Beleaguered police detective Nishi takes desperate measures to try and set things right in a world gone wrong. With his wife suffering from leukemia and his business partner paralyzed from a brutal gangster attack, Nishi borrows from a yakuza loan shark and then robs a bank to clear his debt.

Horibe often paints in a pointillist style, and in the film we see Nishi's wife watching fireworks.
Iroquois
While I don't think it's likely to up-end Sonatine as my favourite Kitano film any time soon, Fireworks is easily the purest distillation of everything that defines Kitano as a filmmaker while also managing to be a strong film in its own right.

In my view this is a film which very much proves less can quite easily result in more when done well, as evidenced at times by the paucity of dialogue.
