The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame

1 Attachment(s)
How well do you know your fellow MoFos and what they like?

This will be a different kind of specialty Hall of Fame, not one in which a movie will win, but rather a member.

Instead of the normal practice of nominating one movie for everyone to watch, you will nominate a different movie for every member. You will choose what your fellow members will be watching by picking one that they haven't crossed off from any of their MoFo lists. So make sure that you're lists are up to date! Maybe you'll pick a movie you think someone will love, or maybe you'll pick a favorite of your own that you want someone else to watch. The choice is yours!

There are some positives unique to this Hall of Fame. The biggest is probably that you'll be watching every nomination for the first time, no more rewatching a movie you recently saw or didn't like before. Also, with being on a MoFo list, you will be watching movies that have some acclaim either here or somewhere else. This could be a nice head start on preparation for the next countdown. And it's always nice to cross a few movies off our lists. If someone can't get their hands on a movie they're supposed to watch, whoever nominated it can simply choose another one. There's no concern over other members having already watched it.

There's 2 parts to start this. First you have to join. You have until Sunday night the 15th to do just that. Once Monday the 16th comes, we will know who the members are, and then everyone can send their personal recommendation nominations to me. Once I have them from everyone, I will post them and come up with a due date. If you pick a movie for someone that has already been picked for them, you will simply be asked to pick another. You can pick the same movie for multiple members as long as they all haven't crossed it off their lists.

Voting will be just like any other Hall of Fame. I'm going to put a runtime limit at 2 hours and 40 minutes. For this Hall of Fame, I will waive that limit for people nominating for me. Everyone else has that option as well. Previous winners can be nominated in this Hall of Fame.

Hopefully everyone finishes, but if you watch a movie chosen by someone who drops out, it'll at least probably be a movie that was worth watching.

This should be fun so let's do it.

Great concept. I'm joining, and I also waive the run-time limit for people nominating for me.

I'm in, this should be good fun! I also waive the run-time limit for people nominating for me.

If anyone needs help finding a movie link just ask in the thread and I'll try to help.

I'll go and double check my MoFo list and make sure there up to date.

Re: The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame

I'm going to check my lists as well. They should be updated, but, yeah, I'm in

cricket 03-07-20 08:12 PM

The picture I used for the lists is from Mark's profile. It looks like our friend there is ineligible since he's only missing like 3 movies.

I'm checking my list right now and already found two that I had seen.

John-Connor 03-07-20 08:24 PM

Got a perfect one for CR already, one I'm almost sure about for Cricket, and checking Ed's list now.

Ya better check my list in a few hours:p so far I've found 3 I've seen and I'm still checking.

cricket 03-07-20 08:35 PM

I've been scouting everyone's list for a while. I'm marking down a couple of possibilities for each in case one is chosen. I'm going to pick my noms after everyone sends theirs, so if I say pick again it won't be because I picked it.

edarsenal 03-07-20 08:56 PM

Re: The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame

Okay, I'm done checking my list, so it's all set for everyone.
Gonna start looking at others now (except for CR, going to wait on that one lol)

Your fast! My memory is so foggy:p that a lot of the titles I have to look up and read about. But I'm getting there:)

UPDATE: I found 6 movies I hadn't crossed of my list and I'm done checking.

I had IMDb oped on another tab to double check films. I think I found about five or so films. Most of them recent.

BYW, HOLY SH#T @cricket!! I had NO IDEA how many of these lists you've d@mn neared cleared out. Impressive!

I was in Ahwell's profile and I clicked the wrong list button. I was thinking my god he's only 17 and he's seen all these? Then I finally realized I was looking at my lists.

Re: The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame

I'm probably going to skip this one. Quickly skimmed through some of my lists and the majority of the unseens don't really interest me. There's also a bunch of older films that I may have seen as a kid but don't remember for sure. If only there'd be a feasibly way to do this without the constraints of those lists

I have 3 good picks for you already

I'll tell you what they were once you're definitely not in

My lists may not be up to date. I haven't been too autistic when clicking them and if I didn't 100% remember seeing the film it's not crossed over.

EDIT: And I'm definitely not in. It's a cool concept but I don't feel like investigating other people's lists when I barely manage to tick my own. And like I said, I don't like how it's restricted to films on those lists but unfortunately, there's probably no feasible way to do this otherwise.

A quick guess for those 3 picks: Angst, Raw and Thirteen?

