Guapo is right, it is. I am beginning to get a little worried about it now though I will be honest. I didn't have it at the top of my list, like #8, I think Cobpyth put it top #5, but apart from that I am not so sure who included it, can someone ease my concerns please and tell me you had it pretty high? :p

Edit: Actually, surely Cricket had it in his top 5, so yeh it must be coming up soon.

I had it at #2 actually, because I really wanted it to make it. In reality it's probably my #5 favorite of the '90s, though.

Also, welcome Claire. ;)

40. Man Bites Dog- Not seen yet
39. Naked- I love some Mike Leigh movies- there was one in both my Millennium and 90s lists- but I dislike this one. All I get out of this movie is how much of an annoying tool Thewlis' character is.
38. The Truman Show- OK movie. I often felt like I was secretly in some TV show growing up, so I hoped this would be better.
37. Miller's Crossing- Another of the few Coen brothers films I don't much care for.
36. Casino- On its own it's quite a good movie. There are some moments of Scorsese stardust. Set against Goodfellas though- and it has to be compared because so much of it is carried over from its predecessor- it is a bloated, slow, cheap knockoff.
35. Dead Man- Pretty interesting.
34. Jurassic Park- A great setup for a film and has its share of iconic scenes.
33. Trainspotting- Loads of good stuff messily spilling all over the place in this, grotesque scum life and fantastic music.
32. Braveheart- A slightly more heroic view of Scotland, and a fine, stirring action movie.
31. Chungking Express- Empty calorie recycled sugar-rush nothingness.

The Usual Suspects is the 7th film from my list; I had it at #6. I know there are a few who don't like it; I've heard complaints that the movie cheats with the ending, making the whole narration of the film a lie. I don't look that deeply into it. I just see a very entertaining movie from start to finish with a great cast. All of the actors get a chance to make their characters stand out.

I love T2, just not as much as I once did. I still think it's an exceptional action film but something is missing for me, and it did not get my vote. I'm a little surprised it's not higher.

08-20-13, 10:36 PM
30. American History X- Very poor issue movie that botches its message.
29. Toy Story- 'I'm Woody! Howdy howdy howdy!' Lovely in itself, and also valuable for establishing characters for sequels that are much better still.
28. The Thin Red Line- Not worth the wait.
27. Good Will Hunting- Horribly stupid and smug garbage.
26. Being John Malkovich- Some touches of genius.
25. Groundhog Day- Perfectly formed.
24. American Beauty- It isn't that bad or that good.
23. Leon: The Professional- Weak, silly and gimmicky.
22. Princess Mononoke- MY LIST: 3- One of the greatest of action movies. So much inspiration.
21. Heat- Routine and rather dull cop drama saved from anonymity by the casting.

Daniel M

The Usual Suspects 3.5
Terminator 2: Judgment Day 4

Two great films, although neither made my list. The first used to be a real favourite of mine but admittedly I think less of it now, but there's a lot to still love about it like Spacey's performance. Terminator 2 I haven't seen in ages, but I absolutely loved it growing up, I rate it similar to the first movie, but I think I liked this one more due to the awesome mercury villain.

And from the 18 remaining, the only one I won't have seen is Eyes Wide Shut, which I keep saying I will rectify soon, maybe I will :p

20. The Usual Suspects - 4.5- (MY LIST)
19. Terminator 2: Judgment Day - 3.5

The Usual Suspects is an old favorite and I still think it has some very awesome moments, but I don't love it as much as I used to. It was still more than good enough to make my list.

I never was a real big fan of the Terminator series, but I also didn't hate them or anything like that. This sequel was better than the first in terms of special effects, but I still liked the first one a little bit more, because it was rawer and because Arnold was freaking cool in that one, instead of becoming a young boy's robot friend. Still a classic that deserves to be on here.

The Usual Suspects was #12 on my list. That makes 13 now and I still think there might be four more from my list. You can see why I like the 90's so much more than the Noughties.

The Usual Suspects is the 7th film from my list; I had it at #6. For me, this is one of the most impressive things about the film. It does do that, but it charms me so and does so in such an engrossing and entertaining way, that I don't care and the reason I don't care is that I don't feel cheated. It felt like part of the story, rather than the reason for it.

