That really might be what he was looking for, the only one mentioned here that would really qualify would be Splice.

Pirates! Band of Misfits.

I'm so clueless I had no idea that any of the characters mentioned in this thread were biologists.

Pirates has Darwin in it. Well he is not a biologist in a true sense. But close enough!

Adaptation had this guy crazy about orchidees.
