I'm disappointed that you would give Léon a higher rating than 2001: A Space Odyssey. Yoda, I need that tsk smiley now.

2001 is a fantastic film but Sci-Fi just really isn't my thing. But on a rewatch it would get higher. It's number 13 now because I upped the rating to a 94. The lowest on my top 10 is also a 94 so it doesn't need much to make it.

It's also becoming very "desirable" to watch. This is the same thing that happened with Clockwork, I had to watch it again and it them made my number 1 spot.

Leon is a great film. I'd have probably rated both films in the 90's myself.

I plan to post my top 100 at the end of the year when it has been fully defined so I won't be giving much away. But only things I've seen since the 1st make it on the list. I've started fresh. Everything on my top 100 is in this thread. I'll tell you each time something is knocked off which will be regular.

Audition has been knocked off my Top 100.

Current Lowest Rating = 74/100.

Don't buckle, Rhys. 2001 is crap and they know it. :p Leon is much better and it's on my 100.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

THIS ALREADY HIGHLY ARBITRARY LIST JUST GOT MARGINALLY LESS ARBITRARY! DON'T YOU KNOW THE POINT OF LISTS!!?!?!!!

Rhys
04-28-14, 06:11 PM
It's my personal Top 100. My favorite films. I'm not necessarily rating the film on how well it is made, or how "technically" perfect is it or whatever. If I don't like something as much as you like something that shouldn't matter.

I removed Audition because I enjoyed other films more. That isn't unreasonable.

Rhys
04-28-14, 06:29 PM
Just to add, my list will soon be filled with films I love. This is just a starter list, in a way, so it is going to be quite "dynamic". My top 20-30 don't move all that much because I like these films a lot and the ratings I have given them are pretty high. Once I have a hundred of these highly rated films it will be a lot more solid list. I can see were you are coming from but my list isn't arbitrary. There is logic behind it and the rankings aren't without meaning.

Although, I do agree my ratings system needs work. The films themselves are in a correct order but the ratings are starting to just become numbers. So, with your comment. Even though it could have been said better, I am going to remove the precise ratings I have been doing. Instead I will stick to "popcorn ratings" and put in on the list in the place I think it should be. So, in a way, I thank you.

Audition is hugely overrated. I thought it was OK, but I've no idea why people love it so or think so highly of it.

Zotis
04-28-14, 10:52 PM
A Nightmare On Elm Street, the original, of course, is a masterpiece of horror filmmaking.

This probably has something to do with why you don't understand why people like Audition so much. Those of us who love Audition don't understand why people like A Nightmare On Elm Street so much. Well that's not exactly true. We do know why. It just comes down to taste. Some people like "entertaining" movies more, and some people like "realistic" movies more.

At least... that's my understanding... however limited it may be.

Well, I'm probably going to watch more of his stuff because I liked Scream and I haven't seen anything elseDefinitely try Nightmare on Elm Street, Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and Wes Craven's New Nightmare - the better films in the entire series of Freddy Kruger films.

Also, Craven's version of The Hills Have Eyes is a bore, I recommend the remake that came out around 2006 and directed by the French director Alexandre Aja who made the Haute Tension/Switchblade Romance film. Far superior in every way in my eyes.

My least favorite so far but I did enjoy it. The space setting felt off at first but the majority of the movie was made up of scenes from the past showing the origins of the box. The film was shown as if someone was explaining the story... if you get what I mean. A man from the distant bloodline of the toymaker who made the box was the one telling the story. The CGI in the film was pretty bad at times though. But I forgive it.

Worth a watch. I'll be watching number 5.

A fantastic Tarantino film with some very memorable quotes and scenes. With brilliant acting and a simple plot which goes into detail, Reservoir Dogs is definitely a favorite of mine. It doesn't make my Top 10 but it does make the higher portion of my Top 100.

A brilliant directorial debut.

This is my favorite horror film so far.

