The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame IV

Welcome to the 4th Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame! If you're unfamiliar with how this works, take a look at the links below-

Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame I

Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame: Foreign Language Edition
Winner-Citizen Rules

You must choose movies from the available lists that the other members have not seen. Make sure your lists are filled out and up to date!

If you want to nominate a movie longer than 160 minutes for someone, let me know and I'll ask the person if it's ok. If a member has no time limit restrictions, feel free to mention it in the thread when you sign up.

Normally the due date would add up to 1 week per movie. I will add about 2 weeks to that total to give ample time to finish, but there will be a due date!

Anyone can join, but if you've never completed a Hall of Fame before, you will need to watch 4 of the movies picked for you within 1 month before I post your nominations.

You have until Saturday night July 3rd to join. Once Sunday comes you can start sending me your nominations. I ask that you wait until then so that my inbox doesn't fill up.

Any questions go ahead and ask in the thread. Let's go!

For everyone who joins, when picking a movie for me:
I don't like gratuitous violence or gratuitous sex
, I have to watch these films with my wife and we both don't like extreme, dark disturbing stuff, I hate gore-horror films.

***EDIT**

I've been amazed by the "gems" gifted to me, consistently, in this HoF, BUT, if anyone gets stuck, snatch one from the few here at Jab's 2021 Film Challenge.

Could use a bit o' help with that one, too.

Surprisingly the best films for me were in the last all foreign language PR. Some truly great films there.

I may enter, but I'm waiting till the end to see how many people join. I already updated my lists here.

Takoma11 06-28-21 11:51 PM

I'll play.

Just a reminder that despite me being a goody-goody rule follower, if someone prominently involved in the making of the film is a know rapist or otherwise abusive trash person, I will not watch the film. Ditto films with unsimulated animal cruelty/death. If you're not sure if a film crosses this boundary for me, please feel free to ask (via Cricket) and I will clarify.

This past year and this summer have been kind of intense, so I'd love a film that you think of as being joyful or beautiful or optimistic. But that is just a thought and if you think the best thing I haven't seen is some soul-rending sob-fest, go for it!

With all the movies you seem to watch, it's surprising how much you have available to choose from.

100%! The reason I love these PRHoF's is because all the movies are first time watches. As much as I love re-watching my favorite films there are some films where one viewing is enough (I'm looking at you "In a Glass Cage" ;)). The only downer about these HoF's is it's getting tough to pick movies from the MoFo lists for a few people without going with a blind nom or choosing a movie that you're pretty confident they won't enjoy.

I'm in for this one.

I have a huge list of "classic" films that either (1) have never interested me (Gone with the Wind), (2) I have read/heard SO MUCH about that I wanted to give some time to be able to come at them fresh (The Invisible Man), (3) Involve people that make the films an active turn-off (1970s Nosferatu), or I've just never gotten around to (I know I should watch The Conformist I KNOW YA'LL!).

I wouldn't pick Nosferatu for you anyway, but if I would I wouldn't pick it for you for suspected animal cruelty. It wouldn't have occurred to me that you were anti-Herzog.

I'm trying to get a handle on what everyone likes/dislikes in the Personal Rec....that way I can win again;) Seriously I want to give everyone films that they will love or at least like. Can you expand a bit on why some classic films like GWTW don't interest you? It's cool that they don't, I just want to make a good choice for you.

I don't know, honestly. My reaction to it has always just been "eh." I'm not a big fan of any of the actors involved, I don't find the plot description all that compelling, it has a really long run time. (Sorry if that sounds shallow, but I'm talking about what draws me to a film, not how I actually judge a film's worth). I will say that the stills I've seen of it are gorgeous, but as with Barry Lyndon, pretty ain't gonna keep me happy for 3 hours.

But I go into everything with as much of an open mind as possible. The poster for Cranes Are Flying kept me away from it for a while and I loved it. In fact, discovering that something I thought I'd find just medium is actually really great is a wonderful feeling. If there's a classic you're head over heels for, recommend it!

