missing Kubrick

Tools

Today (March 7th) is already the third anniversary of Stanley Kubrick's passing. It's an easy one for me to remember because it happens to be my little Sister's birthday.

Just wanted to say how much less potential there is in American Film since he died. No more masterpieces to come from that singular talent. I know for those of you who don't dig Kubrick's stuff, it's no big deal, but to me the man's work is unparalleled, and I miss the promise of more. At least we have the movies he did leave behind...and thank the Movie Gods for THAT.

It's worth mourning regardless of what I think of his movies. I happen to have a lot of optimism towards the future when it comes to movies, but I don't deny that he was an amazing filmmaker...he must've been, if so many people adore his work endlessly, even if I'm not one of them.

I was about to respond, but then I read Commish's post, which is almost exactly what I was going to write, so... What he said! However, I did like Full Metal Jacket.

3 years?? Wow.

I remember waking up one morning and hearing it. It felt like one of my family died. It's the only celebrity death that has really affected me.

Kubrick was a great filmmaker. His output wasn't as successful near the end of his career but he was always interesting. Perhaps though it is better that he went when he did. While I enjoyed Eyes Wide Shut and there were great things in Full Metal Jacket, I think his very limited output from the 1980s onwards was disappointing.

He took too long between projects. To spend that many years on the Shining and for it to turn out like it did is a disgrace to such an artist. Eyes Wide Shut also didn't deserve the years of attention that he paid to it. And his procrastination on Full Metal Jacket resulted in it being beaten to the box office by a number of other Vietnam movies. I think Kubrick may have been an example of what can happen when a director is given too much control.

I prefer to remember the man who directed Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange and 2001. These were made when he had a studio to answer to, a strict budget and a schedule. Sometimes rules can be a good thing.

i definitely miss kubrick. a lot. people are always so overly critical, but in the end, kubrick's movies were unique, daring, and ALWAYS interesting, which in an era of trillion-dollar movies and safe thinking, is sorely missed.

as a person, i've only heard good things about him. he was a recluse and a bit eccentric, but everyone who worked with him spoke of his genius like it was epic. ok, there might have been a couple exceptions, but he seemed like an interesting guy to me.

i wish i could find my old "clockwork orange" thread. i just wrote and wrote praise for that movie. oh, well..... all his movies were incredible.

as far as how long he took to make them, who cares? volume has no bearing on the quality of his work. when i write, i take as much time as needed to finish whatever it is i'm working on. if i were a filmmaker, i'm sure i'd take a few years or more between movies. it's an extensive process and there are things in life worth waiting for. Brodie, your Clockwork Orange thread is HERE.

The site's SEARCH function is really quite easy to use. Fiddle with it and I'm sure you'll agree. Never have a thread go missing again!

oh, wow! thank you so much to learn.......

big ups for holden!

This is a huge loss. He was one of the best directors around. Mostly all of his movies will go down as classics IMO.

Though he was not one of my personal favorites, I will miss Kubrick's work. Without a doubt his work will go down as classic, due to his popularity in film. I wasn't big on the guy, but I know some were, and he will always be missed.

Everybody has at one time or another. He was the most original voice(along with Peckinpah) in the era of 60s and 70s cinema. He had an almost complete body of work, yet his only regret in life was he did not make more movies. He was the about the only filmmaker to have films that did not have any faults. As a human and filmmaker he was the same way.
Rest in Peace

Talk about old threads.

But, yeah, this is probably one worth digging up.

I can't believe it has been over 5yrs since He has died, I loved him as a movie maker. He is missed.

ARGH!

I am stick and tired of this stupid site eating my posts when I click "submit reply". It makes me want to punch a wall or something.

Screw it. I'd written a lengthy, intelligent post for all of the Australian MoFos to look at, and now I'm just providing a link instead. I'm sorry, but that's what you get.

Thats a great documentary, watched it the other day. Really gives you an insight into the man behind the films.

I just picked up "The Killing" on DVD, and I can't wait to watch Kubrick at his roots!

Silver - That happens to me a lot, I tend to hit "preview post" about 6 billion times while writing so if I get the error you mentioned, at least I can cut and paste the preview back into the editor and continue writing. After losing a couple of massive posts I had been working on for oh, and hour or so, my frustration led me to this solution. Hope it helps. Watch some Scorsese, that will definitely help.

The Killing is great, really enjoyable. Though not as iconic as his latter work, it still holds its own. Although, I have not seen many other films from that time period.