Why not use Letterboxd instead? The diary in Letterboxd is brilliant for this. I've seen 122 this year. Could have done better if it wasn't for a few TV shows and exams.

Mr Minio
04-30-14, 07:55 PM
Yeah, apparently I saw ~50 shorts this year! It's really hard to make out how many full length features would it be, as these shorts' durations vary from 10 to 40+ minutes.

If you watch one film every day it gives you ~365 films a year. It's not much. I watch 2, 3, or even 4 of them a day, but then there's a day, or two when I don't watch any (studies :( ). I've seen ~190 movies so far and assume that I will manage to watch ~400 of them in total this year (I hope to watch them like freakin' maniac in the holiday).

400 films = ~800h (assuming one film lasts two hours, but given how many shorts I watch, it's probably more like one and a half). A year = 8 760 hours. Therefore, I'll happily spend 9% of this year watching movies!

PS: I saw 554 films in 2013. It would be hard to beat this record this year, because I'm studying, which does not take as much time as you'd think, but minus the studying at home, the classes and lectures take a lot of time.

PS2: I feel like Guaporense now with my statistics!

I enjoyed this but I think it will need a second watch like I do with Persona. This film was pretty different to anything I have seen before and I wasn't sure what to think at first. I know what to expect now so I think it will be easier to get into it the second time round. This should mean in theory, I will like it more. The story was very sweet, warm and is very well shot. I am looking forward to watching it again.

The Seventh Seal is a fantastic film which works fantastically well. I liked the music, the story is great and the overall feeling it put upon me is hard to describe. All I must say is if you haven't seen this movie yet I would definitely advise you to watch it. This film has great rewatch value, just like Wild Strawberries has, and again upon rewatch, the rating could definitely increase. Raiders of the Lost Ark is a film I think I may have watched when I was younger. However, I highly doubt I watched it all. My attention span has bad back then and I couldn't remember most of it. This is a fantastic film, a lot better than expected, with great music and is overall super, super great fun. It is very re-watchable and easy watching as long as your attention span isn't like mine when I was 7/8. Hello, top 10!

P.S - I have also watched all or bits from the other films in the main trilogy. I can't remember these either. I'll be watching these in the very near future though.

Brokeback Mountain unfortunately wasn't for me. At least on first watch. I watched it on Netflix not knowing what to expect. I assumed it would be some sort of drama so when I found out that the film is about romance between the two men, I was very surprised, and it did throw me off a little. I have nothing against it, but it's just not something I had seen before in this sort of film. The initial tent scene was like a "WHAT?!" moment for me. I was enjoying the movie until the two men left the mountain. After that, for me it was fairly boring, but I do have to admit I was lost at times. I loved the cinematography though. Especially the shots with the frames full of moving sheep. I will watch this again sometime but I don't know if I will like it all that much the second time either. I don't think the film is for me. I'm not saying it's a terrible film though, because it's not and many, many people love it.

Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom, although not as good as the first movie, it was still great fun and I enjoyed watching it. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the first Indiana Jones movie that I watched. I had no interest in seeing it, but my friends are fans of the series and they were very excited about it, so I tagged along to the cinema with them. Not surprisingly, they hated it, but I loved how ridiculous and hilarious it was. I mean, you've got Shia Lebeouf swinging with monkeys and Harrelson Ford surviving an atomic bomb by hiding in a fridge. How is that not awesome?

Then I watched Raiders and thought it was dull in comparison. I've yet to watch the other two.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a fantastic film. At first I didn't know what to think but it quickly grew on me and I thought that the last 15-20 minutes were pretty amazing. It's a very raw film, it felt a lot more real than any other horror I have seen. The last scene when they're on the road really did amazing me and I thought some of the cinematography was incredible. I will definitely watch this again. I'm very tired and I missed a lot, I think so It's something I need to do, really. Thanks for the suggestion once again Swan. I'm going to sleep now.

