View Full Version : The MoFo Top 100 of the Nineties Countdown

I watched Close-up last night. Good movie. Very unique blend of fiction and documentary- though I think it ultimately has more in common with the latter. I have to admit it lost my attention at times but I did enjoy its intensely realistic, gritty style and the points it made about the relationship between movies and identity. 3.5
Surprised to see Fallen Angels on here seeing as In the Mood For Love missed the cut on the Millenium List. I suppose this means Chungking Express is still on the way.

I've scanned through the last couple of pages of posts of the usual nonsense, but I don't recall seeing anyone say why they love JFK. Somebody must have voted for it, tell us why (or feel free to link me to it, if you have).
I had JFK at #7. I adore this film. Why? Well, firstly I quickly become completely involved with the characters, and there's so many that we're rapidly introduced to. I find that there isn't a single plot thread that I dislike or am ambivalent to.
Secondly, at the time, I was quite interested in the JFK assassination. Therefore, all the (many) theories put forward in the film were of interest to me, regardless of whether I thought them accurate or not.
Thirdly, and as with many films I truly love, I really enjoy watching it. The 3 hours literally fly by, to the point where I couldn't wait to see the directors cut. An extra 17 minutes of one of my favourite films?!?! Oh yes. :yup:
The performances are uniformly good and the chemistry between the members of this ensemble cast is great, as together they make discoveries and connections, each opening their eyes a little more, while making them challenge what they think they know and the institutions they once had complete faith and trust in.
Lastly, again with the cast, there's some great cameos. Particularly from Ed Asner, Jack Lemmon and John Candy early on. While Donald Sutherland's mysterious Mr.X plays a pivotal role and is my favourite scene in the entire film.

It's not really, there's still a big percentage of members who posted there millenium list still here.
Yes, a lot of the people are the same, but it's still not the same group of people. Also more people participated in this countdown than in the Millennium one. Bigger sample size = greater variety.
Yeah, and those differences, however slight, are going to be amplified at the bottom of the list.

it's one of those films for me which was just interesting to watch.I'm not a fan of conspiracies,I'm not a huge fan of Costner and Oliver Stone yet I still enjoyed it because it managed to involve me into the story.Probably you have to like this type of films.

No I agreed that this list is strange. This list doesn't feel like it's from the same members who came up with the millenium top 100. I mean The Dark Knight placed 3rd in the Millenium top 100, yet Batman Returns only places in the 90's on this list???? It's the best Batman movie ever.
Look at the IMDB ratings of both films:
Dark Knight: 9.0 (percentile: 99.95%, ranked 1st out of 2,700 action films)
Batman Returns: 7.0 (percentile: 75%, ranked 600th out of 2,700 action films) (http://www.imdb.com/search/title?at=0&genres=action&num_votes=1000,&sort=user_rating,desc&start=551&title_type=feature)
While I personally think that both movies are about equally good (because I think that the Dark Knight is overrated).

JFK
Oliver Stone and I have a love hate relationship. For example, I hate Natural Born Killers & Alexander, but I love Scarface & Any Given Sunday. Throw JFK in the love pile. I think everyone was on their A game and the conspiracy 'feel' the film gives off fits perfectly with the history.

Happiness is a good film if you're a fan of dark humor. The film really goes far in its sickness in a very light and dry way. I found myself laughing out loud at the twisted scenes, while being disturbed at the same time.
It's pretty effective in that sense.
Its message is still a little vague to me and may be overshadowed by the disturbance of the film. The many reviews I read about the film didn't satisfy me enough in terms of its concrete subject.
It's obviously about unhappy people looking for happiness or some sort of satisfcation in very odd and deranged ways, but I don't get the statement Solondz is making. Maybe he just wanted to observe.
Anyway, it's a funny film and I enjoyed it a lot to a certain level.
I haven't seen or heard of A Brighter Summer Day, but it seems like an interesting film. It's probably not something for the near future, though, as my soon-to-watchlist is momentarily filled with Wong Kar Wai films and many others.
Looking forward to the next pair tomorrow!

I have seen Happiness and I didn't find it shocking, therefore based on its style I didn't find it particularly funny. Haven't heard of A Brighter Summer Day

Con Air in 100th place only made 42 points... if there were fewer people sent in lists, it would probably have been between 30 and 40 points to make the cut... which is pretty much one high vote and one low(ish) vote.
Placing in 60th-100th place doesn't take much really.
Edit: Example, The Fifth Element garnered 52 points altogether... making 86th place... 20 of those points were from me.

Well, there are people here who have watched a large number of obscure movies. Movies like these can have a powerful impact on people so if several have watched them it is likely that they will put these movies on their top 25 and very high too. It takes at least 2 or 3 people to make into the list.
Movies like Independence Day, for instance, will probably show up lower in top 25's, at 23rd or 24th place on the list, not accumulating many points.

Me too. That's good because I don't know 100 great 1990's movies so I would expect that a top 100 of the 1990's would have a ton of movies I didn't watch. Most movies I did watch that showed up were rather unimpressive such as Con Air, Speed, Beauty and the Beast, Batman Returns, The Fifth Element, etc.

Calm down, I can assure you there was no collusion to get A Brighter Summer Day on the list. I know who voted for it and we didn't conspire, we actually really like the film because it's amazing. Here's a movie that has benefited from the internet and file sharing. The opportunity to see the film is now available to all and one can see the impact in its steady climb up the They Shoot Pictures Don't They list. It's at maybe 160 now, was in the 400's last year. It also had a theatrical release last year, although that was likely restricted to major cities like LA and New York.

Haven't seen (or heard of) the first film of the new two, but Happiness is an absolute 5 classic for me. Dylan Baker is terrific in a completely creepy, depraved way, as is Phillip Seymour Hoffman. The film is darkly hilarious and yet also severely disgusting all at the same time. Brilliant.

Two good films that did not make my list, but I'm very happy to see on here. I think both deserve to be higher and I thought they would be. Starship Troopers is pure cult/action/comedy fun. Life Is Beautiful walked on a very fine line in adding humor to a holocaust film, and did it well, even though I think it took away from the drama. Also I watched Fallen Angels and it's a decent film, I liked the mute character.

A surprise to see this make the list, but then I remember the number of people who really love this flick and I suppose it makes sense. It's a fun film and has everything you would expect from a Verhoeven film: violence, sex, satirical comedy.

Using this thread to shamelessly plug and link to one of your reviews? Disgusting! You'd never find me doing such a thing! :p

Zero from my list!
same here :(
I think I've only had two so far. Yet somehow, I've managed not to be flabbergasted or indignant. Weird!
Didn't like Donnie Brasco all that much, gave it a 2 on movie tab I think. The other film I haven't seen. I have much watching ahead :p

Hmm, Almodovar... starting to worry I'll like the first 50 more than the second 50.
Had no idea enough people liked Donnie Brasco that much. Not sure why either.

Finally i had All About My Mother at 25 but dammit my point counted
I love Donnie Brasco and i had a long debate with someone on this site that was partly about the true story of Donnie Brasco.
Two great picks that i love, finally :);)
