What's with Tim Burton? In the last few month he has announced he's doing Dark Shadows, Abraham Lincoln Meets Dracula, The Addams Family, and now this. And I'm not keeping tabs on him, so there might be others.

Burton really needs to try something different. There's a fine line between "good stylistic fit" and "utterly predictable." I bemoan how he's gone from someone fresh and unique to someone stale and relatively one-note. Then again, Planet of the Apes was such a disaster that it might have turned him off branching out much.

I am burdened with glorious purpose
Hmmmm Dark Shadows seems like fun to me, but the others sound like Burton is running around without any real focus. I have nothing to go on, but my feeling is like he's just out to make a buck and is being lazy. His earlier films had great stories; he seems to have given up on that. It's so sad!

And really, we don't need another Adams Family! My god, let it be.

I liked Sweeney Todd and enjoyed Alice, but I'm still waiting for him to announce something fresh, like Yoda said.

He needs to stop making movies. Period. Exclamation point!

What is this? I don't care to see Helena Bonham Carter sleeping until Johnny Depp awakens her with a kiss. BORRRRRRING! Angelina Jolie as Maleficent sounds cool -- will Angelina and Helena be fighting for Tim's attention after this? CATFIGHT ON THE TIM BURTON SET!

Tim Burton to Direct Maleficent, Film Gets a Screenwriter

Back in January it was rumored that Tim Burton was interested in directing another classic live-action/CG Disney film based on the story of Sleeping Beauty called Maleficent. It looks like that director Tim Burton just may be doing so.

The film takes the classic story of Sleeping beauty but puts a focus on the the villainous character. The whole story will be her point of view. Maleficent is definitely one of the most evil villains from Disney. I imagine the film will explore her deep hatred for the people of the Kingdom in which Princess Aurora lived, and what caused that hatred.

THR has confirmed that Burton is definitely interested in making this feature film, and Disney has hired a screenwriter to write it. Linda Woolverton will pen the screenplay, this is the same person that wrote Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King.

So this film could end up reuniting Burton and Woolverton. This is not a done deal for Burton yet, as you know he's got a few other projects on the table such as Frankenweenie, The Addams Family and Dark Shadows.

Burton was supposed to direct Dark Shadows next with Johnny Depp, but apparently that movie is going through a rough road right now. These problems may be due to the fact that Pirates 4 is going to shoot soon cutting into Dark Shadows' shooting schedule meaning no Johnny Depp. The Dark Shadows film may end up getting delayed while Depp shoots Pirates, leaving Burton open to direct another film, possibly Maleficent. We'll just have to wait and see!

Okay, I was right. I missed one, Frankenweenie. Malificent sounds like a rip of Wicked.

Another live-action/CG fest? I understand the work and money necessary to build sets, but the payoff is always far more interesting. Just look at Where The Wild Things Are - a beautifully done live-action film with costumes.

Burton, like I said with Alice, seems incredibly uninspired. He simply lacks anything new to say, or to add to his films.

I haven't seen or read Wicked but exploring these evil characters too deeply doesn't sit well with me. I like my evil TO STAY EVIL. These things make you sympathize with them and suddenly they become fun, happy characters.

I can't imagine what Tim Burton would do if he unleashed a Wicked-like movie about Maleficent. I'm pretty sure Helena will fume about not being in the starring role, unless she steals it.

Is there any doubt that Johnny Depp will play the Mirror?

The Mirror? What mirror? Are you thinking about Snow White?

Tim Burton will probably add the mirror anyway.

Or maybe he'll play the bird.

I imagine Johnny Depp would play the prince.

That or he'll have dual roles as the three magical fairy women.

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. I think you can just call them fairies or faeries if you want to go all medieval.

I bet if I filmed myself stalking Jake Gyllenhaal, it would be better than anything Tim Burton's ever done. Hell, if I filmed myself stalking Johnny Depp, that would be better, too.

Jake Gyllenhaal would be gay for me!

I'd like to see Burton take on something wee bit more original too... but, and I know I'm in the minority here, this actually sounds a little more interesting to me than Alice did the first time I read about it... I've never been a huge fan of Disney's sugar-coated take on fairy tales... and I'm hoping this will have a much darker edge to it similar to Snow White: A Tale of Terror with Sigourney Weaver...