Escape Plan(2013,115min)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/5d/Escapeplanfilmposter.jpg/220px-Escapeplanfilmposter.jpg
It was decant movie,I thought they will just hit and shoot at everything but it was not like that.Story was interesting, first prison break was possible,it was explained in a good way,I love when they first escape and then explain how they did it.Second prison looks very unreal and for me that is ok...Sad thing is,first prison break(intro) was better than main story prison break,it was well explained, better planed and imagined. In second prison break it becomes true action movie - shoot, shoot, shoot, kill, kill, kill and we are out.So ok story, second prison break is bad.

Action parts were good,I don't like when main guy kills 100000 soldiers with his gun or some sh*t like that, this movie didn't do that, they did go there near the end but it was ok...So I'm happy with action.

Acting was decant, ofc you need to understand this is action movie so acting is not on same lv as other genre's.Atmosphere was really bad,I never cared about who lives and who dies, they tried to make us fell like they are in prison they suffer etc but its hard to do it with these actors.

And finally verdict: 7/10

Very interesting story, but near the end it gets too complex I think,I can understand what is happening that is not the problem, problem is they could end it on few spots earlier, they just wanted more things to happen.Ending was still interesting.Atmosphere was very good, you care about characters,it keeps you interested, you want to see next scene, you want to find next clue.Acting was ok,nothing special.

Very good movie, very interesting and nerve racking. You kill someone, hide his body in apartment and organize a party, fantastic formula for thriller. His imagination is very good, every movie is same but again VERY different.Murder was well planned and explained, every character is different, everybody reacts to this in a different way.James Stewart is great as always.Atmosphere is great,I love that period of time,it is nice to see everyone in suits. You want to see what will happen next, its fun to search for clues with main guy,I mean that parts when you are like "he will notice it,yes he noticed it!" :)

Gomorrah is a great Italian film which plays over 5 different stories. These stories don't necessarily connect though. They do, in a wider concept, but not directly. The characters don't all meet by the end like in most other multi-strand narrative films. The stories were great and I liked the characters too. This was definitely worth the watch.

Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade is probably the funniest out of the three main films and is in my opinion equal, or slightly better than the second movie. I liked the plot and the final Holy Grail scenes are probably the most memorable from the main trilogy. I will watch number 4 but I'm not particularly excited. For now though, I think the main trilogy is probably my favorite trilogy of all time. I still need to watch the original Star Wars trilogy though. I know, it's pretty bad that I haven't seen it.

That's quite a lot. A girl studying my major complained she's got SO MANY films to watch and then said it's like 80 for her. Haha. I didn't say it's 10 times more for me. It would be awkward. She's not into art cinema as well. Not worth my time.*

I've seen 216 films this year, but then again there's a lot of shorts, so you're probably gonna win this contest.

You're studying film, so you're cheating, because you can watch films and learn at the same time. I can't. Oh, yeah, but I have no life, so I still have a chance to win this.

* Obviously, a joke. She's hot, but into partying, so not my type of a girl, anywayz.

I think that my favourite sports film is Chariots of Fire, but I can't say I've seen a lot of them.

i like watching actual sports, but sports movies are pretty cliché and uncreative. there's always the big pointlessly epic fictional matchup at the end. either the hero wins and its a happy ending or the hero loses and its a tragic ending. or they manufacture something where the hero loses but still wins by getting the girl or whatever. this is probably why i liked Slap Shot (1977), bc it kinda makes fun of that stuff

but even watching real sports has become a tad less interesting over the years. movies have definitely superseded sports as my favorite form of entertainment

anyways, glad you liked Rocky, Rhys :)

By the way, I've made a nice discovery recently. What I mean is that in the city I currently live in there's a cinema that shows arthouse films only. Something stops me from going there, though. Maybe I could meet an arthouse buff, of course female. And hot. And willing to... Oh, that's it. I guess that's the only person I'm gonna meet there is a fat 60 y/o guy. Then again, I could go there, because they show some art movies. Then again, I can watch them alone at home and continue my social awkwardness.

