From Dusk Till Dawn

(1996, 108 mins)

Robert Rodriguez

https://31.media.tumblr.com/ed48e23d45b7790ea26186ab3de8a433/tumblr_ms3xx2wMaR1szmjmeo1_500.gif

From Dusk Till Dawn was a very funny and good movie but I think it didn't need the twist and I think it could have been better without it. Still I enjoyed this a LOT, the twist didn't ruin it, I still liked it, just like I said if it went on like it did in the first half I would have been better. Loved both Clooney and Tarantino in this and it takes a reasonably high spot in my top 100.

Withnail & I started off very strong, I found it very funny and loved the dark humor. This humor for me dwindled a little towards the second half of the film but it still managed to engage me into the story and I overall enjoyed this quite a lot. I hope to rewatch this again at some point and maybe pick up on a few things I missed.

@Rhys: Too bad you didn't get into Five Easy Pieces. Hopefully you'll appreciate it more over time. I'm glad you liked Submarine, though. That's a great little film!

I also agree mostly with what you said about From Dusk Til Dawn, although I still think it's a bold move to suddenly switch gears like that. I also love the scene that comes right before the twist.

The movie was made in protest of the Serbian government. They purposefully wanted to make it as sick as possible.

That doesn't change the fact that it's a terrible film.

I'm probably going to receive some negativity for this review but here goes..

I watched this film primarily as an extra source for my media exam, my case study is on Action Heroines. The sources have to be within about 5 years. This means I cant use films I really want to use like Kill Bill, Tomb Raider (instead I can talk about the recent videogame) and Alien. I didn't particularly want to watch this due to the ratings but it looked like a great film to use and reference to due to it's high female presence and with it being an action film.

First off I would like to say that the story, although very basic, was perfect for what it was. It also had a very interesting end and the crazy switches between what perceives to be a reality (but not really reality) and insane fantasy was fantastic. This film had three different worlds going on at the same time, and it worked fantastically. Now maybe this film is made for younger generations? I don't know. But as a ex-gamer who primarily loved RPG games, I thought that the fantasy world was pretty darn epic.

Now the visually, holy moly, yeah, wow. That's basically the perfect was to describe the beautiful cinematography and CGI. I don't normally like CGI taking over but Sucker Punch is definetaly the exception to the rule.

Sucker Punch is an insanely good movie, I'm going to go against the masses and give this love because I think this is what it deserves. Sure, the film lacks character development, but it doesn't matter, the characters are likeable enough for me, that even though the main focus of this film is viusally that I am going to give this a full rating.

Bring the hate.

Beetlejuice is a funny film with an interesting concept but unfortunately doesn't prove to be likable throughout, and some aspects of the story weren't interesting - for me. I think that there is nothing particularly special about the two main protagonists as characters. I much preferred Beetlejuice himself (played by Micheal Keaton), but this is probably a given. I also liked Lydia (Winona Ryder) much more than the protagonist characters. However, this was indeed a fun movie and it does have some memorable quotes.

Citizen Kane has a very high status in the world of cinema, ranked by many as the greatest American film of all time and I can see why.

Although not my personal favorite; Citizen Kane is yet another masterpiece I have had the pleasure to watch. With fantastic (and I truly mean fantastic) cinematography and a powerful story and end, with beautiful quotes and memorable characters, this film is near perfect.

Citizen Kane I find with most people, myself included, seems to be less of a personal masterpiece and more of a historical masterpiece. I think it was Bogdanovich, when discussing Sunrise and it's comparison to Kane, that the same rules applied. Sunrise was a collection of silent film ideas, (Soviet Montage, German Expressionism, German Kammerspiel, French Impressionism, etc.), boiling down to a pure essence and becoming a collection of techniques in a solitary film. Citizen Kane works in a similar fashion, boiling down previous ideas into a single, sharp point. (Which even Bogdanovich points out again, the whole "seeing ceilings" was probably taking from John Ford in Stagecoach, and since Welles studied this film so avidly before production, it most definitely made an impression). Bottom line, don't feel alone in your assessment Rhys, I think you feel how most people feel about the topic. (I also feel the same way with Hitchcock's Vertigo, many claim it's his personal best when I've always been partial to Rear Window because I felt it was Hitchcock's most personal film, rather than a "personal best", which is far more interesting... to me anyway.)

