The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame III: Foreign Language Edition

Welcome to the third Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame. To help prepare for the upcoming countdown, this HoF will only include non English speaking movies. If you're unfamiliar with how this works, take a peek at the links below-

Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame I
Winner-Neiba

Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame II
Winner-TheUsualSuspect

You must choose movies from the available lists that the other members have not seen!

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....i_S00._RI_.jpg

I'm not sure how it's going to work for the countdown, so for this HoF, silent films are not eligible.

If you want to nominate a movie longer than 160 minutes for someone, let me know and I'll ask the person if it's ok. If a member has no time limit restrictions, feel free to mention it in the thread when you sign up.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/4f/e0...0f4033e0ef.png

There's a little bit of a time crunch, so if you want to participate, say so in this thread by Sunday night March 14th. Start sending your nominations to me via PM Monday morning and we'll get this under way.

There is a firm due date of June 5th regardless of how many members we have. Please do not join if you can't finish by then.

Bring it on and have fun!

Great, you've been so good in the Roulette thread. Keep in mind that you're picking from movies that people haven't crossed off in their lists section.

I'm a bit wary about that deadline. I'm currently behind on the HOF24, which it's supposed to end Mid-April, plus I have my own Monthly Movie Loot challenge, so I don't know. I like the premise a lot, but I'll think about it.

Take a peek Sunday to see how many members there are. 11 members would equal 1 movie per week.

Yeah, that's more or less what I was thinking. Thanks!

Citizen Rules 03-11-21 12:40 PM

Just to be clear, the goal is still the same as in the 1st Personal Recommendation?
Cricket wrote: This will be a different kind of specialty Hall of Fame, not one in which a movie will win, but rather a member.

Instead of the normal practice of nominating one movie for everyone to watch, you will nominate a different movie for every member. You will choose what your fellow members will be watching by picking one that they haven't crossed off from any of their MoFo lists. So make sure that you're lists are up to date! Maybe you'll pick a movie you think someone will love, or maybe you'll pick a favorite of your own that you want someone else to watch. The choice is yours!
I ask because there's some new people joining and they might assume the goal is like the 24th HoF where the member picks films that they love...but here we choose films for others that hopefully they will love and will rate high, and the person with the highest score wins.

Same goal

I though so, good...I'll join!

For everyone who joins, when picking a movie for me that I hopefully will love remember I don't like gratuitous violence or gratuitous sex, I have to watch these films with my wife and we both don't like extreme, dark disturbing stuff, I hate gore horror films.

I'll play.

Can you say again how we know which films people have and have not seen? (Am I supposed to be filling out lists somewhere for others to look at?)

And for anyone picking a film for me, I do not watch films from directors or actors who are sexual predators, and especially people who have victimized children. So if you recommend me something from someone like Victor Salva or Roman Polanski, I won't be sassy/salty about it, I simply will not watch that film. (Not that anyone trying to win this thing would recommend me such a film, but just a general heads up). Same thing goes for films featuring unsimulated animal abuse/violence. I am not opposed to violence or even disturbing content, but harm that has been done to actual living beings completely ruins a film for me. Work and life have been stressful, and I'm not going to bend this personal preference just to be "in the spirit of the game" or whatever. If you are concerned about a film, just give me the title and I'll be happy to let you know if I'd consider it to be in the no-zone.

mark f 03-11-21 06:47 PM

In your Profile, click on Lists, go to the bottom of them, click View All Lists and fill each one out.

Yea just like Mark said. You have your lists filled out so every other member will pick one from those lists that you haven't seen. You look at the other participant's lists and pick a movie for each one that they haven't seen. You just want to make sure your lists are up to date.

I do have one question, does it have to be on a list? This is mainly pertaining to Cricket as I don't have a lot of options for him. But I can think of one he maybe hasn't seen that he would really like.

Yes, but if you have a good side recommendation for me then I'd be happy to try it.

Takoma11 03-13-21 01:30 AM

So it has to be a film from one of the official lists that they have not seen AND is a non-English language film, yes?

Wyldesyde19 03-13-21 01:42 AM

Wish I could join, but I’m still in the middle of two other HOF and a third would really be too much. Sorry guys 🙁.

I already have a lineup of foreign films set up this month, with Herzog, Fukusaku, Chahine, Hark, Pasolini, and Hsou-Hsien films on tap that are available for streaming. Among others.
Have fun guys!

Yes

Siddon 03-13-21 07:21 AM

Anyways for the foreign option I went ahead and exed out some films I watched 20-30 years ago(or films I hadn't finished) so you guys can have some other options for me, I know the chances of people seeing something I hadn't seen before are pretty slim...
  • The Rules of the Game
  • Andrei Rublev
  • The Conformist
  • Come and See
  • Rififi
The other thing to consider is here are some foreign noirs on the list
  • Story of a Love Affair
  • 36th Precinct
  • Death Is A Caress
  • Foreign Land
  • Castle of Sand
  • Der Verlorne
  • The Beautiful Troublemaker
Which if you are going to do a blind nom (which I think many people are going to do for me) Going noir or documentary would be a smart idea.

just a heads up

cricket 03-13-21 11:37 AM

I'm not going to check time limits. If someone gets a movie chosen for them that they deem too long to watch just send me a pm and I'll get a replacement. When picking for me, any length is fine.

