Good job:up: Siddon. I like your rules/guidelines, this should be fun!
I'll send my nom soon as I can make up my mind:p I have several I'm considering.

One question, how does this work?, "I'm also fine if you want to submit a list of 5 potential noms for feedback from the participants"
Would we submit the list of 5 potential noms on the thread? or to you by PM? and would we do that now? or at a later date?

Just do a list of five,

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Seance on a Wet Afternoon
The Little Stranger
Forbidden Planet
That Hamilton Woman

So instead of hearing about how XYZ is going to hate this movie it gives them an option to get early feedback. These things run 3-4 months so I think this way it might allow for a more competitive competition.

2001: A Space Odyssey
The Godfather
The Wizard of Oz
The Dark Knight
Citizen Kane

Siddon 01-22-19 02:06 PM

The Godfather - was nominated last year, came in fourth for BP, still biter but might want to pass on that.

2001: A Space Odyssey - watched it again this summer, liked it a lot.

Citizen Kane- well it's my all-time favorite

The Wizard of Oz - wouldn't mind a rewatch

The Dark Knight - it's a good pick in my eyes

I hate this movie.

The Godfather
Good, but would probably rank in the middle or low end of my ballot depending on what's nominated.

The Wizard of Oz
I hate this movie.

The Dark Knight
I used to love this movie but have liked it less and less each time I watch it.

Citizen Kane
I respect this film but found it really boring. Would probably rank low on my ballot depending on what else is nominated.

Anyway, I'll probably join but am debating on what to nominate. I've never gone into one of these with a strong eye on winning and I don't intend to start that now, so I probably won't post a list for consideration. I'll just go with whatever my gut tells me, like usual.

I've only seen Raiders, which I like but it's my least favorite of the original Indiana Jones trilogy.

So... now what. Sorry, do I just nominate one of the movies in my list after people have given their feedback? Like, whichever one was received the best?

Me too, I don't try to pick a film with the intent to win. Heck I don't always vote my own movie as my #1 on my voting ballot. I usually pick something that I want to watch, and that I believe in, and think it's worthy of being nominated...with the hope at least someone will like it.

Were those meant as your 5 potential noms? I didn't comment as I though they were just examples.

I've not seen two of those. One I haven't seen in the longest time, but did like it....And I had considered nominating two of them myself, hell maybe I still will!....Probably not hard to guess which one's they are.

You choose a movie to nominate and then send that to siddon in a private message. After sign ups, siddon will post the nominations and set a deadline. Everyone who is participating will have to watch and write up all of the nominated movies. Once you're done watching and writing them up, you send siddon a list of all of the nominated movies in ranked order from best to worst via private message. We are usually given one week per nominated movie to get this done. More specific rules are in the first post of the thread.

Yeah those were my five, you can take the two that you want I've got two replacements

Love and Mercy (2015) and Touch of Evil (1958)

Just do the list and see what happens more information isn't worse than less information.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Ben-Hur
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
2001: A Space Odyssey

I was joking in that I wasn't going to take one of your noms:p but serious that I like them good enough to have considered them for other HoFs. I have a list of like 300 or more movies that I consider so lots of the well known films are on my maybe list. Like Touch of Evil! But no I was going to nominate it. I have my nom picked out it's something most haven't seen, I'm pretty sure of that.

Ben-Hur is 212 minutes, Siddon said 220 minutes and under, so it would qualify.

I think we should go back to the original 240 minutes or under rule for the next HoF, there's a number of movies that aren't allowed otherwise.

Snow White would be a solid animation for a General HoF and the others are worthwhile, @ahwell

and with @Siddon's list:

Raiders of the Lost Ark -- always a fav
Seance on a Wet Afternoon -- have not seen
The Little Stranger -- haven't seen
Forbidden Planet -- surprisingly a good ole Sci Fi film I STILL haven't sat down and watched
That Hamilton Woman -- good flick, been a long time since I've seen it

Eh, I'm not trying to be mean but if I remember correctly there were multiple HOFs you didn't finish and idk if I want to join if there's too many questionable nominees that won't finish. Of course, I'm not host so my opinion is worth nothing.

ahwell 01-22-19 09:17 PM

Raiders is the only one I've seen- it's pretty good, not one of my favorites.

Yup just keep in mind

1 movie the first 2 weeks
2 movies the first month
4 movies the first 6 weeks

I'm hoping for a higher quality of nom's so hopefully it would inspire people to not drop out

Also what films are you thinking of?

Would it be possible for me to just be an honorary member, and people won't have to watch my movie until I've watched all of the other noms.

Also no hard feelings against anyone who doesn't want me in the HoF I've committed to these things and not followed through at least 3 times it's totally understandable.

See I like that as it weeds out the riff raft;) right from the get go.

You should expand that to include 6 movies (by such and such time), 8 movies, 10 movies, etc.. so that someone doesn't watch only 4 movies then set on their ass until they drop out at the end.

pahaK 01-23-19 12:04 AM

Re: 18th Mofo Hall of Fame

Like @Miss Vicky and @Citizen Rules I don't do HoFs to compete. I'm interested in seeing films others consider good but that wouldn't have landed on my watchlist otherwise (I've even enjoyed few of those). I also try to nominate films that I like a lot and that everyone hasn't already seen.