Spartacus is my fifth Kubrick film and has once again proved that he is one of the greatest directors to have lived. This film has now secured his place as my all time favorite director. Epics have never had appeal for me, but I saw this in HMV looking all snazzy in a special, limited edition blu-ray case and I had to buy it. I got home and watched it straight away and expected to be baffled by the context, mass of characters, script and length and lose track of where I was due to my lack of a long attention span. I was wrong. I immersed myself in the story and understood what was going on for the entirety of the story. This alone has "inspired me" to watch more epics in the near future.

Thank you once again Stanley Kubrick.

Mean Streets

Again, most character study type films don't seem to work for me all that well. Although this film has some great acting it just didn't click for me. I found it boring for the most-part and didn't really care for what was happening. I want to rewatch this sometime though, maybe I can learn to appreciate these films more in the future.

Requiem for a Dream

Requiem for a Dream is a powerful film about drug-addition and the problems that can be caused though drugs. With a beautiful soundtrack, incredible cinematography and great acting especially coming from Jared Leto; Requiem for a Dream has once again impressed me.

Fun Fact: with my Film Exam on Thursday we have three sections to answer and Section B is called "Popular Film and Emotional Response". I will be given a question that relates to techniques used in film to provoke response and my main focus is on the use of music and cinematography. Obviously this film fills both of those good uses of technique. My other film is Donnie Darko. I might find a third, but it isn't completely necessary.

Personally, I love Mean Streets, it feels a lot like cinematic "Free Jazz"-"Italian Style". Personally, in my own cinematic journey's, I've found that after awhile I got tired of the "Hollywood Style". There's nothing wrong with it, although the problem I had was once you've seen enough of it, "The Invisible Style" just got boring. To the point where explosions and war couldn't even salvage it. (Don't get me wrong here though, I still love a good old-fashion Hollywood-Style film, but now, since my split from it, I'm willing to try just about anything, and actually what I found in doing so was I appreciated everything a lot more, including Hollywood films). I really salute you Rhys, you seem to be trying a bit of everything and while not compromising your vision of what does and doesn't work for you in a film. I guess the only thing I have to add to this is, even if your initial convictions on a movie weren't so hot, try coming to it years later... you may end up surprising yourself. Movies and religion are the same to me in many ways, and one of the most profound was how I view films a lot like how the Talmud Scholars view the Torah. If you view a film, it can have one interpretation at a moment... but on coming back to that same film a bit later that interpretation may change entirely, and what you find is that opinion changes as well. I think you'll find yourself in the same position as well someday, (if you're not already there). Oh, and to conclude this, I too once found myself at odds with Mean Streets, for about the same reasons. Now it sits firmly on my DVD/Blu-Ray self, and I'm not ashamed to have it ready to go at any moment when I want to pull it off the shelves. :D

Thank you, I definetaly enjoy exploring all forms of cinema and I am looking forward to discovering new things that I will find interest in. I will definetaly come back to Mean Streets in the future and hopefully my views on it will change.

I am going to try something that I have wanted to try before. The new year starts tomorrow and with me being a film student at college and hopefully starting a film course in September at university I want to set myself a challenge to watch at least one film every single day that I haven't seen before until 1st January 2015.
Khan - June - Started 2nd February

[COLOR=Blue]1st June - Oceans Twelve (125 mins)
2nd June - The Chronicles of Narnia: Part One (143 mins)
3rd June - The Chronicles of Narnia: Part Two (150 mins)
4th June - The Chronicles of Narnia: Part Three (113 mins)
5th June - Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (143 mins)
6th June - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest (151 mins)
7th June - Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (169 mins)
8th June - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (136 mins)
9th June - Clash of the Titans (106 mins)
10th June -

How can someone sit through 4 days in a row of Pirates of the Caribbean? I mean the first 1 was good, the 4th was a cash grab and the 2 in between were ok at best.