I think I've made my feelings on T2 pretty clear a number of times. I like it until I don't and I don't because it goes on too long.

Yeh, without the ending the film doesn't really make sense or serve a purpose, it has to be there for everything you see to really make sense, kind of like Fight Club too which I don't understand complaints about.

I never make my list thinking the titles will make it. I'm not in a competition. I do want my choices to be loved, but I know many aren't that well-seen. I'll admit that sometimes I pick a lesser-known movie over a more popular one, but at least I think it's equally as good. However, I did forget some titles this time too (perhaps I didn't take the list seriously enough). Anyhow, just some babbling.

I'm surprised Satantango hasn't made the list, because I would have thought those that have seen it would have placed it extremely high on there lists. Sure, but let's say two or three people put it on their list as the first position. Now let's take a more known movie, let's say 30 people placed it on tenth position. It makes more points then and remember that over 50 lists were sent. Even I didn't have Satantango as my first movie.

Didn't the first movie, at #100 have 47 points? For that movie (Con Air, haha) 23 of those were mine, as I deliberately placed the film there to give it a good chance as I knew other choices that would have been in the top 5 would have got on without my points.

So that means if two people placed Satantango at #2 it would have made the list, so I'm surprised a few members, like you, who have seen it, say 3/4 haven't managed to get it on, even at a low place.

Anyway Mr Minio, I have Werckmeister Harmonies and Satantango both available to watch, I'll watch the former first, as it's shorter, but when I get the chance to watch the latter I definitely will.

No, I meant the film that was in #100 I gave it 23 points and it only had 47 overall so it would only take a few lists to get a film in :) Hence I am surprised Satantango didn't get in even at a low position.

I'm quite surprised it won't make the list at all.

It's a formidable film to be certain. Hell of a job by Washington in it.

Awesome set! Saving private Ryan is my second all time favorite war film, and one of Spielbergs greatest. Had it at number 6 on my list, making it the second highest from my list to make it. Forrest Gump is an enjoyable film, in dramatic an humorous aspects. I was laughing a lot, and it always entertaining. Didn't make my list though

Forrest Gump is the 8th movie from my list; I had it at #11. The way I feel about it is really kind of corny; it makes me feel how I felt as a kid watching The Wizard of Oz or E. T. It's a magical film for me and I love it in so many ways. I look at it as a very one of a kind movie. I think it's much better than movies I rate higher; it's just not the type of film I can watch over and over anymore. And I still feel that it deserved the best picture Oscar.

Saving Private Ryan is a very impressive film; I just didn't like it that much for whatever reason.

Surprised at people who are surprised these two aren't higher. They're about where I expected them to be.

Forrest Gump is a movie I used to love and still have a bit of a soft spot for, but it didn't come close to making my list. Saving Private Ryan was better than I thought it would be, but I didn't love it.

Heat is nothing special. The Usual Suspects is decent but I've never quite understood why people are so impressed with Spacey's acting in this, I wonder if some of them are confused because his character is giving a performance? I don't know. Terminator 2 is cheesy and not as good as the first film.

Some from earlier in the list that I've now seen:

A Brighter Summer Day - man this is long. The main character is a bit of a blank, which was a problem. I was also confused about who everyone was and how they related to each other and which gangs they were in. The whole section with the concert when Honey comes back was really powerful, and the later gang attack. I'm dubious about the quality of the subtitles on the version I watched so maybe there's a lot I missed. I probably need to watch it again to fully understand or appreciate it. But that can wait until I get another spare 4 hours.

Whisper of the Heart - this was cheesier than I expected. I misplaced my dvd so I had to watch a dubbed version I recorded off the tv and I don't think that helped. It might have more appeal for teens, I suppose. I think I prefer Only Yesterday.

Donnie Brasco - pretty good. I liked this a lot better than Heat, which placed higher. It seemed to lack subtlety, though, especially in the music.