CosmicRunaway 03-08-20 06:33 AM

I really like this idea, but I often have trouble picking out a single film, let alone one for every participant haha.

Originally Posted by Citizen Rules (Post 2070948)

That is exactly my problem for many of the lists that I haven't thoroughly gone through yet. I'm bad with titles, and for certain genres where there are common visuals and/or plot elements (looking at you film noirs :suspicious:), a quick glance at promotional images or even reading a basic plot summary is not necessarily going to be enough to gauge whether or not I've seen it.

I've also intentionally not crossed off films I know I previously watched if I don't really remember enough about them, since if someone asked me my opinion on one of them, I probably wouldn't be able to give a response without seeing it again.

John-Connor 03-08-20 07:01 AM

I usually watch trailers to check if I have already seen a film or not, they seem to jog the memory more than pics or plot summary.
Movies I've watched when I was 'too young', between age 8 and 15, I left open on my lists deliberately.

I had only gone through 4 of your lists and so far Angst was my 1st choice, followed by The Skin I Live In and Heathers.

Picking for some people is easier than others, but I find it almost impossible to pick 1 movie that an entire group will like.

I was eyeballing All the President's Men for you.

As for me, I don't mind watching something I don't like for this because I want to watch everything from the lists anyway.

I'm in but I have a question. Are we going to know who nominated what right off the bat or would we find out after we watch all the movies? For example, if I nominate a movie for Citizen will he know it's my nomination before he watches it or would we reveal all that at the end?

Glad you're in, and I was planning on posting the who a couple of days after the what, just so everybody can wonder for a little bit.

Maybe after a person watched a certain film, then they would find out who their person is for that one film so it still keeps the mystery up throughout?

And I’m totally in! Looking forward to this.

That's a pretty good idea. Whatever you guys want to do is fine with me

I may have worded that poorly. Is this going to be like the VHS HoF where we didn't know who nominated what until the final results were tallied? I kind of like watching the movies without knowing who nominated what. Trying to figure out who nominated which movie was kind of fun, imo.

I also will waive the time limit with one exception - Shoah. Nine hours is a bit much for a HoF.

Yea we could wait all the way until the end or do like Ahwell said. Only thing there is you would know who nominated the last movie you watch. It's up to you guys and you have a week to decide.

Oh, I’ll also waive the length requirement, I’m good with (basically) any length!

Okay. I've gone through my lists and they should be accurate now.

ETA: Assuming everyone else's lists are up to date, I've got recs picked out for everybody.

I don't use mobile but I imagine if you just click on a user's avatar or username you can get to their profile.

Citizen Rules 03-08-20 02:24 PM

I waived the run time...BUT, I don't want to watch a 9 hour film like Shoah. So I will go up to 4 hours run time like in past HoFs.

I'm OK if the noms are kept private, either way is OK with me.

Re: The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame

I think I’ll sit this out but watch how this works out for now, as I have 3 HOF I am in currently so my time is taken up by those at the moment.
I’m really curious how this will work out though, because if this is successful enough to add to the rotation I would definitely be interested in the future.
I’m pretty sure I’d nominate mostly foreign films for everyone. Almost exclusively even 🙂

Siddon 03-08-20 10:39 PM

You will be a challenge because your lists are pretty full.

Siddon 03-08-20 10:53 PM

Also I think these should be blind noms, it could be fun to see who recommended what at the reveal.

We were thinking of not even saying who nominated what until we vote.

Hey Fredrick 03-09-20 08:30 AM

Looks like I'm gonna have to watch a few more movies just to find something for Siddon to watch.

It's not a requirement for you to have seen what you nominate, if that helps.

Hey Fredrick 03-09-20 09:38 AM

Re: The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame

I figured as much but I would hate doing a blind nomination for this one. I thought I had knocked off a good number of flicks from the lists so when I saw Siddons lists it was more of a "Holy Cow!" than anything else. Impressive.

John-Connor 03-09-20 12:07 PM

Got 7 possible recs for MissVicky, still have to do some investigating to narrow it down.
4 options for Siddon and Fred, and a 100+ recs for ahwell :D

I think I would be the easiest person to find a movie nom for?

For me it's easier to pick for people with a top 100/200 like MV and Cricket.

I find you somewhere in the middle with Ed and Fred, the hardest being Siddon and MV, the easiest Ahwell and JC.