Ill say it for you Rhys. The central relationship is intriguing but thats not nearly enough to carry a film where the director and actor think the main character is far more cool than he actually is. The editing is very distracting as well. You might be able to chalk some of that up to time period but there are plenty of older films I dont feel that way about. 2

Personally, I love that film. The French New Wave artists were all about style-over-content, (for the most part anyway), and Godard was perhaps the most radical in that regard. So, all I have to say about your approach to that film, is to keep that in mind. Try to enjoy the film for the "aesthetics" of editing and mise-en-scene, (especially editing). Let go of conceptions of "content/script". If you do that, you'll probably enjoy it a lot more.

I wouldn't say forget about it. I know your joshing around, but cinema can be more than a narrative. Cinema can be whatever it wants to be as long as you find pleasure in it for whatever reasons are personal to you. To me cinema is narrative and non-narrative, and all things in between. Each film offers something different, even bad films which offer insights on what not to do. I just love cinema, for all cinema.

More without glamorizing the violence. Although many war films do make war seem "cool" at times although still usually pretty tragic.

Most war films glamorize war. Any film involving combat against "the enemy" and where the audience is supposed to feel visceral pleasure is watching the main characters and the forces of the main character's country to kick the enemy's ass glamorizes war. Movies like this:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f4/Pearl_Harbor_OST_Front_Cover_Amazon.jpg

Movies that do not glamorize war are movies that usually do not involve significant amount of combat against the enemy or shows it in a completely critical way, movies like Grave of the Fireflies, Apocalypse Now, The Human Condition Trilogy, Downfall, Das Boot. Full Metal Jacket, etc. They are rare and usually rank high in best war films list so that you, who watches mostly acclaimed films, will tend to watch the few war films that do not glamorize war.

There are millions of anime titles like Sucker Punch, action with female heroines, in fact it's obvious that Snyder watched many of those (specially the least sophisticated ones) before making this movie.

But as a ex-gamer who primarily loved RPG games, I thought that the fantasy world was pretty darn epic.

As a big fan of PC games I also noticed the "game" feel of this movie. Since I like games this wasn't a problem.

Bring the hate.

rating_5

I though it was a very entertaining movie. It's not as good as 300 but it's pretty fun to watch. I would rate it as 3 (maybe 3_5) because it did not provide me with a strong emotional connection but I found very few movies as entertaining as this CGI action fest.

Bicycle Thieves; is a beautiful story of a man; Antonio, who has his bicycle stolen. This bicycle is very important, it is necessary for the upkeep of his family as it is a necessity for his new job that he had been recently been given. The majority of the story overviews him and his son; Bruno, looking for the bike which turns into a mini emotional adventure which leads to a fantastic and again, emotional ending. This film, like Paths of Glory (the film I watched earlier today) makes my top 10 with ease.

The Oxford History of World Cinema - Another good textbook on Film History, though it is a bit political and definitely has its bent, all the same, it's still a great read.

A History of Narrative Film - This one is another good read on broad Film History, but I personally find it talks more about aesthetics, and the theory behind said aesthetics, more than the other two.

(then as far as Film "Form" is concerned)...you can't go wrong with:

Film Art: An Introduction

and

Cinematic Storytelling

What one lacks, the other one gains, and vise-versa, in both cases, their great starting points into more "advanced" and even "common" film practices. Again, I'd highly recommend it.

I personally have found that in reading these books, I've developed a more critical "cinematic eye". They taught me what to look for, like "the why's of what does or doesn't work, and the why's of why I think something may work but someone else may not." Also adding in a Historical Context for certain films made me enjoy them even more. Some films are historical, for example, because they bring a new political idea or aesthetic to the table, in knowing this, I've found I really enjoy the film a lot more.

Anyway, I hope this helps you along your cinematic journeys! Happy viewings and readings!

-Not Bad at all but very slow ..... the development is very too slow for me unfortunately. The Idea and the concept are great but the first 55 minutes is a complete snoozefest and it's not very scary at all so it's definitely not a movie i'm gonna rewatch .

For my money, that's why I like Audition. It's a slow burn. It builds to this climax for about an hour and then from that point on the torture sequence is so methodical that I myself feel like I'm apart of the process. It feels a lot like a meditation on violence more than anything else, and as a spectator I feel I'm stuck with a moral/ethical dilemma. On one hand I've been enjoying the thrills up to the point of its climax, on the other hand, when the sadistic element is finally introduced, somehow I'm not as repulsed as I'd thought I'd be. Is this because I've been conditioned for that moment for about an hour? Or does it have something to do with the darker side of being human? That element of "not being able to look away from the wreckage"? In the realms of personal ethos I personally find the film to be a fascinating dissection on man's in humanity to man. I think in my own logs, if I recall correctly, I rated it 5/5.

