Nicolas Cage + 1990's = Fantastic Film :)

There was more answers than questions. Shawshank stands pretty tall right about now.

Even though we don't have any free will. Which means that no matter how much of a Chinese tragedy this list has been, it was meant to be.
So Nic Cage had no choice but to say that dialogue.

That's right. Nic Cage had no choice but to be who he is. He'll have no choice but to pick the future movies and roles he's gonna do. He is an accident of nature and a good one at that!

Se7en is too depressing. And cheap. Once you've seen it, you don't really need to keep going back to it.
On the contrary,I'd say it's a rewatchable film.

So... it's gritty? :p
I mean, if Fincher didn't want it to be gritty, why did he make it so gritty?
I can completely understand your reasoning behind your second point, but imo I think that the neatness defeats the point. The film is ultimately a "who-dunnit" and then a "why-dunnit", but the complete change in tone after John Doe comes into the film threw me off, and I just thought it didn't hold up well enough to the rest of the film.
I don't think I really get your criticism. Se7en is not particularly a gritty film and never really tries to be, in my opinion. It's filmed in a very stylish way and the cinematography gives it a warm, yet very dark look.
Fincher's Fight Club is way more "gritty" than this film, for instance. At least, that's how I see it.
SPOILERS!
I personally thought the ending was quite brilliant. It goes against the formulaic detective genre. Suddenly the villain takes control, despite the fact that he's seemingly unable to do anything anymore, because he gave himself up.
It worked very well for me.

Between the actors and director, there's some great talent in Fight Club, and it shows. But I really can't F'N stand this movie, or the naive, dumbass college kid types who worship it. And I don't mean everyone who likes the movie is a jackass, because everyone has their own taste. I mean the type of person who would hold up traffic to do a protest or get a tattoo to express themselves-these are the kind of dolts that get under my skin. People like that seem to really love this movie. I don't see anything cool or clever about it.

Lmao.. what's gay about Fight Club?
Well the movie was based off a book written by Chuck Palahniuk, an openly gay man. Ed Norton's character is shown to be a sexually ambiguous man. He is troubled, but coops by blending into communities where he does not belong. Until Helena Bonham Carter's character comes along. She calls him out as a fraud, and only after this does Tyler appear. Tyler and Norton are the same person as we know, and Tyler says he is the personification of everything Ed Norton wishes he could be. Tyler is also VERY straight and it is he who sleeps with Carter's character and not Norton. Tyler and Norton are at odds with each other quite a bit, particularly towards the end. And since they are the same person, that means Ed Norton is fighting his own desires. He makes a comment early on where he dislikes people who spend all their time at the gym, but his idealized self is a ripped Brad Pitt. This leads to lots of self destructive behavior, and ends when Norton "kills" Tyler finally accepting who he is.
So one interpretation of Fight Club is that it is a story of a closeted gay man, in conflict with the part of himself that desperately wants to be straight.
Of course that is one interpretation. One of many. It is does not prove or disprove other interpretations. But it does make the movie a lot more interesting to me.

I've never thought of it like that. That's interesting. BUT what does that mean about Marla? Why does he hold hands with her at the end of the movie? Does it mean he is accepting his own homosexuality and she, as a woman (woman = femininity = gayness) symbolizes that? Hence, he has become one with being gay?
To me, it's just always looked like a gay fantasy. Living in a rundown house with the hottest man in the world (Tyler). Fleeing society, not accepting the normal way of living. Tyler is the man every gay man wants for himself. Yet, another thing I see with many gay men -- gay men, I feel, are often searching for masculinity and a strong male figure. And hence a strong male identity for themselves. Gay men like what they want to be. Thus, it's also about finding your manhood and is why straight men can identify with it -- if you don't look for any gay subtext, it's a story about a man who is a lousy man, who can't be A REAL MAN to a woman, like with Marla, and in the end, he finally becomes a real man by doing the better thing and letting go of the childish, juvenile, id-driven Tyler Durden man inside him, who's been corrupting him and making him stupid and self centered. Marla just wants to be his woman and she follows him everywhere trying to land him, but he won't give up his childish demon. You could also interpret the movie as being the total opposite of accepting homosexuality and actually see it as accepting heterosexuality. Tyler Durden can also be seen as a gay figure that corrupts The Narrator's life.

Think of it as a platonic hand hold. At the end of Speed we got Keanu and Sandra Bullock making out on rubble. End of True Lies, Arnie and Jamie Lee are kissing with a nuke going off in the distance. Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom? Indy kisses the girl. Fight Club? Holding hands.

