underrated movies

I saw the first Rocky during an overseas flight and liked it. Didn't care much about the others--Rocky 2 was still fairly interesting but they dropped quickly in quality after that. Don't know if I ever got as far as Rocky 5. But I did meet the guy who played the Russian boxer in one Rocky and was surprised that he's shorter than me (I'm 5' 11"). Kirk Douglas was shorter than me, too.
This sums up my Rocky feelings as well. Only difference is that I didn't meet that guy and I'm 5' 10".

A few movies I think are underrated:

Stir Of Echoes
Event Horizon
Secondhand Lions
Hard Rain
Escape From L.A.
Volcano (the one with Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche)

There are others I really like that don't get much notice or love. I might even remember more of them later. lol.

Hard Rain and Stir of Echoes are both underated. I love Stir of Echoes!

One movie I know is underrated it my all time favorite: FRAILTY.

That movie is way underrated and I have to say the movie is fantastic.

Equilibrium is the worlds most under appriciated movie in the history of man kind.

Underrated, most people i know never even heard of "Paris, Je T'Aime." its a bilingual movie, {French and English} made by a smorgasbord of acclaimed international directors, presenting an intimate portrait of one of the most romantic cities in the world: Paris. Each of their short segments is connected to the next in one of the most unique collaborative films of all time. brilliant stuff.

I just bought Unbreakable and watched it yesterday, I think it is very interesting, I am not a big fan of Bruce but he was good in this, his character was not really connected to life etc, I think he did that well

Should I call you Logan, Weapon X?
Waterworld is underrated. I love that film. Kinda like Mad Max on water.

People always say it was the biggest flop of all time but it still made about $40-50 million profit.

I agree with Waterworld and Stir of Echoes being underrated. Stir of Echoes bugged me out big time.

I love rocky movies and am appalled by how many people hate rocky 5.

I saw it when i was 12 and loved it then. seen it many times recently and still love it. Hey, its not the best movie ever but Its not the worst as many people make it out to be.

My friend was persuaded to see it again recently and he changed his mind. What do u guys think? please see it again and u will know what i mean.

another underrated movie is unbreakable by m night shyamalan.
i completely agree about those two. i think people didnt like rocky 5 because it just wasn't a normal rocky movie. i really liked it, but people who are sensitive to change probably had issues with it lol.

i really like the film ravenous. thats underrated. then again its about cannibals... so...you gotta be a little strange to like it : P

yeah. people say they hate rocky 5 cos he didnt fight in the ring which i think is a poor excuse. that street fight was as good as any ring fight. and they say it lacked story?

how can they say that? rocky 5 has more story than 3 and 4. the very people who say this say rocky 4 is their fav which is contradictory and amazes me.

i too have reservations about rocky balboa. for me, traver (dixon) lacked charisma as the previous opponents had. Mr t couldnt act that well but at least he had fire.

second, dixon says to rocky he will do his best to carry him. Now we know he isnt out to hurt rocky what need is there for us to worry about him?

and dixons trainer then tells him to take it easy on balboa which made it even worse. the whole film deflated from then on.
And dixon breaks his arm. oh....man......how many times can u wreck a broken car?

This mr nice guy opponent killed all the tension the other rockys had. stallone was way too cautious and tried to please the critics.

and how can people say this is the best rocky since 1? No way man That is just ridiculous.

what are ur reasons for not liking rocky balboa?

Ok people. I think many of you are confused by the topic. This thread is for underrated films. Let me clarify what underrated means in this context. Underrated means the film is pretty damn good, but gets a bad rap from the public, and was not accepted well by critics. This has nothing to do with how popular the film was, or how known, at all. Listing stuff like Frailty and Stir of Echoes just doesn't fit the category, at all. Frailty currently has a 76% fresh rating on RT. Clearly, it was well accepted by the critics, and, the people that did bother to see it were pleasantly surprised by the film, too. Most of the big name critics gave it positive marks, and the film is pretty well respected around the boards. NOT underrated, at all. Stir of Echoes is another film that has good marks on RT, mostly positive reviews anywhere you look, and was well received by the public when it came out. At least where I lived, people loved it, saw it multiple times, chatted about it online, etc etc. NOT underrated.

If people are confusing lack of popularity or buzz for being underrated, snap out of it! Separate issue, all together...

Also, the guy listing Unbreakable... Wake up! That move is widely heralded all over the globe, is on several MoFo's top 10 films of all time, and is clearly a stellar technical achievement, even if the material isn't your bag. It had a bit of backlash when it first hit theaters, because people were coming off The Sixth Sense and wanted more of the same, so they felt let down by the different turn Unbreakable took. After that nonsense settled down, and people watched it for what it was, many changed their minds became quite fond of the film. Sorry, that film isn't underrated either.