That makes sense. I've yet to do a top 100 list...but if it helps, I have done over a 1000 reviews and they can be sorted by 'written by' and rating.

Yep and I will at some point. For me you could probably look at previous HoFs, what I nominated and how I voted. Even how I voted in countdowns.

Definitely avoid anything containing actual animal cruelty. That will get you an automatic last place.

Other things that I tend to dislike (though there are exceptions to just about all of these):

-musicals
-sci-fi/fantasy
-live-action comedies
-documentaries
-arthouse
-primarily female casts
-obnoxious children
-overly-theatrical/wooden acting
-anything overtly religious
-films by Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, or Stanley Kubrick

Things I tend to like:

-violence
-sex
-unhappy endings (If it makes me cry, I'll probably love it.)
:D

There’s my Letterboxd profile, so if anyone wants to choose a movie that’s not on a list just look here, it has everything I’ve seen!

Unless of course we’re making the rule that it has to be on a MoFo list.

Same.

To be fair, though, the only one of my recommendations that I'm confident about is the one for edarsenal and that's only because he so rarely dislikes movies that I like.

So far 2 movies have been picked twice-by 2 different people-for 2 different people.

Thanks for the invite, but while I think this HoF is a great idea, I don't think it's a good idea for me to join.

The main reason is because of the rule (quoted above) that the nominations must be picked from the MoFo lists. There are just too many movies on those lists that I have no interest in watching. (Most of the movies on the MoFo lists that I want to see, I've already seen.)

Plus, I'm terrible at picking movie recommendations for other people. :(

.

cricket 03-10-20 12:55 AM

Unfortunately there's no other way to really do this besides picking from the lists. If I have to ask you if you've seen something, that would sort of give it away. And even though you think there's not many on the lists you would like, there's still a much better chance of you watching movies that you like than a regular HoF, and no chance that you'll watch something you've already seen and didn't like.

edarsenal 03-10-20 01:05 AM

yeah, pretty much lol

I've gotten ones for cricket and john-conner so far. My choice for John was after perusing his favorite 250 List. And cricket's I'm kinda doubtful, since he's nearly cleared out most of his and I have NO IDEA if he'll like it or not. Depending on which of the two choices i go with.
I was waiting on CR to clear his and then I see that we have quite a number of others joining in, which is pretty cool.

I understand the reason for using the lists to pick the nominations. Unfortunately I just don't think it will work for me.

Re: The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame

So I may understand this better, is it all 10 (assuming there are 10 other people who join) participants select a film for me to watch? And then I select a film for the other 10 participants?

Captain Spaulding 03-10-20 02:19 AM

It bugs me that I still haven't reached 100% completion on any of the forum lists, despite having seen thousands of movies in my lifetime. I keep meaning to seek out more titles from the lists instead of watching whatever random crap I come across. This HOF seems like the perfect impetus to do just that. Count me in.

As for length, I can probably handle anything under 10 inches. Oh, wait . . . you mean run-times? 210-minutes is probably my max. People can nominate whatever the hell they want, though, regardless of whether they think I'll like it or not. My taste is usually all over the place.

I'll try to resist the urge to force everyone to watch The Devil's Rejects, but I make no promises. :p

Miss Vicky 03-10-20 02:21 AM

I'll be spending Friday, Saturday, and possibly Sunday in Monterey with friends, so I may not be around for the reveal. I'm really curious to see what films people will think I'll like though. I hope at least a few of you are right.

Yes.

So you'll need to go through the lists section of each person's profile and choose one film from the lists for each of the other participants. Right now we have 10 people signed up. You would make 11. So you will have to choose 10 nominations from the lists and assign one to each person. Your choices have to be from the lists section and must not be something the person has already seen. If more people join, then you'll need to choose a nomination for each of them as well.

Hopefully that clears it up.

Cool if you can join. Unlike other HoFs which aren't about winning but about nominating a film that we think is worthy of induction into the HoF...This one is about winning! It's about who can have the most insight and/or luck in choosing movies for other people.

I’m in the same boat. When I first went through the lists I was surprised by how little I’ve seen. And I’ve seen well over a thousand as well, I'd wager. But to be fair I don’t ever really plan on watching every single one of them in those lists. Some just don’t appeal to me.

Ok, I’m going to reconsider this. I have until Sunday, right? That’ll give me some time to go over everyone’s lists. That’s the daunting part....cross checking everyone's rather lengthy amount of lists and coming Up with a suitable film for all involved.
