I've started the Hooptober run:
The Black Sleep is talky and a bit too much so. Basil Rathbone is able to do what he can and the final 10-15 minutes or so is a nice jolt of adrenaline that the film could have used more of. As for the rest of the eclectic cast, a bit of a mixed bag. Tor Johnson and Lon Chaney Jr. mostly grunt and occasionally choke someone with the time they've been given. Poor Bela Lugosi in his final full movie; he plays a mute doorman. Only Carradine is allowed to talk and he gives the film a spark of energy when he shows up. The lead character who ends up growing a conscience? Dr. Gordon Ramsay! This film is a bit raw and could have used some lamb sauce.
Errementari: The Devil and the Blacksmith is a darned good one from a few years back. Believe it or not, it's a Netflix original! Almost plays like a companion film to Pan's Labyrinth. Essentially, a disgraced blacksmith is guarding a minor demon...torturing him for a deal gone sour. A much bullied little girl sneaks into the house one day to find her doll's missing head and wouldn't you know it, messes things up for everyone. And there's a government agent who has his own reasons for wanting to see the blacksmith...and I won't spoil any more. Just see it!
Dead and Buried is a solid Twilight Zone-ish/Alfred Hitchcock Hour-ish mystery horror about a cop trying to solve some murders that have hit a small New England town, but things take a strange turn. Much like Errementari, I won't spoil it so I'd go ahead and make that another recommendation. Even if the climax lasted a beat or two too long.