For yesterday the movie I watched was Dario Argento's Deep Red.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/03/Profondo_Rosso_poster.jpg/220px-Profondo_Rosso_poster.jpg
It was a masterfully directed horror movie that achieves everything it has to do. It's cold, the horror scenes are directed in an excellent way. Very fast editing in those scenes, a lot of fast traveling towards David Hemmings almost as if the camera was hunting him. To me in his genre it's one of the best, I don't understand why Halloween is renoun in the genre and that this one is almost never talked about. Nonetheless, I'm not the biggest horror movie fan it really has to be special for me to adore an horror film (Rosemary's Baby, Shining ,etc.), it is not as good as those, bt I wold definitely recommend it to an horror fan.

Yes, I did like it a lot, but I forgot to mention a little detail that bothered me a little bit. The score was great, but not for the good movie, What I mean is that for a western or an action film it would be great, but not in a horror film and specially not every time the killer is there. The song is not scary at all, it had the complete opposite effect on me, I was less scared because of it. (It doesn't make the movie bad at all, it's still great)

And for the movie of today I just watched

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/69/F_for_Fake_poster.jpg/220px-F_for_Fake_poster.jpg

That's a total masterpiece. It's a unique movie it's not totally a documentary, but it's not a totally normal movie either. It's a reflection on art, how we should concentrate on the art itself more than on the one who made it. I learned a lot on the Howard Hughes story, I didn't know his story at all! And the whole paradox between the fake and the real painting is really interesting. If the painting is exactly the same why should it more valuable, more praised if it's made by Manet then by Mike from Wisconsin. Also, Orson Welles is one of the most charismatic man I've seen on the camera he really attracts the attention of the viewer the second he's on the screen. Everytime he talks in the film it's captivating and very intelligent. The editing is also really impressive. There are some footage, but there are also some really face paced and beautifully directed scenes. Also, the last 17 minutes of the film which I will not spoil are brilliant. Loved, loved, loved that film I highly suggest it!

If you get a chance, (if you have not already), watch Barry Lyndon. In my opinion its one of the most highly underrated masterpieces in cinema, (in my experience). It came out during the Jaws and Star Wars years, (the Age of the Blockbuster, not saying those are bad films, I actually love both of them dearly), but they overshadowed Lyndon. Lyndon is more of a slow dissection, and what appears on the surface as beautiful, (the cinematography is perhaps the best in his oeuvre), the nature in which human beings treat one another is quite rotten and cold, (to put it mildly). For me, it's one of Kubrick's best films, and since you're going through his body of work I'd definitely recommend it.

The Matrix Reloaded

June 19 2014
(138 minutes)

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Film/Pix/pictures/2008/06/06/matrixreloaded460.jpg

It's been sometime since I watched The Matrix Trilogy over again. On last glance, I thought the first installment was solid, and the subsequent films (such as Reloaded and Revolutions), became bigger disasters as each installment proceeded. (I also remember not being the only one who felt this way at the time, and in some sense, that validated the "critical-side" of me as I began doing reviews around the same period). Now watching it all again, from beginning to end, (in short order now), I think I'm beginning to understand why the latter films don't hold up. It's not that these films don't have ideas, on the contrary, the problem seems to be having too many ideas.

Reloaded seems to ask the audience to not only hold onto the existential philosophical questions of the first one, but add more existential philosophical questions within this film, (and it wouldn't surprise me if the next installment added any more, but I'll be watching that one soon). Treat these "questions/ideas" as balls that the audience needs to juggle. At the same time, these things in which you juggling, (for my money), are not quite formed to begin with and as time is going on you're encountering more of them. And then there comes a point where you're beginning to ask, "Why am I juggling this ill-formed 'non-sense" and then comes the time whereby I'm getting frustrated because they've shifted gears from "Great Existential Action Flick" to "Now we're bringing Werewolves and Ghosts into the Mix? Sure because when I think of Kierkegaard and Sartre the first thing that comes to my mind is Stephen King." I don't fault the film for having too many ideas, I suppose its much better than having no ideas. The fault comes, for me anyway, having an idea, (which even in the first film I never thought was fleshed out really well), and not forming it well enough, and more to that point, sticking with that idea. In that regard they should have left well enough alone with the first installment and just dropped the trilogy idea.