If it's a platonic hand hold, then it's interesting that the world blows up in front of their eyes. That's quite a statement about being gay, then. It's like it's saying, "If people turn gay, the world's gonna fall apart."
It also puts a new spin on that penis reappearing just before the end credits start.

I’m not really sure where all the Fight Club backlash has come from. I think some people’s problem with Fight Club is simply its popularity – in breaking the imdb top 10 it lost its cult cred, or something.
Or is it that people feel that people like it for the 'wrong' reasons, like Scarface?
Anyway, Fight Club was #7 on my top 25. I think it's great.
It’s a good adaptation of a good book. It’s smart, it’s funny, it looks great and has one of the best ending scenes I’ve seen, complete with Pixies music. It may, along with The Sixth Sense, have been partially responsible for the rise of ‘twist’ movies in the early 2000s, but unlike many of the imitators, it doesn’t rely on the twist. It’s still a good movie even if you know exactly what to expect.
Ed Norton is great as the insomniac protagonist, Helena Bonham Carter gives a performance that isn’t just the ‘crazy hair, crazy costume, crazy eyes’ of the last decade, and Brad Pitt embodies a particularly memorable screen character in Tyler Durden. Looks great, sounds great, entertaining and thought provoking.
A stylish and cutting satire with an apocalyptic, fin de siècle vibe to it, definitely one of the best movies of the 90s.

That interpretation sounds absurd to me. I don't think there's a single scene in Fight Club that implies homosexuality. I always saw it as a movie about a depressed, lonely character who suffers from mental illness and feels alienated from the world. That's what the movie is about. This interpretation sounds a lot more logical, and to me the movie will always make perfect sense that way.

The interpretation and meaning of the relationship between Tyler and the Narrator... is explained by Brad Pitt at the end.
The Narrator is a depressed and held back character, bound by the rules of society and commercialism, law and morality... and deep down in his subconscious, he hates it.
Tyler is the opposite of Norton. Subconsciously Pitt is everything the Narrator wants to be. The Narrator's mind breaks and splits into two parts... his real self, and the side of his character that his real self didn't have the guts to be.
What's more interesting, is that Norton is never referred to by an actual name, the closest is when people call him "Sir"... yet it still comes as a shock when he suddenly gets referred to as Tyler Durden by Marla.
The interpretation for me was discovering who the Narrator actually is. Is his name actually Tyler and his real personality really is Pitt, that had been hidden away in the subconscious.
This would mean the "real Tyler" was unleashed, had a few months in the open so the Norton Tyler could get his life together?
Or is it exactly as Pitt says... he simply just is all the things the Narrator wants to be but didn't have the guts to do those things so basically broke down and fabricated a character called Tyler Durden so he could be what he wanted to be? And we just never get to know the Narrator's name.
Or a mix of the two.
I tend to go with Pitt's description. Psychologically, the Narrator was in a bad place and even started attending cancer groups etc.
It's an open ended film really. It's left for the viewer to decide, which is why the film is as good as it is... it plays with the viewer and everyone can take something different away from it.

As I said, one of many. It is open ended as you say. I just think the interpretation I subscribe to is more fun. :D

In terms of art it should be given that the individual's subjective perception of the work of art should be his objective opinion about the value of such a work of art. So it's a given that when talking about films individuals should talk in absolutes about their subjective opinion about movies: when I said that movie X is better than movie Y that means that the film X's effect on me was greater/more positive than Y's. That's all there is, I may try to rationalize why the film X had such strong effect on me relative to Y but another person rarely fully shares the exact same relative feelings about the pair of films.
Woo let's just stay close-minded about other views on art because it's teh internets. Who needs progress anyway, that's gay, or something.

Fight Club is a very good film. But too many people love it for the wrong reasons, it works as a character study, satire, dark comedy etc. and has a very intelligent script, but most people just love the violence and such. It seems a bit different with people on the forum, but it's score on IMDB frustrates me.
3.5+ maybe.
I hope Pulp Fiction wins. I don't get people wanting it to lose just because it's too popular or talked about, strange people, or the love for it is too much, it's the coolest and probably the best film of the 90s for me.

I am upset about that. BTW, if you'd even put it one place higher than you did, Lebowski would've been #5. When two movies tie in points, the one with the most votes gets the higher position.
But since Fight Club was number 2 on my list, I still think it's one place lower than it should have been, even if Lebowski had made number 1.

Fight Club is overflowing with ideas. Many, maybe most, of them are stupid. The philosophy is retarded and obnoxious. But take away all of the nonsense and there's still a whole lot of interesting stuff here. I was talking about this movie for weeks after seeing it, and am still reminded of it often. So it really stuck with me, and I value that, no matter how annoying it is. It's also very well executed- for example, the twist is much more pivotal and much better done than that in the Sixth Sense. Not too far away from my list.

