A scary thing happened on the way to the Movie Forums - Horrorcrammers

I'm doing my own thing for October/Halloween. Still working out the exact details, but currently taking recommendations for horror movies from the years 2015-2022. (Looking for things that would be first-time watches for me.)
2015: Baskin, The Witch
2016: Raw, Train to Busan
2017: Errementari, Marrowbone
2018: Mandy, Possum, The Head Hunter
2019: Color Out of Space, Little Monsters
2020: The Wolf of Snow Hollow, The Invisible Man, Vampires vs. The Bronx
2021: Saloum, She Will
2022: Barbarian, Hatching

Enjoy!

a few weeks ago I decided that my project for October will be to watch every Freddie Francis movie.
So imagine my glee yesterday when I learned that a local theater will be showing The Creeping Flesh on the 15th!

Here's some films that I rated 4 stars or higher. I may or may not be able to defend these ratings, given that I can't remember having watched some of these. So they might actually be terrible. The usual caveats apply. (Some of these got four stars because I thought a tree looked neat, for example.)
I didn't include the obvious ones, or ones that I know you've seen.

2015:
Devil's Candy
Evil Games
The Invitation
Maggie
They Look Like People

2016:
Without Name
Eyes of My Mother
Autopsy of Jane Doe
The Monster
I Am Not a Serial Killer

2017:
Terrified
November
The Ritual
It Comes at Night

2018:
The Last Seance (short)
The Whistler (short)
Your Filthy Heart (short)
The Witch in the Window
Apostle
Ghostland

2019:
La Llorona (the one from Guatemala)
I See You
Saint Maud

2020:
All the Moons
The Rental
The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw

2021:
The Sadness
The Innocents (the one from Norway)
Hellbender
Martyrs Lane

2022:
Pearl (a rare 5-star rating for a first time view. Loved it)
A Wounded Fawn (you haven't logged this on LB, but I'm pretty sure we talked about it in the past. Throwing it out there anyway).

I just assumed Tak had seen It Comes at Night (I'm a big fan of that one), Saint Maud, and The Innocents.

Someone mentioned Marrowbone (looks up, it was Torgo). I haven't seen it, but one critic I follow seemed to be very enamored with it at the time (from the director of The Orphanage).

I've got nothing obscure from that era.
The best I can give you that you may not have seen already is a short, Suicide by Sunlight. (Actually, that's from the 2020s, you might like Watcher if you haven't seen it already).
Seen and enjoyed Watcher, and thanks for the short rec!

@Takoma11 - I second Saint Maud (2019) and The Ritual (2017) - great recent horror films that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Seen Saint Maud (fantastic!), but not The Ritual, thanks!

2017: Marrowbone
2018: The Head Hunter
2019: Little Monsters
2021: Saloum, She Will
2022: Hatching

Enjoy!
Haven't seen these ones yet, thanks!

Also, I will soliciting recs for . . . a lot of other years. But I might throw out 3-4 titles and do an informal poll about which one to prioritize.

Thanks everyone!!

The trick is not minding
Found 3 films I plan to watch on Tubi for October.
Anyone familiar with them?
Baskin (Turkey)
Lokis: Rekopis profesora Wittembacha
(Poland) 1970’s
The Return of the Witch (aka The Witch)
(Finland)1950’s. Seems folk horror?

Baskin is surprisingly good for what it is. Little bit of Hellraiser vibes with a good villain.

The Witch I've seen ages ago as it's, not so surprisingly, shown on Finnish television multiple times. It's based on a play by Mika Waltari and, as far as I remember, it's quite light on horror. I guess you could call it folk horror - it's somewhat dreamy and slow and doesn't really know where it wants to go. Quite a bit of nudity, if my memory is functioning properly. I'm pretty sure the other Finnish horror from the same year, The White Reindeer, is better.

They Look Like People is so good!

