The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Films: The Countdown
Welcome to the Movieforums Top 100 Foreign Language Films Countdown! A list of the top movies in a language other than English, as voted for by movieforums members. That’s a lot of films! There were a lot of really good films that didn’t quite make the top 100. So, in anticipation of the question, “how come X movie didn’t make it?”, the answer is simply because other movies got more points. Please join in the discussion, but don’t share your full list until the end. Try to keep discussion respectful and on-topic, and no gongs. Here we go! :) |

Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
Just to note: I will be kicking this off today with the one-pointers, with the intention of starting the list proper tomorrow. Yoda has a few behind the scenes things to do still and is working very hard to make this list awesome, so there may be a slight delay. We appreciate your patience! :)
In the meantime, your predictions/faildictions: What will the films at #100 and #99 be? What will be the most recent film to appear on the list and how high will it get? Which country will have the most films on the list? Which director will appear the most times? How many of the top 100 will be animated movies? |

Very excited for this! I can hardly wait:)
I wonder if any films from America made it that were filmed in a foreign language? I can think of at least one The Passion of the Christ. |
Which country will have the most films on the list?

Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
As I attempted to compile a list, it became very clear to me that I need to see more films made in other countries. I could barely recall a list of 25 that I had seen, let alone a best of. I ended up not submitting a list, instead planning on using this countdown as a jumping off point for more foreign film watching. I plan on participating as much as possible in the thread, or as much as my limited time lately will allow. Thanks to TN for running this thing!

I'll be surprised if Japan doesn't dominate, but I think Italy, France and Russia will do well themselves. I can see about 20% going to Japan FTR.

It has become a bit of a tradition to list the one-pointers. One Pointers are films that received exactly one point, which means a single person had them in the last spot on their ballot (25th), and they received no other votes from anyone else. There were quite a few 1 pointers, 38 in total and they were: https://www.movieforums.com/images/l...eign/line1.PNG The End of the Day (1939) Witchhammer (1970) Audition (2000) Love & Pop (1998) Wild Zero (1999) https://www.movieforums.com/images/l...eign/line2.PNG The Hunt (2012 i) A Story of Yonosuke (2013) He Loves Me... Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
Only seen 2 of those. The Mirror which was quite good and must have been Sean's. Also saw My Life as a Dog but didn't care for that at all.
|
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
That's a long post. Please don't quote the whole thing
There was no picture for Adrift on the Nile. The Hunt had a few more votes, but it became apparent that most of those people meant the other The Hunt from 2012. Same title, same year, much confusion. It might be that the person who had this at #25 also meant the other one, but I didn't hear back from them so I have to take the one they put on their ballot. |
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
I've seen 3 of the 1 pointers: My Life as a Dog, La Vie En Rose and Wild Zero, which was my #25. Is it really the 25th best foreign film I've ever seen? Probably not. Is it a riot of zombies and rock and roll? Yes it is.
|
Witchhammer was my one pointer.
Everyone is aware of the the Salem Witch Trials, but Czechoslovakia also had the Moravia Witch Trials in the 1670’s where many innocent people were tried and executed only after having being tortured into confessing. What’s worse, they were made to implicate others as well. Based on actual events, and actual people, it is also a allegory on the communist trials of the 1950’s in what was then known as the Czech Republic during the communist takeover. I didn’t learn that until after I had watched it, but it helps puts things into perspective. A fascinating look into what happens when an individual is given too much power and how he trampled any who stood against him. And a look a sad and tragic past that they were doomed to repeat. |
I’ve seen four of the one pointers, heard of many of them and of those that I haven’t, most look interesting.
|
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
The Dream of a Ridiculous Man is from me. I put it at that spot for the specific reason of getting it some representation. I nominated in the current Russian Hall and it is getting a good reception. I'm just happy to get some eyeballs on it, it's the best film from the great director Aleksandr Petrov who has only made good films.
|
I've seen 11 of the 1-pointers. (Yes, Smog Monster is one of them.)
|
He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not was mine. I never managed to get out of my movie watching slump so all of my list was based on memory alone. It's been some time since I last watched it, but I remember really liking the way the story was told from two very differing perspectives.
The only other one I know I've seen is In This Corner of the World. I only watched it once (under less than ideal circumstances while on a road trip) and was kind of underwhelmed. I've been meaning to give it a second chance though. My Ballot: 25. He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not (One-Pointers) |
Seen a few of those and Red Angel was a contender for my list. My 1 pointer has a good chance to make the countdown. F**k tradition:D