I think what Wyldesyde meant was that he had the 24th and the Personal Rec II to finish. Unless there's something going on that I'm not aware of?

Think I did an okay job with my recs. Two things made it tough. Limiting it to foreign language and the fact that I don't know a lot of you very well yet.

Hopefully the combination of looking at your top ten and what I have learned being back a few weeks will be enough. Really want everyone to enjoy the picks.

Cool...I would think I should be easy to chose for as I haven't seen a lot of the well known greats. Now Cricket and Siddon, they've seen everything just about!

I’ll try anything really. Japanese new wave, and Japanese films in general, French New Wave, and Italian Neo realism especially. But feel free to pick anything. I’m open to all experiences.

Perfect that's what I was hoping you'd say! I've been wanting to pick this one film for someone...so you're it:)

Can’t wait to see it!

Oh, and New German wave as well during the 1970’s

My heart wants to waive the time limit, but my tired ass laughs at the prospect of watching a 3+ hour film

In my defense, Siddon is hard to pick for 😑

Wyldesyde19 03-14-21 09:50 PM

Thursday was surprisingly hard to pick for as well

The reveal is always fun.

Takoma11 03-14-21 09:55 PM

To avoid over-thinking, I looked at everyone's favorites, tried to say a common thread (Uplifting! Technically solid! Etc!), then picked the first film I saw that matched those criteria.

Also, what happens if more than one person recommends the same film for the same person?

Cricket will ask you to choose something else

That's a good idea. Just out of curiosity what common thread did you see in my Top 10?

Classics with strong character work.

But so that no one thinks this is tipping my hand, I tried to go with the spirit of what people like as opposed to strict demographics. So some people tended to have one genre or era represented, but my recs didn't always fit those parameters.

For example, I was more likely to be guided by optimism! than movies from the 70s!.

That's a good call for me, I'd say it's true🙂

I kinda did that too. I had a film picked for you that I thought was a good one, but then I read on Wiki that the director was accused of animal cruelty, so I skipped that one of course. You were hard for me as I didn't really have any insight into what you might like or dislike. I know you post on the Rate the Last Movie You Watched thread, but I hardly ever spend any time in there. I hope you like what I picked.

Everyone trying to pick movies for me, having to google "animal cruelty" + "director's name", LOL.

I like a really wide range of genres, decades, styles, etc. I enjoy finding the good in any film I watch, and especially if I know someone is recommending something to me.

I do tag (or try to tag) my reviews, so you can look at those to also get a sense of what I like.

Anyways for the foreign option I went ahead and exed out some films I watched 20-30 years ago(or films I hadn't finished) so you guys can have some other options for me, I know the chances of people seeing something I hadn't seen before are pretty slim...
  • The Rules of the Game
  • Andrei Rublev
  • The Conformist
  • Come and See
  • Rififi
The other thing to consider is here are some foreign noirs on the list
  • Story of a Love Affair
  • 36th Precinct
  • Death Is A Caress
  • Foreign Land
  • Castle of Sand
  • Der Verlorne
  • The Beautiful Troublemaker
Which if you are going to do a blind nom (which I think many people are going to do for me) Going noir or documentary would be a smart idea.
  • Jiro Dreams of Sushi
  • Sans Soleil
  • The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness
  • Histoire(s) du cinéma: Only Cinema
  • The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On

Siddon 03-15-21 05:58 AM

I do this because I like making recommendations I understand that the chances of finding something really great is so slim. Good luck to everybody...I had like 10 choices for everyone

That works. I'm going to try to watch Secret in Their Eyes tonight so I'll be done with 24th.

I love this idea. Shame some people haven't got their favourites filled out...guess they will get pot luck!

I am OK with films up to 3 hours if that helps anyone find something for me.

So I look at the curated lists, look at the participants favourite 10 films, then recommend one for each of them via PM that they have not seen?

PM your picks for each participant to Cricket. We aren't to know who picked what for us.

You PM the list of all your recommendations to Cricket.

You don’t have to look at their individual top ten lists, but it helps get an idea of what to pick. Mostly, I just grab a film they hadn’t seen yet but one that I have, and enjoyed, and go with that.
Welcome aboard!

On the official lists, not people's custom lists. They're the ones you see if you click on someone's lists, though.

Ok, I'm trying to browse everybody's lists to make my picks... I'm having an issue with a few of you (I'm new here, so bear with me). Most of you, I can see the MoFo default lists and what they've crossed out, but a few of you have some personalized lists and no access (that I can see) to the other MoFo default lists. What am I missing?