You want some underrated films?

Dead Man (Jarmusch, 1999) - Great surreal film. People hate it for some reason.

Demolition Man (Brambilla, 1993) - Uber silly in all the right ways. Great parody... Oh, does this film make you cringe with it's over-the-top one-liners and ridiculous premise? It's SUPPOSED to.

Mars Attacks (Burton, 1996) - This thing got killed when it was released, but, like Demolition man, I don't think people picked up on the satire until it was too late...

Standing in the Sunlight, Laughing
I finally caught The Village recently and was pleasantly surprised. I'd heard it was several kinds of terrible, but I thought it was a pretty cool off-the-beaten-track love story, with a horror element. William Hurt was doing some kinda nonsense with the cadence of his speech, but otherwise I thought the acting was really good. I think people went into it expecting a big reveal near the end, following the trend of other MNS flicks, and there really isn't one. But what is there is good. I'd rate it higher than the 43% it's getting at RT - upper 70's, low 80's.

Review: Cabin in the Woods 8/10

I may get nailed to the wall for this, but I didn't hate Norbit. If you consider Showtime, Daddy Day Care, and Pluto Nash this film was actually refreshing and allowed Eddie Murphy to return to the type of humor that made films like Coming to America and The Nutty Professor so funny. I know I will catch a lot of crap for this, but I had a good time.

I'll agree with the comments on WATERWORLD. I thought it was a great popcorn flick and everyone seemed to trash it up. Hoppers over the top performance is fun and the inane story line is great crappy/enjoyable movie material. Too many people took this film too seriously. I give it a thumbs up as it is indeed underrated.

So what films do I think are underrated, well here we go.

AMERICAN PSYCHO

I don't know if people were confused by it or were just turned off by it's content, but the bottom line is American Psycho is one of the smartest slasher films put on screen. Judging it as film alone and not comparing it to the source material, Psycho thinks outside the box. With most generic horror slasher films we follow a heroine or impending victim, this time we are with the killer the whole way and whether we like him or not, get to be his friend. Critics gave the film a thumbs down and audiences never showed up, which is weird because it somehow got a sequel. Bale gives us one of his finest performances as Bateman, a business man who has a thirst for blood, who is slowly going insane. One of the best films of 2000.

The Boondock Saints

I'm calling this one underrated due to the problems on the set with director Troy Duffy. Critics panned it, but audiences seemed to love it. Developing a massive cult following, I was hesitant to put it on the list, but the act of the matter remains. What might come off as a Tarantino/Ritchie rip-off is actually a new spin on the genre. With great comedic timing, good performances and an absurd storyline that you just can't wait to see unravel on film, Boondock Saints should have gotten more recognition then it did....from the critics.

DARK CITY

While it was acclaimed by critics, and those who saw it enjoyed it. Dark City is a film that no one has heard about. Being completely overshadowed by The Matrix, Dark City is an underrated gem that perfectly blends film noir and sci/fi into one mind bending film. The direction from Proyas is spot on and the cinematography is breathtaking. If this film was more widely accepted then it wouldn't be on my underrated list. We all know that if it were in a poll against The Matrix it would lose, when we really know it should win. Hence underrated.

The Weatherman

This film was so-so received by critics and audiences. Although name one other film that made you laugh out loud and feel depressed at the same time? Cage plays Spritz with a subtle charm, you know he screws up but you forgive him for it cause it's life and everything that happens is real. This is underrated because it was marketed wrong. Everyone thought it was a feel good comedy, what they got was a life lesson.

Session 9

If your not a horror film (like myself) you may not have heard of this film. It failed to be seen by many people who were too busy with The Sixth Sense. The sets alone are enough to creep the hell out of you. My one gripe is that it was shot on digital, making everything to clean and crisp. For a film like this you need the grainy texture of film to get the eerie feeling. Great film if you want a scary night.

Club Dread

Ah, the most hated and worst reviewed film from the guys at Broken Lizard is my absolute favourite. Bill Paxton is a riot as Coconut Pete and
Chandrasekhar as Puttman the tennis instructor is priceless. I love horror comedies like this (Idle Hands and Slither, two more underrated films). Everything here worked, the corny jokes, the spoofs and cliches.Maybe if more people understood the jokes they would like this film more. Anyways, their strongest film to me if their weakest to everyone else. Can't get anymore underrated then that.

I've got more, but I'm tired.
