    Definitely a curiosity piece that if you liked 2001 you should at least check out 2010. It's certainly not as good but for me at least it didn't lessen the effect 2001 had on me, especially since Kubrick didn't direct. I agree with your father, and no film is unworthy of being watched. For aspiring filmmakers you can learn more from a bad film than a good. The good will entice you to imitate, the bad will show you what not to do...not that I think 2010 is bad or anything.