The Mirror is also the only one pointer I have seen. White Material I s the only ones be really on my radar so this should be interesting.
|
La fin du jour [The End Of The Day] is mine, it made my 1930s countdown and is directed by Julien Duvivier (who also helmed Pépé Le Moko two years earlier for those that know that one). Sadly it never made that countdown, I was quite possibly the only one to vote for it - so decided it had to get my one-pointer spot for this in order to give it that moment in the limelight I feel it deserves.
Aside from them both having being released in 1939 (and my rating both +) there's absolutely no connection to Le jour se lève [Daylight] - but they'd still make a quality 'dawn to dusk' double-bill imo. Of the other one-pointers I've only seen:
As ever the one-pointer list makes me feel unworthy of being a MoFo :D |
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
Hmm, genuinely surprised that Audition only got one vote. I mean, I didn't vote for it, and I'm not a very huge fan of it, but it always gets mentioned when people ask for foreign recommendations.
The only other One-Pointers I've seen were... JCVD (2008) Mongol (2007) I had both of these in my bubble, but there's just too much good stuff to nominate. I also haven't seen Mongol since its release so it's somewhat blurry in my mind. The last One-Pointer I saw was MINE :D The Lunchbox (2013) https://www.sbs.com.au/movies/sites/...?itok=9zpSm6S4 A beautiful and touching Indian film about two unsuspecting people meeting and maybe falling in love. Even though it might seem like a romantic film on the surface, it's really a more introspective look into relationships and age. Wonderful performances by the two leads (Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur). |
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
Actually I think I saw Audition way back in the day, but remember nothing of it. Think it was for a mofo tournament.
|
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
I've seen 21 of the one-pointers and have 3 lined up to watch this week. Good kick-off to the countdown.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
F*** Cinema (2004) is my one-pointer. :3
|
The Blue Light (1932) was my one pointer. I wanted some recognition for one of the great women directors, Leni Riefenstahl.
"At one time Leni Riefenstahl was considered the world's greatest woman director. That was before her association with members of the Nazi party lead to her being blacklisted. The Blue Light was her first film and it's easy to see why she was so well respected as a director/cinematographer. Her attention to artistic cinematography and details gives the film an ethereal quality." CR |
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
The only one pointers I've seen are:
Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks The Dream of a Ridiculous Man |
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
I just checked and I think I started the one-pointer tradition. My Mofo legacy!
On that note, I got a one-pointer: Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks (2004) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389448/ An amazing documentary that I highly recommend, assuming you have just over nine hours of free time to watch it. You can break it up into parts if nine hours is too much for one sitting. Five hours one day, four later in the day. Or something like that. |

Tie Xi Qu us amazing but it's so 2013. Real cinephiles watch his Crude Oil now. 14 hours.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
Of the ones on the list, I've only heard of La Vie en Rose, Audition and The Lunchbox. Only had a chance to see the latter...missed it due to school stuff, but I've been keeping a list of titles I missed over the years and I plan to catch up to them one day.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
Anna was my No.25., a 15 minute film about a woman desperately searching for a better life. It's so short but it is so well made and packs such a punch, I really hope the director of it makes a feature someday.
I saw it on an online film festival so I don't know when it will be made widely available, but take note of it so you can check it out when it's out. All I'll say about the rest of them is that I have a few of them on my watchlist and I'm quite surprised no one else picked Audition, I thought it was a classic. |
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
Completely forgotten what I picked for this. Heavily reworked my favourites list after submitting my ballot for this lol.

I think Kurosawa will win this for the record, but I'm rooting for Ozu, Mizoguchi, or Bergman

Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
Pretty sure I've seen six of the one-pointers.
Audition was the first Miike I saw. I wasn't a huge fan back then, but I think it deserves a rewatch, to be honest. The viewing of The Way of the Dragon is even further back in time, but I doubt it'll benefit from a rewatch. Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky is yet another one I've seen too long ago to say anything meaningful. I mostly remember some over-the-top violence. JCVD was pretty OK, and it showed that JCVD can even act. The Platform was an OK (and above-average Netflix film) dystopia/political allegory. And my own one-pointer was Eight Deadly Shots (or Kahdeksan surmanluotia as the original Finnish title is). One of the few Finnish films I like. It's a TV production inspired by true events and done with huge passion (director and the star of the film, Mikko Niskanen, drank moonshine and sleep-deprived himself to get to a proper mental state). I've read that 4k restoration is being done (funded by Coppola's foundation), but there hasn't been any news in a couple of years. Hopefully, it gets released by Criterion or something. |
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
From the one-pointers, I've seen The Way of the Dragon, JCVD and The Lunchbox. None are favourites, but I do like them all. Dragon has a scene where a character gets hit in the balls so hard that he dies, so it's obviously quality cinema.
|
Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
Also, I realized after the deadline that there was one movie I'd meant to vote for and have been kicking myself for not including it. Let's see if it makes the countdown.