@Takoma11 I remember once you posted a link to a site that listed animal cruelty in films. Can you post that link again? I can't remember what the site was called.

Hey welcome back! You and Siddon were the two people from my Virgin HoF that continued participating in HoFs...glad to see you back. I posted my movie dislikes on the 1st page of this thread and my list are up to date. This should be a fun Personal Rec:)

It's called doesthedogdie.com

Between that and the IMDb Parents' Guide, you can usually suss out what happens.

While I don't love animal cruelty in films, it's really just the unsimulated stuff that is a no-go for me.

Thanks I'll check out my movie choice for you at that site.

Making a full dozen! VERY NICE!!

While I am ALWAYS excited when a new HoF pops up, I do find myself just a little bit more for these Personal Recs. For their high amount of "gems" and discovery of such a strong amount of new favorites. Not that it doesn't occur in others, which it does, it's just that, so far, garnered higher amounts here.

Personal Recs...More gems, less crap:p

So what time on Sunday are we allowed to send our picks? Can we send them at the strike of midnight on Sunday? ;)

Are there any specific directors you don't want to watch?

Polanski, Allen, Salva (not that he's likely to be on any of those lists), Bertolucci.

I might regret it later, but I'm in.

I'm open for any film, but... if you can lean towards shorter films, I'd be more than grateful. Don't think I can handle many 3 hour epics right now.

Hey Fredrick 07-03-21 10:26 AM

Just repeating myself:

Not that I'm expecting any of these to be picked but here are a few movies I've watched parts of and turned off because I thought they were, to be nice, not too good ( I don't check off a movie unless I've seen it all the way through):

Marty, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Wild Bunch, Harold and Maude, Goldfinger, Deep Red, Eyes Wide Shut, Dick Tracy, Alphaville, Oliver!, The Sons of Katie Elder, Billy Madison, My Dinner With Andre, Shakespeare in Love, The Birth of a Nation, Bowling for Columbine, Educating Rita. That's about all of them.

Also, not a fan of Woody Allen, James Bond or Charlie Chaplin. Any genre is fine by me but when it comes to love stories/romance, again not a fan but the older the better and it helps if they're a musical.

The only one I have or would consider for you is The Wild Bunch.

Ok that'll probably be it. Go ahead and start sending your noms in 12 hours. First one to send is guaranteed not to have to pick again.

12 hours? What happened to sending them at the stroke of midnight cause that's what I had planned on doing.

I'm soooo confused:p No wait, I think I get it..So we can send our list in when it's midnight 12:01 AM your time...which is East Coast time. Is that right? cause I was going to stay up late so I can send my list in tonight.

Re: The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame IV

Glad I got that figured out!

I also just changed Thief's movie from a 2.5 hour movie to a 90 minute movie, so that it's a shorter watch. I think I have some good selections for everyone and I sure can't wait for this to start! Very excited:)

cricket 07-03-21 01:43 PM

I will not acknowledge someone's ballot until the ballot of the person or people who sent theirs in sooner are finalized. This is in case #2 has to pick over, but their second choice is one that #8 picked.

cricket 07-03-21 08:09 PM

A little less than 5 hours and you can send your nominations in

Thank you! :D

I'm gonna do a quick run down the lists to make sure I've updated it accordingly, and also see what the heck I'm gonna recommend.

Ok, I didn't check ALL the lists, but did make some updates. Most notables were on the Animated and Documentary lists where I pretty much hadn't checked anything.

Quite honestly, the reveal is one of my favorite parts of this. I always compare mine to everyone else’s.

I’ll echo what has been said previously about the great number of gems that have been represented here the first few times I joined.

Looking forward to joining the next one

I was ready to hit Send.

It was 11:52 pm I was gonna slap that puppy at 12:01 am.
This lil slacker was gonna be FIRST.

Went downstairs.
Came back up.
Forgot about it.

Two hours later. . .

Any titular, hopeful gems sent in, for the wonderful gems I've consistently gotten.

and one bit of trivia, I only have one Blind Grab for someone.
