Watching the MST3K episode Teenage Crime Wave. This... is actually kind of an OK movie. I found myself thrilled a couple times and I'm not halfway through yet.

Key and Peele delivering the goods as usual. Still, it raises the question of black authenticity, and specifically masculinity in the context of a sort of imaginary perfection (e.g., of power, seduction, style). The skit deflates the gothic vampire mythos with a pedestrian mythos of black masculinity. Eddie Murphy had a similar bit about why you never see black people in horror movies (the black family, we are told, leaves when they hear an evil voice say "Get Out"). Other comics have deflated horror with comments about black people having enough sense not to get lost in the woods, etc. Thus we have a sort of folk wisdom (embodied in a racial point of view) poking fun at the "awe" of vampires and demons and such.
Just as Tolkien felt the need to give England an epic mythology in LoTR, Jordan Peele has been attempting to offer a black POV in horror in his films. I think the results are mixed, but it's nice to see someone trying to exceed the bar of Blacula and Tales from the Hood.