As long as you enjoy what you do it shouldn't matter. I haven't seen all that much arthouse, I don't think. Maybe I should take a look at some of the things on your top 10. I haven't heard of anything, which is intriguing. Anyway, I'm going to unpause Dracula and watch it. I'll need to sleep soon.

All of my experiences in arthouse theaters I've been the youngest person there by 50 years, with the occasional exception of my girlfriend. Not the ideal place to look for that girl, Minio, the internet is where you'll find her!

Even if you know, looking for somebody that takes a keen interest in arthouse cinema, is a girl AND is hot is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Well, the first one is not a must, but how should I expand it other way, if she let's say loves to party and listens to mainstream pop music both of which I don't like.

I really wan't enjoying this at all at first but when I was looking for reasons why I didn't like it I didn't find too many. The acting wasn't great, but it's a 1931 film, it's expected, isn't it? I also wasn't enjoying the story, but it got better and I think that the main dislike for it was the fact I didn't like vampires. Why I didn't like vampires? I just think Twilight. I think I hated on the idea for the sole reason that vampires are popular amongst teen girls. I now don't have any particular dislike for them.

Once the men, Van Helsing and the others, discovered Count is a vampire I thought the film really picked up, they started describing what a vampire is, and some other facts about them. These interested me and I learnt from them. Some of the effects are awful, like very, very bad, even for the time, I think, but this didn't bother me too much. Also, some of the cinematography was pretty great and I was quite impressed. This was a good film. I'll probably watch this again.

While I'd agree that there are some great performances in older films I can see where Rhys is coming from. I think the amount of 'bad' performances is at quite a high ratio, though much of that is just down to their very theatrical nature which is completely different from what we get today. So they can come as quite a culture shock

Anyway just to catch up on some of the recent watches. I'm glad you were so taken with Rocky Rhys, I also love it and have since I was a young un. I also love Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, it's actually my favourite of the series. And Stand by Me is another of my absolute favourites.

I feel like I am disagreeing with you all the time nowadays :p But someone else said to me that he only really liked modern acting and used an example of the acting in Vertigo being terrible today (a laughable statement in my honest opinion), saying that in old films why it may have been good then, it's laughable now. I completely disagree, and just because it's not what you're used to, doesn't mean it's bad. I think its quite an overstatement to suggest that the bad/good ratio is high for old films, because in my opinion it certainly isn't, there's hundreds of 'old performances' I enjoy, maybe you're wathcing the wrong films :p

And I feel like you're really starting to p*ss me off! :D I don't only like modern acting and certainly wouldn't be highlighting Vertigo as an example of terrible performances. While the fact people aren't used to such theatrical performances is certainly part of the reason why they may not like them I personally do think that many of them are bad in terms of being a 'movie performance'. Performances that would have been fine on stage don't always work on screen. And when I said the ratio was high I didn't necessarily mean that it meant there were lots ofbad performances, just that the ratio was higher than the standard today.

agree. some of my favorite performances are of the over-the-top variety, i.e. James Cagney

modern audiences may watch some of Cagney's gangster performances like 'the Public Enemy,' 'Angels With Dirty Faces,' or 'White Heat,' and it may take them off guard, or just seem 'bad' and over-theatrical

on the flip side, there seems to be this perhaps prominent mentality that things should be played realistically onscreen... almost like you'd expect a person to act in real life. but to me that can take the fun out of it. i don't go to movies to watch re-enactments of real life, but rather to experience what i wouldn't see very often in real life

I don't only like modern acting and certainly wouldn't be highlighting Vertigo as an example of terrible performances. While the fact people aren't used to such theatrical performances is certainly part of the reason why they may not like them I personally do think that many of them are bad in terms of being a 'movie performance'. there you have it. now certainly there are poor and overly-theatrical performances. but some of the most memorable ones are overly theatrical. for a modern example, how about Daniel Day-Lewis.

acting today is definitely more realistic. it just depends on how much you care about seeing realistic acting that divides opinions. i personally suppose i prefer modern acting if i had to pick, but older movies can have so much more to offer than just acting that it would be a shame to let a bad performance bother you.