Heat - 3 - nice and entertaining movie - liked the DeNiro & Pacino duet

Terminator 2 - 3 - badass Arnie
Saving Private Ryan - 3.5 - the best from this set; Omaha beach landing was really horrific and poignant, but after that it never reaches the greatness of these scenes; very good blockbuster
Forrest Gump - 3.5 - sh*t happens

No, without the ending the whole film doesn't really make much sense or doesn't work, how would you have rather it end? It frustrates me when people complain about things like that.

For me, this is one of the most impressive things about the film. It does do that, but it charms me so and does so in such an engrossing and entertaining way, that I don't care and the reason I don't care is that I don't feel cheated. It felt like part of the story, rather than the reason for it.

Yeh, without the ending the film doesn't really make sense or serve a purpose, it has to be there for everything you see to really make sense, kind of like Fight Club too which I don't understand complaints about.

The Usual Suspects is brilliant, and the device of the unreliable narrator is a narrative tool that has been used in countless works of art in the past. I'm not sure why anyone would feel as if it doesn't work. But then, everything is opinion.

I've said before that The Usual Suspects is an OK movie (3). I saw it at the theatre not knowing the ending beforehand. Then a few minutes in when "the guy" whispers to the Byrne character, I recognized the voice, so it held my interest, but I thought the "mystery" was obvious. I also thought that Spacey was far better in SE7EN

I thought The Usual Suspects was going to make it into the top 10, at least it was top 20. I had it at 4, it's one of the few films i think stays great after you know the twist. Which i think has alot to do with Kevin Spacey and Chazz Palminteri's performances.

I also had Forrest Gump at 10. I think Gump is a film that some people adore and some hate, i personally see it as just a fun film that's never dull. One of my favourite things about the films is the evolution of Gump's relationship with Lieutenant, and of course the many events depicted from the 20th century.

T2 is my favourite of the Terminator series. 7 or 8 years ago it would've been in my top 5, but it's one of those films that i've seen too many times now. I only watched SPR for the first time about 3 years ago. I liked it well enough but didn't have the same response as most of my friends who were crazy about it.

I didn't see Eyes Wide Shut in time, but it would be 17th if I made the list right now, and it would've been around 11th at the time.

I've seen parts of Silence of the Lamb. I liked what I saw.

Two awesome films that deserve the spot on the list. Silence of the Lambs is probably my favorite horror film (yes I know HK, it's not horror :p) except maybe Eraserhead. I had it at #2 on my list, I love every aspect of it. Eyes Wide Shut has a lot of buzz here, it's in my five outsiders, and if it wasn't for the ending it would've probably made my list. One of the movies of that length I wish was longer

Two awesome movies!

16. The Silence of the Lambs - 4(+)
15. Eyes Wide Shut - 4.5 (MY LIST)

Silence of the Lambs is a great thriller with two awesome performances from Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster! The scenes between Clarice and Hannibal are the best thing about the film for me. The murder complot is a little less compelling in my opinion, but it was still interesting enough. Very good film!

Eyes Wide Shut has a few perfect film moments in my opinion. It's such a stunningly well directed film! The music and the visionary directing create one of the most intriguing atmospheres I've ever seen on film. Kubrick was a truly brilliant filmmaker and he proved it again with his last picture. It also made my list!

The Silence of the Lambs is the 9th movie from my list; I had it at #18.

I liked Eyes Wide Shut a good amount. But I don't believe for one second it would get this much love if had been made by a lesser known director.

Best set yet! Unfortunately the rest of the list is all downhill from here :D

The Silence of the Lambs is a great film, it either squeezed into my top ten or was just outside of it, can't remember. But it's a fantastic thriller and Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter is rightfully hailed as perhaps the greatest of all movie villains.

Eyes Wide Shut is a film I've been talking about a lot here, and I am so, so pleasantly surprised to see it crack the top fifteen. It's an amazing movie and absolutely one of Kubrick's finest; a dreamlike masterpiece and probably the best film I've ever seen about jealousy and the impact it can have on relationships. #4 on my list.

Out of curiosity, Donnie, what didn't you like about the ending of Eyes Wide Shut?

It felt like an abrupt ending which didn't conclude the film. While Nicole Kidman saying

I see the ending as hopeful - an affirmation that despite everything they've gone through, Bill and Alice can still reconcile their relationship regardless of the jealousy. But yeah I totally agree on wanting the movie to go on even longer - Kubrick created a web of mystery and intrigue that I didn't want to walk away from.

