Suggestions for musical films with dark undertones?

Only two I know and love are Sweeney Todd (Depp version but others are wonderful also) and Les Miserables.

It's important to note I hate musicals.Be it live theater or me as a young boy old fast forwarding Disney films when they broke into song

So its not the musical format I'm stuck on, oddly it repulses me if the setting is lalala/cheery, but with a bit of comedy and a darker setting it seems to have resonated into a wonderful combination.

I'm having a very hard time finding more films like this. I'm open to films of any era, prefer it to be English language unless it's really something special.

Thanks for any ideas.

I wouldn't exactly call it a musical, but Saturday Night Fever is dark.

I don't like musicals normally, but three of my favorites are Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Bugsy Malone, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Would Rocky Horror Picture Show count?

I image a lot of the singing would be muffled, though.

I'm not exactly a fan of musicals myself either but definitely do give Repo! The Genetic Opera a look as mentioned by TN above.

I understand your difficulty in finding the kind of film you're looking for, you're looking for something extremely specific that I'm not even sure exists. You are the first poster on this site I have seen admit to liking Sweeney Todd and that's enough to make us BFF's, I hope you find what you're looking for.

One of my all-time favorite movies, Pennies from Heaven (1981). Don't let the fact that it stars Steve Martin and contains happy period songs fool you, this puppy is dark. Read my review HERE.

Not anywhere near as good as Pennies from Heaven but worth seeing, is John Turturro's Romance & Cigarettes (2005).

Phantom of the Paradise!

Phantom of the Paradise (1974). Brian DePalma's cult reworking of Phantom of the Opera through a '70s glamrock/horror prism. Fun *****.

Pennies from Heaven is a perfect suggestion for this guy, Holden, wish I had thought of it.

Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Frank Oz and company's Musical reworking of the Roger Corman flick.

Cry-Baby (1990), John Waters' take on the '50s Teen Rebel genre. It ain't Grease.