I thought I'd wasted my 1 pointer by not choosing an obscure enough film. I'm the one person who had Audition on his list (albeit 25th) - and if @Paulielexx hadn't of missed the deadline it wouldn't gave graced the 1-pointer reveal. For that I'm kind of grateful.
It's been ages since I saw JCVD, but I remember really liking it a lot. It's one of those films I never want to watch again for fear it won't be good a second time around... |

A significant historical figure, the warrior-king who united the disparate tribes of Mongolia and created one of the world's greatest empires in history. Wolves, thunder, lightning, monumental landscape shots, epic and glorious horse and sword battles. Assassins on horse with double blades. My one pointer is White Material (2009)
https://feminema.files.wordpress.com...l-original.jpg This is the story of a family of white farmers in an unnamed African country. As a civil war erupts the family tries to sell one last crop while the rebels take over the country. What I like about this film is that it doesn't just portray colonialist as a bad and the rebels as good. All the characters are given a sense of humanity and shown to be complex and flawed human beings. This is the sort of thing you don't see in Hollywood films. |

Oh, it's a trip alright. Imagine if a Bruce Lee movie had effects straight out of early Sam Raimi or Peter Jackson.
|
Dammit. I really did mean to get a list in for this.
Of the one pointers I've seen Audition, Wild Zero, Way of the Dragon, Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky and Mongol. |
For one-pointers, I've seen three, two of which, I fully agree with what has been said by the ones nominating them:

https://thumbs.gfycat.com/Warmhearte...restricted.gif In This Corner of the World (2016) ++ I had first caught an interest in this film when @Guaporense had it as a 1 pointer in the recent Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown. Putting it on my Watchlist in @Jabs' 2021 Film Challenge. So I must thank Guap for introducing me to this heartfelt, endearing slice of life, bit of cinema. Set during World War II in in a rural area near Hiroshima, Japan, we get to know Suzu, a young girl who loves to draw, get married to a boy she barely knows and the everyday life of becoming a housewife. A rather warm and beautiful tale that drew me in by the simple storyline and the family she marries into that caused me to smile, chuckle and fall in love with them all. And at times, especially at the end, cry. And I must add they were joyful tears at those surviving and continuing forward in the ashes of the aftermath. A truly beautiful, life-affirming film that I am thankful to have watched and will be, again, in the future. Again, thank you gaup. https://pa1.narvii.com/6509/a7c2dab8...e85bfe6_hq.gif Movies Seen: 0 of 0 (0.00%) 25) In This Corner of the World (2016) One Pointer |

JCVD was my one-pointer. Hopefully there's a parallel universe where Van Damme received an Oscar nomination, in addition to a slew of other awards, for his vulnerable performance in the film, catapulting him back into the mainstream and rescuing him from the doldrums of direct-to-video fare that rarely capitalize on his talent and charisma. To anyone who says the man can't act, I present this six-minute monologue in which Van Damme breaks the fourth wall to bare his soul to the viewer. Remove the impressively choreographed long take during the opening credits and you essentially remove all action from the film. JCVD is more akin to an extremely meta Dog Day Afternoon than Bloodsport or Kickboxer. Van Damme, playing a fictionalized version of himself, is taken hostage at a Belgium post office by petty criminals whom the action hero would typically dispose of with a single roundhouse kick, but this isn't a movie set with pulled punches and guns equipped with blanks. This is the "real world," with real violence and life-or-death consequences. How does an action hero save the day when there's no script or second takes? I grew up idolizing the Muscles from Brussels and still consider him one of my favorite actors, so the blurring of reality and fiction in JCVD likely hits harder for me than it would non-fans, especially with Van Damme exposing the naked vulnerabilities and real-life shortcomings beneath his on-screen persona; but this is a movie I would also highly recommend to people who wouldn't typically watch anything Van Damme related. Here he aims to roundhouse kick you in the soul, not the face. As for the other one-pointers, I've seen seven in total. My favorite of those is Riki-Oh, which is one of the most cartoonishly violent films I've ever watched. It's like a live-action Fist of the North Star set within a prison. |

Remember that this is a foreign language movie list, so it's only available in foreign countries. You have to get a VPN and change your location to read it.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
You'll all probably have to readjust your clocks for this countdown, Thursday's on Britland time I believe, so it'll probably be more evenings than mornings day-to-day.
Anyway, for my end, I think we've reached the level of Acceptable (no promises I won't tweak things as we go though ;)), so it's close now. |

Re: The MoFo Top 100 Foreign Language Film Countdown
I'm still wondering if the home-video of our very own @cat_sidhe flicking through an Ikea catalogue whilst sitting on the can will have garnered enough support to make it?
(I know technically it never had a cinema release but even the Oscars are allowing internet crap in these days so imo it might still qualify) |

So just dropping in to check things out, where is #100 and #99? lol

my one pointer didn't make it, well, I guess it might make the top 100 (it is kinda famous but not among the ones sure to make it)
