drawing of "John Doe" from Se7en is the same drawing of Keiser Schoze from Usual Suspects? Just noticed recently.

Se7en is the 14th film from my list to make it. I had it at #23 which was probably too low in retrospect. I did not expect it to make the top 10, despite it being my favorite Fincher film by far.

I'm not sure if it's supposed to be gritty.
The atmosphere and darkness is obviously created by the lighting and the music and of course the events in the film.

I think the 'neatness' and 'tidiness' work pretty well here in the sense that the villain of this film works and thinks exactly like that. They are captured in his web and the film shows that very well by being so strict, in my opinion.

I love Se7en, it's on my 100, but it didn't make my 25 for the 90's. I'm slightly surprised to see it this high. I though it'd probably make top 10, but I don't think I've have predicted it this high.

So... it's gritty? :p

I mean, if Fincher didn't want it to be gritty, why did he make it so gritty?

I can completely understand your reasoning behind your second point, but imo I think that the neatness defeats the point. The film is ultimately a "who-dunnit" and then a "why-dunnit", but the complete change in tone after John Doe comes into the film threw me off, and I just thought it didn't hold up well enough to the rest of the film.