HOWEVER what I will credit this film for, is that it improves substantially, I feel, on already existing ideas within the Action genre. To Live and Die in LA is an example, if for nothing else you watch that film for the "Backwards on the LA Freeway", the problem though is that the shots seem cumbersome, (which is probably true), and there is less of a rhythm and pace to that particular sequence by today's standards. In watching Reloaded they gave that concept a big time adrenaline shot, not only is there more of a rhythm and pace, but for my money the action is better because they could do more with the technology they had. Also, these films have taken much from the Shaw Brothers fare and I've felt for many years they improved upon already existing techniques, (I suppose it's as they say, we're all standing on the shoulders of giants).

So that's the good and the bad of it all. I think it's definitely watchable, and definitely re-watchable. 4/5 For me, and that's a bit hard for me to conclude because on some levels I don't think it deserves that, but on other levels I think it does.

I wanted to watch a movie I knew I loved and I was served. It was even better than in my memory it's gritty, funny, intelligent and it shows a darker side of the human nature. Lancaster and Curtis give both the best performence of their career (or at least of the movies I've seen them in). I'll do a full review of the film eventually, I just wanted to give my quick toughts on the films. The Fault in our Stars was a LOT better than first expected. I haven't read the book (yet) so some of the things that happened in the film surprised me greatly (I'm not spoiling it for anybody but the plot is very clever). The acting was fantastic; it was believable and the characters were likeable. The cinematography wasn't anything super special, but it was still better than the average film. I enjoyed this very much and the film did manage to trigger some pretty strong emotions at times (not gonna' lie).

Really interesting documentary on the making of Apocalypse Now and how this movie is something more than the average movie. Coppola put himself and the cast in the mood that the soldiers were during the vietnam war. The time it took to release the film, the problems with Brando being over weight and overpaid, Martin Sheen's heart attack during shooting, etc. It just makes the movie even more special I recommend it for everyone who loves Apocalypse Now!

Marwencol is a very personal film to me, so personal that I've had to watch it over the course of a couple days. For most people, I think they would find this film to be average, and in some sense it is, but because it was about a man dealing with personal struggles and trying to reclaim a "lost life", it really moved me to tears at times. For people who've been there, they know what our main character, Mark, is talking about. What this film shows is the tragedy, yes, of losing one life... the struggles, to reclaim it... but also the hope of what lies beyond it. Powerful documentary, and definitely would watch again when I need a pick me up.

I didn't realize that this was a challenge. I just thought that some people were trying to watch at least one movie every day, and I was just enjoying reading about all of the movies that other people watch.

It will probably get challenging when the new TV season starts. I usually watch one or two movies every night, but once the new TV season starts, I get backed up on movies because of all the TV shows that I watch, and sometimes I just don't have time for a movie at the end of the night.

Sometimes the hardest part is just deciding which movie to watch? A new movie that I've never seen before? A movie that I've seen before that I want to learn more about? Or maybe just a musical or a comedy that I can just sit back and enjoy?

Decisions, decisions, decisions... :dizzy:

The Matrix Revolutions

(129 minutes)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v642/shakespeares_sister/shakes6/neosmiths.jpg

And here in the last review I accused The Matrix of having too many ideas, (that as you recall, I felt were rather unformed)... In the final installment of The Matrix, I'm going to accuse Revolutions of not having enough ideas. At least in the prior two installments I could say the first one felt like "an action flick with brains" the second one felt like "a better action flick than before, but a muddled mind" the third one did really even succeed as an action flick... it felt like every other action flick I'm exposed to, and no amount of bullets flying and people dying could make me care for this. The ending felt somewhat predictable. What's worse, if you watch the second one, (which I do feel offers something to the table in terms of action), I feel it's almost obligating people to watch this installment. I think for my own sake, I'll always love the first film, I'd study the second film for action... but leave the third one alone unless I want to examine what not to do in an action flick.

