Save the Texas Prairie Chicken
I kind of went on a musicals binge for a while when I took a break from the boards, and musicals help me relax.

I agree that the movie version was a little bit better, but I love the stage version too. I've never seen it live, but I've watched the DVD so many times that I wish I did.
I remember critics not being so crazy about that revival of "Oklahoma". So I was kind of going more because I always loved the musical more than what people were saying. Normally I don't listen to critics, but so many people were negative about it. And after I saw it, I decided that it was in my top 10 shows that I have seen in the theater. I loved it. I worked with a guy who saw it, too. And he couldn't understand why people were so harsh about it because it was very good.

Carousel (1956)
This movie has some of Rodgers & Hammerstein's best songs, including "If I Loved You", "Soliloquy", and "You'll Never Walk Alone".
You can't forget "June Is Bustin' Out All Over". That is my personal favorite.

The Pirates of Penzance! (1983)
I have finally found someone else who has seen this!! I really like the music and the silliness of the show. I always appreciate it when someone creates something like this and never pretends that it is otherwise. Meaning, it is a silly show and it was never meant to be anything else. It is just fun to watch. And I love Kevin Kline as The Pirate King.

Love in the Afternoon (1957)
This is a good movie, but I have the same issue with this movie as with Charade. Audrey Hepburn is too young for her leading man, (or maybe Gary Cooper is too old for her)
Unlike "Charade", the age thing was deliberate in this story.

Daddy Long Legs (1955)
I know you aren't a fan of silent films - so I am not recommending it (this is just a statement ) - I much prefer the Mary Pickford film from 1919. Maybe that is because the silent film stuck to the original story that it was based on. This is a musical that I just didn't care for all that much.

Yes, that's another great song.

I thought that I might be the only one who's even heard of The Pirates of Penzance!. It's nice to know that someone else loves this musical. It's been a favorite of mine for many years, and it's one of my favorite Kevin Kline performances. It's probably the reason that I'm such a big Kevin Kline fan.

Have you seen The Pirate Movie (1982) starring Christopher Atkins and Kristy McNichol? It's based on The Pirates of Penzance. It's not as good, but it's still a fun movie with some good songs.

Glad to hear you like The Bad Seed and Ruby Sparks...thanks for giving me a nod on recommending those films to you...thanks to MovieGal for telling me about Bad Seed too. I've watched a lot of neat films that I would never have seen thanks to the people here. That's one of the good things about this board. So I should watch one of yours now....

Beyond the Sea (2004) I'm going to give that one a try, you're right that Kevin Spacey is a very versatile actor, he looks like Bobby Darrin too. I'll be disappointed if Kate Bosworth makes a bad Sandra Dee...I would have went with Amy Adams.

See, I listen. Sometimes it just takes me a while to get to the recommendations, (especially when I'm trying to watch movies for things like HoFs and countdown lists), but I try to get to the recommendations whenever I can.

I didn't care much for Kate Bosworth as Sandra Dee, but she doesn't ruin the movie at all. I just think there would have been better actresses for the role. Amy Adams probably would have been great as Sandra Dee.

Oh, no. I love it. And in my many years of studying the art of singing , I've sung "Poor Wandering One" many times.

Kevin Kline won a Tony for his role in the stage production. And when you see his performance in here, you know why he won it.

And, as a side note, my brother was always good for randomly singing "Oh, Better Far To Live and Die" so he could sing the words "I am a pirate king".

I don't know if I've heard of that. It seems vaguely familiar, but I am not sure. I will definitely look into that one.

My grandmother was SO in love with Kevin Spacey. We took her to see "American Beauty" and she loved it. But she kept talking about him. So, we took her to see this, which was the last time that she went to the movie theater. And I can still remember her standing with my mother and me while we waited for my brother to bring his car around to the door at the theater. My grandmother just stood there and said "Oh that Kevin Spacey. He really sends me". My mom and I still quote my grandmother every time we see him. And then it generally follows with "Isn't it funny how much she liked him?".

I didn't care for her either in the role. My problem is that I can't think of anybody "cute" enough to play her. She was a "cutesy" person. And there really isn't anyone that fits that nowadays. I sometimes think, that as long as they have their one "name" actor starring in the film, they could use some unknowns. And in the case of Sandra Dee, I bet they could have found an unknown that would have been a better choice.