Raiders is good (without rewatching the whole series I'd say it's my 2nd favorite Indy after Temple). Forbidden Planet I've seen ages ago and don't have too positive memories of it.

Haven't seen the others but Seance and Little Stranger look interesting. I think there's a high chance I'd hate Hamilton Woman but who knows, maybe it'll surprise me.

Of your replacements Love & Mercy doesn't sound too interesting to me. Touch of Evil I've seen ages ago and it's been on my rewatch list for a while now (I remember it being quite good).

Jaws is OK I'd remember. I'm not a huge fan but not hater either. Snow White I haven't (surprisingly) seen but I don't expect to like it. Ben-Hur was a real bore last time I saw it. Holy Grail is one of the best comedies ever made and probably my favorite Python. 2001 is my controversial movie opinion - I've tried to watch it several times but never managed to finish. I've been meaning to give it another go so nominating it would at least ensure that I'd see it completely.

If we have 10 entrants then the deadline is 10 weeks so they have a month to finish 6 films or they are out.

If we get 15 participants I'll add another cut line but it seems to me that when people drop out they do so at the pre-mid point.

This is also easier for me because I'm not going to be around much in February I have hard deadlines I can send out the pm's make the checks and come back.

Re: 18th Mofo Hall of Fame

Okay, screw it. I've been debating on what to nominate. I was torn between three movies - one is a long time favorite that I've considered for several HOFs and think could do well, another is a long time favorite that probably won't do well but is relevant to the upcoming countdown, and the third is a recent discovery that I really loved, is relevant to the countdown, and probably would do well. As illogical as it might be, I'm going with option #2.

MijaFrost 01-24-19 06:58 PM

I enjoy participating in HOFs, but I have a huge backlog right now of stuff I need to watch, so I would prefer to wait until after the reveal to check what's been nominated and if I can find everything, and then possibly send in a nom, if that's ok with you, @Siddon.

Care to tell us what you would nave nominated?

rauldc14 01-28-19 12:51 PM

Re: 18th Mofo Hall of Fame

My original pick was actually going to go way out there and I was going to nominate The Great Mouse Detective. I've been thinking about how seriously underrated I think it is as both an animation film and just for Disney in general. But I ultimately decided to go a different way. One of these times I will pull the trigger and do an animation nomination in a general.

I love animated films, but not that particular animated film. I'm glad you decided against it. At least, I think I'm glad but then we'll see what you actually chose.

That would've been cool to see and I bet it would have done much better than you think. It might not have won but I bet it would come in at the middle of the pack at least.

Re: 18th Mofo Hall of Fame

The movie I was going to go with would've probably came in last place:( I love it! and I know a couple of MoFos do too, but some hate it. I might use it another time, it is so fun to watch (at least for me).

Siddon 01-28-19 01:59 PM

Re: 18th Mofo Hall of Fame

Haven't seen either of the first two noms. I'm not a huge fan of animation so I don't expect to like Snow White that much but I try to see it with open mind. Bubba-Ho Tep interests me due to its cult status but other than that I have no idea what to expect.

Siddon 01-28-19 02:13 PM

2018's The Little Stranger

pahaK 01-28-19 02:35 PM

Re: 18th Mofo Hall of Fame

Road to Perdition is the first one I've seen (besides my own). I think it was OK but it's been a long time. The other Hanks I haven't seen. Florida Project has been on my watchlist for months and now I'll finally get a good excuse to actually watch it.

EDIT: Little Stranger still looks interesting.

Besides my own nomination, I've seen Snow White, Road to Perdition, and Valley of the Dolls. It's been quite a long time since I last watched Road to Perdition and Valley of the Dolls though, and I don't remember much about them.

pahaK 01-28-19 02:49 PM

Re: 18th Mofo Hall of Fame

Okay, @Citizen Rules I'm sorry but I'm probably going to hate your nom :D It doesn't look like my film at all.

You misunderstood me. I was making small talk and saying I had considered VOD but I know it would come in last. Anyway my nom is Abandon Ship aka Seven Days Away

EDIT: Thanks for changing it.

Re: 18th Mofo Hall of Fame

I don't think Im gonna take part in this one. Maybe in the future

MijaFrost 01-28-19 06:34 PM

This looks like an interesting HOF.

The only ones I've seen were Snow White when I was a child, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close back when it was released.

Never heard of 1989's Split or CitizenRule's correct nom.

Bubba Ho-Tep, Road to Perdition and The Florida Project have all been on my "must watch list."

I think though that unfortunately I'll have to skip this one... haven't been able to decide on a nom and as I said earlier I have piles of stuff to watch. If I can get that out of the way hopefully I can join another HOF soon.

If I do end up watching any of these titles during the run, I'll stop by and share my review (though obviously I wouldn't take part in the voting).

Siddon 01-28-19 08:49 PM

And we've got two more entrants...