Swan mentioned The Passion of Joan, which is of course a great example of pre-30s film acting. But there's loads of examples, as I say, in both silents and talkies, theatrical and naturalistic. Chaplin, Keaton and Harold Lloyd were masterful comedic performers in their own ways. Off the top of my head, also take a look at Max Schreck in Nosferatu, George O'Brien and Janet Gaynor in Sunrise, Gable and Colbert in It Happened One Night and (this is getting toward the latter end of the 1930s) Bette Davis and Henry Fonda in Jezebel.

I really think that most acting should be taken within the context of a film's overall tone or style. The Big Lebowski is utterly ridiculous from a purely 'realist' standpoint yet it captivates me with its antics. There's more to it than just being a comedy so "anything goes" - it clearly references old noir and screwball comedies (even its title), relying on their tropes to breathe life into its story and characters while also playing with them, spinning them and modernizing them enough to create a fusion or hybrid of old and new.

Also, to misquote Walter: AM I THE ONLY ONE AROUND HERE WHO GIVES A ***** ABOUT IMAGINATION?!?!

Just to be clear when I talked about 'theatrical performances' I wasn't referring to just generally over-the-top performances. In the right film and the right situation I can absolutely love a larger-than-life, outlandish showing. I meant it in the strictest term of the world, as in they are 'of the theatre.' Perhaps stagey would have been a better word to describe them.

I'm referring to the style of acting where every single word is delivered at considerable volume, where every syllable is over-enunciated, where every expression and gesture is wildly exaggerated, where they consistently drop in dramatic pauses etc. It's a style born on the stage in an attempt to connect with those sitting away at the back of the theatre. And on the boards of Broadway or the London West End it may work, but in a film where the camera is never more than 10 feet away from their face, not so much in my eyes. Now it's perhaps understandable when you take into account that most of them (especially the further back we go) learned their craft either on the stage or in silent movies but I just think it comes off as stilted, unnatural, hammy, amateurish and completely lacking in any emotion, completely devoid of any subtelty or minor work with the eyes, expressions, posture etc.

As I said however there are performances in older films that I think are great and that I really like (Jimmy Stewart in a whole bunch of films, the performances in Sunset Boulevard, the work of Jack Lemmon, Clifton Webb in Laura, Henry Fonda in 12 Angry Men and Grapes of Wrath, Alec Guinness in Bridge on the River Kwai etc), just as there are certainly a number of bad performances to be found in modern films. I just think that the number of 'laughable' performances is at a much higher percentage in older films.

The storyline was great, Stallone was great as ever, it's funny at times, fun and it also has it's sad parts. The end fight at least for me, was also better than the first. Rocky II is in my opinion, although only marginally, better than the first.

I must say though that without the first Rocky being so good the second wouldn't have been as good. The first one in a sense is the better film but I preferred the sequel.

I'm going to watch Clockwork again, for the 4th time. I think I will do a lone commentary on it. On this thread. Unless someone wants to join in?

Great movie,I really enjoyed it,it is not all black and white and they showed that.Good acting, good story, very interesting movie. If you love detective movies then it is even better. Some parts were boring but you will forget them very fast because they are very short.

I should really update this thread. I'll do it tomorrow if I remember.

I'm watching a film with swam very soon and then Clockwork straight after. I'll do a lone review for that one.

Dredd is a great film with brilliant cinematography and is very fun. The story is good enough and overall it's just a super fun film to watch, and if you like nice visuals and/or violence, you'll probably like this film.