While I've not seen it (and haven't really felt any desire to do so) I've got to say I'm rather flabbergasted at just how high Eyes Wide Shut has landed. Would never have predicted such a high placing, especially taking into account some of the films that aren't going to make it at all. I'd have said it was more likely to miss the list all together than land in the top 15.

The set before that however was fantastic. Two 5-star films for me (Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump) and both on my list, #11 and #12 respectively. That makes 12 from my list so far, and I expect to finish with 16.

The real question is, Would Eyes Wide Shut have climbed so high if it wasn't a Kubrick film? I think people have voted it high because it's made by arguably the greatest Director. Stanley Kubrick is great therefore his film must be great and that why I voted it so high. It is good and very surreal but probably one of his weakest films, definitely not top 15 MoFo 90's good.

Silence of the Lambs, I'm actually surprised it isn't higher, although similar to the above if it wasn't for Hopkins legendary, and I do mean legendary turn as Hannibal Lector the film perhaps would not be held in such high regard.

I disagree. I think the only argument that can be made is that the reason people watch it is because Kubrick made it. But I don't think the reason it is so high is because it was made by a great director. If that was the case, then where are the Kurosawa movies from the 90s, for example?

And personally, Eyes Wide Shut is my 2nd favorite Kubrick film. And I know many other mofos have similar feelings for the film.

I personally think it is among Kubrick's best, but Kubrick is a different type of director entirely because his films are so varied.

Well I've not seen Weekend at Bernie's II either, but if that had appeared at number 15 I'd have been astonished!

The reason I was surprised is the opinion of many people over the years, including many Kubrick lovers, didn't appear to be massively positive so I didn't think there would be enough love to generate such a high placing. Especially when films which to me appeared to be much more loved in general (Lion King, Forrest Gump, Terminator 2, Toy Story, Leon etc) appeared beforehand

I haven't seen EWS in a long time so I can't really criticize in detail, but I was kind of ambivalent toward it. In many ways I thought it was indeed brilliant, yet I was also still sort of disappointed afterward...

I don't see it being voted for simply because it's Kubrick, though. Kubrick was a master of every genre he touched and EWS is no exception. I admired the psychodrama and atmosphere, but as I recall it was also a bit vague and ponderous.

Well, Eyes Wide Shut has always been an incredibly polarizing movies, so at times it won't seem very popular when you're around the many haters it has, but in a list like this that doesn't take into account the amount of negative reviews a movie gets, it seems to get overwhelmingly positive reception.

Fargo is possibly my favorite Coen film. It's so perfect. The direction, the script, the acting, it's all so 'complete'. Everything in this film works so very very well. This is most certainly one of the best films of the '90s and naturally, it made my list.

Boogie Nights is just AWESOME! It was second on my list, although it's probably my 5th favorite '90s movie in retrospect.
PTA did something very special here as he clearly uses certain vibes of a few older directors in this film (most notably Martin Scorsese) and somehow succeeds to form all the influences into something highly original and HUGELY entertaining! This was the film that made me realize what a freaking genius Paul Thomas Anderson actually is.

Two brilliant movies and definitely two of my very favourite from the 90s, both were on my list and would both be in my top 50 (maybe 25) of all time.

I haven't said much about Fargo on here but it's a fantastic movie that is great for so many reasons, I haven't seen it in a while and it's definitely due a re watch but there is so much to love about it, it has a great dark comedy atmosphere and great performances, I love McDormand and Buscemi but the other performances are great too.

Here's why Boogie Nights is one of my favourite films of all time, delighted to see it so high up:

1 - Boogie Nights (Paul Thomas Anderson, 1997)

When I actually sit down and look at Pulp Fiction and Boogie Nights it becomes apparent why I love the two films so much. Both are films from my two favourite directors who have affected me both, directors whose whole body of work I love and these are films I consider their personal 'masterpieces' (I would say Inglourious Basterds and There Will Be Blood are the directors' two masterpieces of the 21st century that may prove equal or not better than these two films in the future), both are them are actually the directors' second feature films, both of them are quite long films at two and a half hours each, but at no time full long, they are films bursting with energy, with each viewing I am constantly attached to the screen for the full film. Then there's the casts involved, both films have two fantastic casts with many great performances, with actors at the very top of their game. Both films feel alive through great dialogue and fantastic use of music, in Pulp Fiction it feels like the characters are hanging out and having a good time, in a strange kind of way, and in Boogie Nights this is even more so, I recall the pool scene near the start of the film where Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg) first meets Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly).

