Movies that cause arguments/get you talking.

I wasn't really "around" when it came out, so I don't know, but I do know that it's frequently analyzed or referenced in the academic world. It's a wonderful film in that its components can be twisted around to fit just about any conception of reality ever developed; from Plato's Allegory of the Cave to an allegory of the Lacanian Real.
You can ascribe that stuff to it, but it's clear (and has been confirmed by the directors) that it (The Matrix) is meant to represent The Black Prison from Gnostic teachings, the time trap we are all allegedly subsumed in for eternity. The stuff that went into Neo you mention is the gnostic message directly from God.

Although I haven't read a ton about the concept, I have read some of Phil K Dick's writings on the subject, and I do find the stuff fascinating.

Welcome to the human race...
There's a handful I can think of where my opinion is so radically different (usually in a negative way) from other people's that it can't help but start an argument to some extent - I think the biggest offender in this regard is Ratatouille. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person on this site who considers it an extreme disappointment on Pixar's behalf.

Honourable mentions go to Knocked Up and Juno.

What about the end did you fight about? I'm curious
I was a difference of opinion. I looked at it logically that she was escaping the world around her in the "fantasy" that she created in her own head. She thought it was this grand fantasy that everything was happening. I tried to explain it to her and she started yelling over me that she was right and I was wrong. Needless to say, a grand fight started over Pan's Labyrinth.

Everytime I comment on a film in this forum, it seems to cause an argument! Must be my bedside manner.

You're not the only one, I thought it was a disappointment too. I'd been dubious about the idea of a film heavily featuring rats in a kitchen (slight fear of rats), but since I was assured by many people that it was brilliant I watched it anyway and was distinctly underwhelmed. I don't see that it has all that much appeal for kids, either.

I've not seen Knocked Up but I had big problems with Juno as well.

I think differences of opinion are probably the biggest factor in how much discussion you have on a film. I remember having discussions with Mr Next on films I liked and he didn't, or he liked and I didn't. Although there's some satisfaction in pulling apart a film you both/all disliked, it generally fizzles out in agreement. Although mostly thanks to this thread I did decide to make an effort to discuss the film we watched the other night (A Single Man) in more detail, although we both liked it and could have just left it at 'that was good' 'yeah it was'.

My brother saw Ratatouille & he told me "it's one of Disney's best.."
His main reason for loving the film is that it follows Classic Disney animation traits..

I saw the movie a year later & what a disappointment!!!..
But I do agree it does seem like one of those Classic Disney animated movies.

Wall-E on the other hand was something else.. I have high regard for Wall-E & Up...

The controversial Zeitgeist has got me and others talking for hours.

Exactly. Because the world around her is changing due to fascism, she creates her own fantasy and finds an escape. Whether it's real or not, the main point is her escape from the political reality. You can't ignore the politics.

The author is dead, haven't you heard?

Very cool to hear that it comes from some actual mythos, though I know zero about that stuff and will have to take the directors at their word, but you'd be surprised at how well it gets hammered into some other frameworks. It's just got "one of those faces", so to speak!
