American Sniper

Clint Eastwood
2014
132 min.

Clint Eastwood and his republican ideology took it too far this time... The movie is close to being racist but even that could be forgiven (after all he's telling only one side of the story, and from the point of view of an american soldier) if the directing was good. But the fact is that it isn't! It's not oscar material, it's only oscar bait.
Cooper is good enough but the rest of the cast doesn't exist because the director doesn't let that to happen! The editing is really bad (how the hell was this nominated for best editing while Birdman was left out???) because it doesn't let us relate with Kyle. It just skips any human moment he might have!
And at the end, after presenting us with such mixed emotions and opinions about war and "patriotism", Eastwood just ruins it, and lets his republican side win!
It's entertaining enough, it never bores you even if the pacing isn't fast, but it's only another movie...

It isn't close to being racist, it is racist. I couldn't even sit through the entire film.

X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (Roger Corman, 1963) -

This film played out like a Twilight Zone episode that's not quite as sophisticated as something Rod Serling would write. While I had plenty of fun and it was nothing but a good experience, I thought it was a case of a premise being far better in the viewer's imagination than the actual movie, and thus giving one high expectations before the movie begins. It reminded me of the ads in magazines for things you send money for, things like the men of the sea or, har har, x-ray glasses - things that are somewhat underwhelming when you get them. Still, it's a fun flick, I don't mean to be hatin'. I like Roger Corman. He might not be Kurosawa but he's quick and efficient, and that's something I admire greatly.

It's been a long time since I saw it, but I remember it better than that. Still, at least you liked it.

All Cheerleaders Die (Lucky McKee & Chris Sivertson, 2013) -
-

Stupid and full of mostly stupid characters (though the two main characters, Maddy and Leena, are pretty great), but I actually had a fun time with this movie. It tries to be different – maybe unsuccessfully overall, as it does fall into some clichés, but the effort is commendable. I actually like Lucky McKee a lot – May and The Woman are great flicks. This isn’t quite as good as those, but it’s a lot better than most modern horror movies. And in the end, I had a good, entertaining time, which is all I wanted when I started it.

Before man was, war waited for him.
I love X, it's too bad that you don't love it, but at least you don't hate it.

All Cheerleaders Die is directed by the dude who directed May, so it has my attention. I want to see it at some point.

I like X! I feel I was too negative in my review. It might be flawed but I've got nothing but love for it.

The Killers

Don Siegel
1964
93 min.

A remake of a 1946 noir! I didn't see the original yet but I liked this one! The style looks very similar to the one Tarantino used in Pulp Fiction to portrait Jules and Vincent, so he probably got it from this movie (it's also one of his favourite movies).
The soundtrack is great, the acting is good enough, the plot is very well managed and all the twists and turns are carefully placed, but what I liked the most is the true femme fatale, a woman who can love and kill you at the same time, fragile but powerful! And Sheila Farr is that woman!
It lacked a bit pacing in some moments, but the racing scenes are really cool!

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
Angie Dickinson plays Sheila Farr, and Ronald Reagan turns in his last performance as a scumbag before moving on to politics.

I'm sure there's a joke there. If only I could see it.... Good work, mark.

Happy End

Oldrich Lipský
1967
71 min.

A funny czech dark comedy with a brilliant concept!!! The whole film is shot backwards and the story is told from the moment the main character dies till he is born, but narrated as that was a normal life!
It's funny and makes you look at life in a very different way, while it twists your brain in a genious way!

The Man from Earth (Richard Schenkman, 2007) -

From it's specific HoF thread:

This movie was pure intellectual brain food for me. I love stuff like this. I don't care how bad the production quality is or any of that, it's a bunch of people sitting in a room talking so that's all forgivable. Like Sean said, it's basically a way to have the writer gets his thoughts about the world out. But I found those thoughts interesting. I'm not the smartest guy but I love intellectually stimulating stuff, and this definitely delivered. I found myself engaged just due to the dialogue. I imagine it would be easy to be bored if you're not interested in the subjects discussed, so the criticisms are valid to me, but I definitely had a good time myself.

Trying Real Hard To Be The Shepherd
I have given you two reps for watching this movie, which is more stars than I gave the people that made the movie. Somehow that feels uneven.

Blue Car (Karen Moncrieff, 2002) -

From it's specific HoF thread:

Just finished this movie. Really didn't care for it, I felt everything about it was subpar - the script, acting, directing, even the score/soundtrack. I also wasn't very engaged at all and found it a bit dull to be honest. I, like gb, didn't like Meg much either, although not because she was self-centered - most teenagers are. I just thought she was kind of a boring person. And of course, the teacher ended up being no good.

This Boy's Life (Michael Caton-Jones, 1993) -

From it's specific HoF thread:

This isn’t the kind of movie I usually go for but I found myself engaged enough throughout and thought it was a pretty solid flick. Nothing spectacular, but I don’t really have any gripes. I liked the places the story went. I give it a + for the second to last scene with the fight, which was intense as hell. Good nomination.