As touched on in the previous paragraph, Boogie Nights boasts possibly the greatest ensemble cast in a film, at least for me. The film has many of the actors best ever performances, and those who have arguably had better, have often been in another Paul Thomas Anderson film (Julianne Moore and Philip Seymour Hoffman, for example).

Mark Wahlberg is not everyone's cup of tea, but is great in this film as a young man who discovers he has a talent that gives him the path to a great career in the porn industry. When introduced to the porn industry he is introduced to many new faces, characters including John C. Reilly, Don Cheadle, William H. Macy, Luis Guzman, Julianne Moore and Burt Reynolds. Moore and Reynolds possibly give the film's best two performances, Reynolds is fantastic as the calm businessman who we see attempt to survive in a changing industry in the 1970s and 1980s, and Moore is fantastic as a mother like character who immediately takes a special likening towards Mark Wahlberg's character.

Magnolia is often cited as Paul Thomas Anderson's best film, and I can definitely see why, only two years after Boogie Nights he would go on to create a film extremely similar to it. Many people love that film because of the deep human meaning to it, it focusses on a large ensemble cast who play a variety of characters, each broken and struggling in life in different ways, however Boogie Nights does exactly the same. People may be put off the film as it is about porn, but this setting is simply used to develop these characters, each of them wants to have something greater in life, they all want to be stars, but really all of them have great problems that often have great consequences. In the film we see these characters ignore the consequences and the harsh reality of their lives, the enjoy their lives, up until a certain point where it begins to get messy, at times the film feels upbeat, vivid, full of energy, at other times a more pessimistic and darker look at life.

Paul Thomas Anderson's directorial style is key to us enjoying this journey, and one hell of a journey it is. There's a number of fantastic shots within this film, individual scenes feel like 'masterpieces', I could watch this film and I find something new to admire each time. This is a film you could analyse and break down, Anderson's craft is a joy to behold. There are many glorious long takes (also in Magnolia) that fit in with the huge ensemble cast, we are looking at different people and different lives, and within scenes we see the camera seemingly move freely from one person to the next, once again I refer you to the pool scene near the beginning of the film.

In terms of technique Paul Thomas Anderson is often compared to Martin Scorsese, and I think this film is very similar to one of Scorsese's best films, Goodfellas, in many ways. Both are long films that don't feel like such, both feel alive, feel of energy, feature great casts. But most importantly, both take us other fairly long time periods looking at the lives of different people who belong to a 'business' that a lot of people frown upon. Both directors' know how to keep us watching the film, they feel confident in their technique and use this to take us through different time periods to swiftly. Both make fantastic use of music to do so as well, I would say that Boogie Nights and Goodfellas feature my two favourite ever soundtracks, they make us feel like we are their, living in the era shown, enjoying ourselves and having a great time.

So there it is, the end of my review, I don't think I can say much more about why I love this film, and hope you have enjoyed reading my top films list. It may have taken a while with my on/off activity recently, but I just hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have and that the wait was worth it. Hopefully over the course of this thread you have had an enjoyable insight in to how much I have enjoyed watching films so far this year, since starting this list (which I had decided, in a word file) I have seen many great films that would have easily made it in to high positions, which I don't think is a bad thing, I want to keep watching great films, and can't wait until I've watched even more, compile different lists and look at my changing views of films.

Fargo... excellent...

Marky Mark... Glad it didn't break the Top 10 at least.

Have you actually seen Boogie Nights? I think I remember once you voted against it in a tournament in favour of Andrei Rublev or something because of Mark Wahlberg yet you hadn't seen it.

If you have seen it then fair enough, but it seems like you just dislike it because your general dislike of Mark Wahlberg, not only is the film great, but for me he captures the role perfectly.