Some recommendations for 2015+ from me would be:

Mad God (2021)
We're All Going To The World's Fair (Not the most horror, but I think you'd like it, Tak)
Terrified (2017)
The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears
The Empty Man
In Fabric
The Similars
Skinamarink (Hated it personally, but I reckon if it's someone's kind of movie, they'll absolutely love it)
Shin Godzilla (Letterboxd says it's horror, so why not)
Southbound
The Neon Demon

You've probably seen most of these, but I apparently haven't seen many post 2015 horror films

By the way, the Terrified we're recommending is a Spanish film. Didn't want you to confuse that with TerrifiER.
LOL, yeah. I've seen Terrified and have very little interest in Terrifier (or its sequel).

Please, don't ever see Terrifier or its sequel. You might never watch another movie again.

I have been well warned. They are clearly not films made for my delicate butterfly of a psyche.

My theme for October this year is "Decades of Horror". I'm going to start with 2023 and then watch a film for each year going backwards in time, seeing how far I can get.

I've started working a second job, which in addition to being more hours of work each day is also somewhat physically demanding. It's really put a crimp in my movie-watching because I get home late and then I am very tired.

So I'm just going to be relaxed about it and see how far back I can go. I'll post my upcoming years in here if anyone wants to throw out a few recommendations.

I might make it its own thread, and obviously ya'll are more than welcome to participate in whatever form you like.

Yeah…I’ve purposely refrained from suggesting these as our next double bill for a reason. I’m pretty sure I’d be blocked 😂

For some reason I had assumed you had already seen We're All Going to the World's Fair and The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears. They really seem like movies you had already seen.
I guess tomorrow I should take a moment just to go back over the list of movies from 2015-now and see which ones I thought well of that without the assumption of, "I think she's already seen that."

They do seem like movies I've already seen.

And yet I haven't! So, yes, feel free to suggest obvious-Takoma movies.

I've started the Hooptober run:

The Black Sleep is talky and a bit too much so. Basil Rathbone is able to do what he can and the final 10-15 minutes or so is a nice jolt of adrenaline that the film could have used more of. As for the rest of the eclectic cast, a bit of a mixed bag. Tor Johnson and Lon Chaney Jr. mostly grunt and occasionally choke someone with the time they've been given. Poor Bela Lugosi in his final full movie; he plays a mute doorman. Only Carradine is allowed to talk and he gives the film a spark of energy when he shows up. The lead character who ends up growing a conscience? Dr. Gordon Ramsay! This film is a bit raw and could have used some lamb sauce.

Errementari: The Devil and the Blacksmith is a darned good one from a few years back. Believe it or not, it's a Netflix original! Almost plays like a companion film to Pan's Labyrinth. Essentially, a disgraced blacksmith is guarding a minor demon...torturing him for a deal gone sour. A much bullied little girl sneaks into the house one day to find her doll's missing head and wouldn't you know it, messes things up for everyone. And there's a government agent who has his own reasons for wanting to see the blacksmith...and I won't spoil any more. Just see it!

Dead and Buried is a solid Twilight Zone-ish/Alfred Hitchcock Hour-ish mystery horror about a cop trying to solve some murders that have hit a small New England town, but things take a strange turn. Much like Errementari, I won't spoil it so I'd go ahead and make that another recommendation. Even if the climax lasted a beat or two too long.

Let me be clear: The Pope's Exorcist is a terrible movie. But also, it's terrible in extremely funny B-movie ways. It's like if you took every recycled trope from The Exorcist and shot it like a Marvel movie, with the Pope as Nic Fury and Azmodious the demon as Thanos. It's feels so much like a Catholic Marvel superhero movie, there's no other way to describe it, completely impossible to take seriously at any point. Russel Crowe is slicing the ham extra thick and I'm pretty sure he's in on the gag.
It sounds like one of those so bad, it's almost good films.

If you liked that, maybe check out The Devil and Father Amorth? It's a doc on the priest who's the lead character in this and it also gets into The Exorcist.

I'm gonna be the sour note on The Ritual...it aced the atmosphere exam, but failed in the character's intelligence and good ending tests.

Gimme a good 30 minutes or so and I'll give you some recs.