Coming in at Nomination number 10 from @Yam12

a film on the 1001 films to see before you die, the film that almost broke Martin Scorsese

https://d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.ne...-1-700x300.jpg

The King of Comedy (1982)

Siddon 01-28-19 08:51 PM

And here we are at #11 from @Nathaniel

we started this list with Snow White I figure we would end with it's almost opposite version the horror/thriller anime

Perfect Blue (1997)

Miss Vicky 01-28-19 08:52 PM

Perfect Blue is an excellent film and one that's in my personal collection.
Haven't seen The King of Comedy yet.

Yam12 01-28-19 08:55 PM

Re: 18th Mofo Hall of Fame

Only seen my nom out of all of these.

Out of the nominated films, Perfect Blue and The Florida Project are the ones I want to see the most.

The Little Stranger is a film that is difficult to genre classify it's quite clearly an adaptation of a novel as you can practically see each chapter break in the film. The basic plot of the story is a doctor (Domnhall Gleeson) is called to a ramshackled estate of the Ayers family. Strange things happen the story progresses and when the film ends you are left with a number of questions. If you enjoyed Jane Eyre, Rebecca, and The Haunting this film is up your alley. If you need things explained to you or you are not willing to accept different interpretations of character and motive this film is going to be a huge problem for you.

My biggest problem was with the casting, Gleeson and Wilson are both very good, however you've got continuity issues with the ages of the characters and the actors. All the characters are really compelling, Gleeson is a very stiff upper lip repressed man in his late thirties/early forties. He's sort of an in-between dealing with commoners who disgust him and the wealthy caste who view him as a tool. Ruth Wilson plays an older unmarried sister, stuck in a sort of spinster role. She's put-upon to take care of the estate and her brother a damaged WWII pilot who thanks to gender roles is "running the house".

The film touches on a number of issues from the economical to the social to the mystical to at it's core the psychological. Faraday(Gleeson) is an extremely compelling character and you reach a point in the film where your perspective shifts. The problem though is that it feels like it's so close to being a classic but it's just missing a few things but I was moved and affected by it, and others will as well.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) is an historically significant film this was the first of Disney's 57 features and watching this film again as an adult I well....didn't care for it. Snow White is the story of a princess who is also a servant who falls in love was a prince and the Queen decides because she's pretty she has to die. I mean when you really break down the plot of the film it makes almost no sense.

Snow White is then tipped off by the woodsman and she finds shelter with seven dwarfs who mine diamonds yet they all live in a ramshackle cabin...why are they doing this...who knows once again watching this film 80 years later the plot doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Also Snow White as a character...kinda sucks she's needy, bossy and single minded she's led by romantic desires and a sense of achieving the ultimate goal...being a homemaker.

Really what this movie is about is set ups for each musical number which I enjoyed for what they were. The animation is fairly rudimentary as the character movements don't seem to fully seem normal I think you have to wait till Pinochio and Fantasia before the films feel finished. What I love about the film is the non-animated handdrawn stills you see pop up every once and while.

When you can just take a step back and enjoy the art of the film it's fantastic.

My nom, Seven Days from Now (1957) aka Seven Waves Away aka Abandon Ship! has never been released on DVD so it won't be at your library or on pay per streaming. I do have a couple of links for it. PM me if you need them.

I suggest watching it sooner than later in case those links go missing. It's a short film, only 90 minutes and I guarantee you won't be bored.

Re: 18th Mofo Hall of Fame

Really enjoyed the reveals @Siddon, VERY nicely done!!!

Abandon Ship! (Richard Sale, 1957) IMDb Never heard of this one but looking forward to it

Brimstone (Martin Koolhoven, 2016) IMDb It looks familiar, but I'm pretty sure I haven't seen it. Still, should be up my alley

Bubba Ho-Tep (Don Coscarelli, 2002) IMDb Have seen this and was surprised at the time that I didn't enjoy it. We'll see.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Stephen Daldry, 2011) IMDb Haven't see this one

The Florida Project (Sean Baker, 2017) IMDb Not familiar with this one but I DO enjoy Defoe

The King of Comedy (Martin Scorsese, 1982) IMDb Another I didn't like the first time around but who knows. . .

The Little Stranger (Lenny Abrahamson, 2018) IMDb Unknown but looks intriguing

Pāfekuto burū (Perfect Blue) (Satoshi Kon, 1997) IMDb LOVE this one!!

Road to Perdition (Sam Mendes, 2002) IMDb My choice, quite the favorite of mine

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (William Cottrell, David Hand, et al., 1937) IMDb ALWAYS in the mood to see some very old school Disney.

Split (Chris Shaw, 1989 this should be quite the interesting crap shoot.

Is it wrong that I'm kind of hoping you still won't like it? I mean, really I hope everyone enjoys it (and votes for it for the horror countdown :D ) but it would make me feel less bad about the fact that I pretty much never like your noms.

Incidentally, the one thing I remember about Road to Perdition was that I didn't like it.

10 minutes into Split...well good news @pahaK Child Bride might no longer be my goto for terrible Hall of Fame choices.

tell ya what, we'll promise each other to simply hate each other's nom on this one ;)

But yeah, it was kinda funny when I saw it and thought, "Well, here's a first. A Miss Vicky nom I don't absolutely love. Hmm."