I'd give her a HA! and a HI-YA! Then I'd kick her.

That's neat story Vamp, thanks for sharing it

While I love The Big Lebowski, I also don't find it all that funny. In parts, sure, but I find it to be more amusing.

I'll be watching Life of Brian again soon, but I also wasn't crazy about it when I saw it long ago. And I agree with you on A Fish Called Wanda.

You guys need to watch my nomination, My Dinner With Jimi, if you want to laugh...But I agree that many comedies are amusing but I don't laugh out loud, which for me is OK.

I'm still trying to find My Dinner With Jimi. My local library doesn't have it anywhere in our county, but the next county over said that they have 1 DVD of it somewhere in their county's library system, and they're trying to locate it and send it to the library closest to me.

Have you guys seen topsy Turvy. Reading you liking The Pirates Of Penzance reminded me of how good Topsy Turvy is

Topsy Turvy has been on my watchlist for a long time, but I never got around to watching it. I'll have to bump it up the list.

Thanks for that. I will watch it as soon as I am done watching what I have to watch this weekend.

Hey! Don't go into watching my nomination with a negative attitude. Maybe, just maybe, you will really like it this time (hopefully! ).

But I agree that many comedies are amusing but I don't laugh out loud, which for me is OK.
Here's the thing for me so far. By the time this weekend is over, I will be done with all of them, except for two of the movies. Those are the two that I own - "Young Frankenstein" and "Life of Brian". I actually need to laugh at something for it to be a good comedy. For the ones that I have seen, I have barely even chuckled at a couple of them. Having said that, I do get the humor. I am not stupid. I just don't think they are laugh out loud comedies. But despite the fact that I may not have actually laughed at anything, it doesn't take away from the movies that I thought were good movies. They may have been humorous. Just not all that funny to me. But still good.

Of course, what do I know? I have a tendency to laugh at raunchier comedies, anyway.

I've seen it. Years ago. I saw it when it was first released on video (yes, I did just use the word "video" ). I remember liking it very much. I always wanted to see it again, but I never got around to it. By your mentioning it, that is another one that I will have to add to my re-watch list.

If you want to see a "laugh out loud" comedy, I highly recommend My Cousin Vinny.

I own "My Cousin Vinny". I loved that movie. I haven't watched it in years, though. And this was going to be an excuse to do so. I have seen it multiple times, but now it has been so long since I last saw it. I suppose, when I am completely finished with all of the movies, then I will watch this one, too. I fully expect to enjoy it as much as I always have.

Trouble with a capitial 'T'
I'll have to watch My Cousin Vinny, I've never seen it, but have wanted to give it a go ever since it came out. If you can get My Dinner With Jimi at your library that's great, but don't knock yourself out to get it, as I don't think you will like it much. You might like it a little? but it's about the 1967-68 rock scene, so it involves lots of 'stuff' that goes along with rock n roll.

Your welcome, gb, for the recommendation for Champagne for Caesar. I really enjoyed it and I'm glad you did as well. Vincent Price was excellent in this and I, too, like to see him in pre-horror stuff. But I like the horror as well.

Born Yesterday (1950)

This is a very entertaining romantic comedy with some drama and a lot of laughs. I thought William Holden and Judy Holliday had great chemistry together. I loved taking the tour of Washington DC with Billie and Paul.

This movie has a terrific cast, but Judy Holliday is outstanding as Billie Dawn. She reminds me of Gracie Allen from the old "Burns & Allen" TV show. Her voice is perfect for the role of a "ditzy blonde", and I love how her voice even gets less annoying as her character gets more intelligent.

The Mouse That Roared (1959)

This movie is kind of silly, in a "Get Smart" sort of way, but it was also funny. It has a cute ending, and if you watch it, watch the opening and closing logo scenes very carefully for a cute surprise.

On a side note, why do their uniforms remind me of Monty Python?

Suddenly (1954)

This movie is a pretty good Film Noir about three killers with a plan to assassinate the President when he comes to the town of Suddenly, California. It's a good movie, but it didn't have the "edge of your seat" feeling that I expected from this kind of thriller.

Frank Sinatra does a good job as a psycho killer, but some of the other actors are just okay.
