Welcome to the human race...
^ I second that ^

And I recently saw this great 5-minute tracking shot in Serenity. In this era of fast-cuts, you just gotta love a long-lasting shot.

The one I can think of that I'm sure many others, especially anyone taking an Intro to Film Class, can agree with is the opening shot of Touch of Evil. It was amazingly done for its time and man is it intense. This is probably my favorite long take of all time, just above the entrance to the club in Goodfellas.

Another favorite of mine would have to be when Vincent Gallo enters the strip joint in Buffalo '66. The music he wrote for that scene is incredible and it couldn't be more glorious of a moment.

But my all time favorite shot would have to be of Ellie run up the stairs to get her father's medicine in Contact. I can't even explain the shot, it is too mind boggling. I even know it was done with a blue screen in the mirror, but I still don't even understand it. Just the act of being able to come up with a shot like that. Just to visualize it in your head. I think my brain would die.
i was about to say the club in goodfellas, all of scorsese's movies are full of great shots

have no fear, CPMan is here..
X2's opening scene where Nightcrawler teleports his blue arse inside the whitehouse, poofing here and there and almost everywhere..and kicking some whitehouse a$$ in the process..also, Tears of the Sun's ending scene, in where Bruce Willis and his remaining men spent their last bullets and a bunchload of hostile rebels pursuing them..and then there was this big field, a handful of GI's vs a bunchload of rebels fits the description that Bruce Willis' character and his remaining men will die..

and then, a couple of american fighter planes just bombed its way through the field killing all the rebels..a breathtaking scene IMO.

All time classics:

The Knight and Death on the beach in The Seventh Seal, Sydow's face is hidden in shadow, but Death's is fully illuminated as they begin their famous game of chess. Only Death is real.

The final frame of Sword of Doom, pure nihilism.

Mifune's death scene in Throne of Blood. Just awsome.

Mr. Chow and Mrs. Chan lock eyes at the entrance of the noodle shop as the rain pours down and the smoke curls out, the most sensual, erotic scene in film history, in the most powerfully erotic (yet demure) film ever made, In the Mood for Love.

Now that I'm finally able to take screenshots straight from a DVD on this computer I'll get some more!

I like the long frame held in Goodfellas when DeNiro and Liotta are at the diner... it's crazy.

When I think of this topic, I not only think of scenes, but I think of cinematic pictures that that stick in my head...these are some of my favorite cinematic pictures:

I love the shot in Cast Awaywhere Chuck is quietly floating on his raft in the ocean and then in the background you see a gigantic ship moving right beside him.

The shot in Goodfellas where the police open the back of the refrigerator truck and the camera slowly pans through the entire truck to find a body hanging on a hook covered in ice.

The final long shot of Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins finally reuniting in The Shawshank Redemption

Robert Duvall standing at his window and singing the song he used to sing to his daughter after lying to her about remembering the song in Tender Mercies

The scene in Ordinary People where Beth's parents are trying to take pictures and Beth is uncomfortable posing with Conrad...you can cut the tension in that scene with a knife.

There's a shot in Splash that is a close-up of Tom Hanks standing on the beach looking for the mermaid and way, way, way back in the background in the ocean, you see the mermaid's tail emerge briefly from the water and then disappear again.

Mel Gibson's son's kite floating up in the sky in Ransom

Ryan O'Neal sitting on the snow-covered steps in the park right after his wife's death at the beginning of Love Story

Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw falling out of the garbage truck in The Getaway

Faye Dunaway standing at the top of the stairs holding her newly adopted daughter in Mommie Dearest

JoBeth Williams feeling her daughter's spirit pass through her body in Poltergeist

The first time Regan's head turns 360 degrees in The Exorcist

City of angels -- when seth jumps of the building and his life flashes before him in black and white, most excellent
God, that movie rips my guts out...it might be time for a re-watch soon.

Watch Wings of Desire instead. So much better.

I love that shot in Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge when Kriemhild arrives and enters Attila's hall.

I completely love the glorious funeral mastershot from Soy Cuba:

Made by the same director Cranes are Flying has a lot of impressive shots too:

The shot with that kid walking in the tunnel in Le Révélateur is one of my favourites too.

And of course anything in movies of Tarr, Angelopoulos, Tarkovsky, Bergman... and hundreds more.

Off the top of my head

The Shining:

Pretty much every steadicam shot, as well as the final shot

Mulholland Drive:

Nearly every shot, but especially these two

Taxi Driver:

My favorite shot from the film (but there are so many to choose from), because of the meaning behind it. Scorsese himself considers this the most important shot in the film, and I can't say I disagree

8 1/2:

This shot from the opening scene, which is one of my favorite openings in all of cinema. But there are so many, like someone previously said.

Touch of Evil:

Masterful long take in the opening shot.