I see. I understand why it might sound like that, but I used the words to me in the first sentence of my post, and then I also used I don't think in the next sentence. Which should suggest that I was expressing my opinion only.

Fight Club is overflowing with ideas. Many, maybe most, of them are stupid. The philosophy is retarded and obnoxious.
What philosophy? I didn't really see Fight Club as having a philosophy of its own as much as it was satirising other philosophies - consumerism, support groups, the idea of masculinity as being inherently about violence*, Tyler Durden's brand of anarchism and the stupidity of giving yourself over to anarchism just because you are dissatisfied with what you've got.
Everyone in this movie is deluded to an extent, not just the main character(s). Perhaps that's the movie's philosophy, if there is one at all.
(*This one's problematic, I suppose, because while it's certainly poking fun at the men who join fight club, the movie itself does glamourise violence to an extent.)
I can see that some people might have a problem with the violence in the film. But not people who voted for Goodfellas or Pulp Fiction, where it's just as present.

Compare that with 3rd place Fight Club's 378 points on 23 lists. The film that was on the third highest number of lists was Seven at 28 lists in total. The film that was third in 1st place votes was The Shawshank Redemption with four 1st place votes - but compare that with the fact that it was on only 18 lists, those four 1st place votes were vital to its point total.

And here's the excel file for anyone that wants it. Keep in mind that the Master List row numbers don't match with the actual ranking because of the used lines at the top. Also, the Master List isn't in what would be considered an official rank because if the point totals are even it reverts to alphabetical instead of total number of lists and then highest ranking, but it's close enough for those films that came in 101-last place. The Top 100 sheet is proper in ranking.

Last of the Mohicans didn't even make it:mad:. Who is voting for **** like Tremors as part of their best 25 films of the 90's?
That would be me! :p That and Die Hard with a Vengeance.

Pulp Fiction (MY LIST: 19) was a fine, fun, imaginative showcase for a once exciting talent. Like Tarantino's debut, it felt fresh, and this time came loaded with colourful, memorable performances.

I didn't like Sonatine as much the first time I watched it. Perhaps it was my mood at the time but on the rewatch I was basically kicking myself for the rating I initially gave it.
Guap: I watched Only Yesterday a couple months ago, good film. I don't think it's great since it never really tries to be a great film, if you know what I mean, but it was still good and I was glad to have watched it.

This is my favourite political commentary:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/31/The_SpongeBob_SquarePants_Movie_poster.jpg/220px-The_SpongeBob_SquarePants_Movie_poster.jpg
I've not seen it, but even though I don't like SpongeBob, it's probably still funnier than Dr. Strangelove.
What philosophy? I didn't really see Fight Club as having a philosophy of its own as much as it was satirising other philosophies...
I'm with you on this. I think Fight Club has a philosophy in the same way that Star Wars has a religion. Others have taken it and spun out their own thing, but it's not expressed in the film.
Number two actually.
I'm sure Satantango is number two. :D That's right. A childish poo joke.
A fitting end to this travesty of a list.
That's good to know. :p
01 Alien 3
Alien 3 was your #1 choice? Wow. I mean, I quite like Alien 3, it's my favourite of a series of films I don't give a **** about, but seriously. BTW, how much did you win? :p
24. The Ice Storm (#363)
Now, that is a shame. The Ice Storm is a really good film and deserves to be much higher on the overall list.
So Goodfellas won! YAY! Very pleased to see that. You've all done very well.
Here's how the top 25 should've looked.
1. The Straight Story
2. Goodfellas

I'd rather do an All-Time 100, but I've said that before. However an 80s list would be even more interesting than either of the last two decades.
Thanks for all the work on this Harry.

Guap: I watched Only Yesterday a couple months ago, good film. I don't think it's great since it never really tries to be a great film, if you know what I mean, but it was still good and I was glad to have watched it.
That comment really hit a nerve on you that time. Given that you love Fargo.

Retaliate? You shouldn't take things so seriously. It's just an opportunity for me to make a joke. Sure I thought it was an absurd comment, but in the end if you think that what does it matter to me? It's like an inside joke, Guap, this last time was meant as a friendly gesture.

Goodfellas (MY LIST: 1) is by far the best film of the 90s. In fact, one could make a case for it as the best film of the last 50 years, not something that could seriously be said about any other film from the decade. It is an unbelievably intoxicating rush. Take the breahtaking whole apart and you see brilliant scene after genius scene, a movie where every moment is a classic in its own right.
