The Bates Haunting - 3/10

My girlfriend is willing to try out Horror films that most everybody else would smartly choose to pass up. This is one such case. Terrible film, although weirdly not 100% as terrible as it could have been.


The Fugative - 8/10

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, this is the best film of its year. Great acting, directing and writjng amounting to an immensely enjoyable film.


The Amazing Spider-Man - 8/10

Easily the best Spider-Man film, in my opinion. They finally injected the fun, personality and sarcasm back into a franchise that is largely defined by that (and a guilt-obligation cycle of heroism).

Very solid war flick. Good characters and the action sequences were fantastic. One character and a couple of scenes removed and this would have gotten a much higher rating from me.

If you like The Amazing Spider-Man cut your ties and don't watch the second one. It made me actually think less of the first film. That's how bad it was.

I've already seen it. It's definitely a step down from the first. It was far more focussed on setting up potential sequels / spin-offs than developing its own narrative and characters and ultimately felt like there should have been an Amazing Spider-Man 1.5 between it and the first (in terms of the brevity between films, the direction of Peter's relationship with Gwen, his place in the world, etc...). I didn't think that it was particularly bad, though, just severely flawed (mostly because Sony was so hyper-focussed on creating a one-franchise shared universe so that it can follow the MCU's example of superhero profitability).

Indeed. One of the best movies ever made and one of the very few undisputed masterpieces of animation.

Never Let Me Go (2010)

This is basically a love triangle with a Sci-Fi based theme. I found it to be a bit melodramatic, which I do not mean as an insult, because that's what I like and what I was hoping for. Keira Knightly was terrific, Carey Mulligan was as brilliant as expected, and Andrew Garfield was stunningly amazing. The movie looks great and has a wonderful musical score. The movie is all about emotion, and it has plenty of it. I just wasn't completely emotionally devastated, which is what I wanted, but I was probably being greedy. I would definitely recommend it.

For me, yes, because I'm not really an animation fan. I've only been watching animated movies recently for the upcoming countdown. My favorites, so far, have been the movies in which I completely forget that I'm watching animation, and I truly get into the story and characters in the same way I do live action movies. It's not a knock.

I think you should try Isao Takahata films, like Only Yesterday and Grave of the Fireflies as well as Whisper of the Heart. Hiperrealistic mature slice of life animation without any fantastical elements (besides dream sequences). Other forum members of your age range also love those films.

I have Grave of the Fireflies and Whisper of the Heart marked down, and I'll add Only Yesterday.

Akira is a more "juvenile" film as it is a favorite among those who are greatly impressed by animated violence, as it is extremely violent and features Disney levels of production values.

I did enjoy it but was wondering if maybe I should've watched it first. My plan is to watch all of the animated movies on the various MoFo lists, and also a few others.

Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986)


This was the first time watching this movie in its entirety.


Nick Nolte is great as a homeless man who loses his dog, goes searching for it, and wounds up hopelessly jumping in a swimming pool in the backyard of a wealthy and seriously dysfunctional Beverly Hills family. Richard Dreyfuss plays the patriarch of the family, and he, as usual, is great, too.


The movie was funny and kept my interest from start to finish. That's not to mention the remarkable soundtrack that includes the Talking Heads' classic Once in a Lifetime, and Randy Newman's I Love L.A.

Cricket, I did a review of this movie and called it minimalistic movie making, which was a compliment. Did you feel it was minimalistic in both the story and in the acting?

I read your review when Gbgoodies posted a link to it, and I was thinking about you saying that. My thought was that it wasn't a minimalistic movie as far as what my interpretation of that word means. That's not a term I ever use, but I see it used here all the time. I thought the movie was a slow paced drama, but my interpretaion of minimalistic is something else. I could be wrong about that.

Thanks Cricket for answering. I also could be wrong in my interpretation of minimalistic. I suppose it's a term, like many, that can be used in different ways.

At lease it was a film that made me think about it the next day. Now many days latter, the impact of the film is fading. I don't know why that happens. But it does all the time.

My idea of minimalistic is Jeanne Dielman, maybe Stalker, maybe Dead Man, not sure.

And yea, I don't think Never Let Me Go will stick with me either, but I still thought it was excellent.

Changing Lanes


There's a lot more to this one day plot than appears.
This movie is a great character study. I believe it shows the lengths any man would go to maintain the lifestyle they've worked for. But at the same time each character develops to oppose their previous beliefs. Very solid movie.