This is a fun, and somewhat inspiring, little documentary on one of my all time favorite films, Night of the Living Dead. George A. Romero seems like an all around nice guy. The film itself doesn't have anything "new" or "revolutionary" to add to the table, but as a film buff its nice to see other film buffs talk about films and making films. Wouldn't recommend this film to people not already into the film, and even more so, people who aren't film junkies... but for people who are, I'd say the film offers something decent for you. Again, not great film making, but passable and enjoyable.

I see why it's praised, the filmmaking is beautiful exemples would be the use of mirrors and reflections that are really beautiful, the landscape are gorgeous and the editing is really fast particularly at the end there's a very beautifully edited scene. But other than that the movie was blend to me, I'm really a character guy and I didn't care for both main characters in this film. There's also a second or third sens that I didn't understand so I don't say it' bad, but I didn't really enjoy it.

Derek Luke and Lucas Black are also pretty good. We feel the energy of the city behind the football team during all the movie and I love that. I'm going to be honest about my situation within the last couple of days, and my experience with films. I'm on a heavy dose of anti-psychotics, anti-manics, boat loads of mood stabilizers, a ton of anti-anxiety medications and how I'm at all able to wake up in the morning these last couple days is a bit of a shock to me. (It's definitely summer, the manic season). So within my last reviews, I've felt I've have been really unclear, and for that I apologize... but you know why. All told, I did enjoy this film. Really enjoyed it actually. I'm certain it's conveying a message under normal circumstances I would understand... but since my brain is numb at the moment. I just have to go with, "I liked it". And keep that as it is until I can see it again under better circumstances.

I loved it! I'm a huge anime fan and I really thought it wouldn't be good since it's a shojo. Generally a shojo is a manga or an anime written for teenage girls that like good looking emo guyz and that tries to seduce them. It's full of clichés and generally has a stupid plot. This one actually takes these conventions (with the premise of 2 little girls, etc.) and they break those conventions by having an absolutely beautiful desing in the maze really the opposite of what shojo usually looks like. Also there as the movie goes there is some serious issues that are being discussed, actually I'd even call them philosophical issues. Really intelligent and interesting anime, thanks to Guap for the suggestion. I'd probably be watching the second movie later today.

Out of a total of nine shorts, only about two of them impressed me to some degree, but that's not saying much. Even the ones that did, I found myself saying, "I've seen this art style before". And since said art styles are limiting themselves within the confines of a story that, (in my opinion), was as solid as mud to begin with, it seems it's an uphill battle for each artist to identify what are the rules and protocols by which they can construct their vision. Not my cup of tea... especially when the styles in each of these one offs have been done much better in past experience.

A fascinating documentary, though I can't help feel to some degree it started with a little bent, but then again if it didn't have that bent, I don't think it would have been as fascinating as it was. It starts out interviewing children as children, but then when it gets more into the real realities of social class. How one is more privileged than the other. It becomes a great introspection on race, class wars, (without a real "social struggle"), it just documents what is. I'm about to watch the next installment and I can't wait!

It's actually not a bad movie. It's not just some stupid teen movie there are some themes (the role of the women, the different social roles in New York city (Manhattan being richer and the place where Travolta lives poorer and how Stephanie kind of look in derision at the place she grew up in) I also liked the idea of something in which your good (in that case dancing) that makes you someone for a certain moment, we often determine ourelve by our job and that movie reminds us that there's more than that to life. It's sure that there was some cliché, but I still really enjoyed it!

To be honest, I wasn't impressed by this next installment in the "Up" Series, and I probably won't like the others, but I'm willing to keep an open mind. What they set out to do was accomplish in the first 40 minute installment, and while people change, we almost take for granted that change within people, social class, race, life really doesn't change all that much. So in this sense we're just going over the same subject matter over again, and that's what makes this installment a bit uninteresting.

It's the most light hearted Woody Allen movie I've seen yet. It was pretty good, but nothing like his best work. He wasn't aiming for the same thing, it's more a comedy that has some hints of social criticism (huge vegetables, oral sex degrees, etc. lol). Salesman is a profound statement of the door-to-door Salesman Era coming to a close. Documenting improve-style, (cinema verite), the Maysles Brothers seem to capture a fading lightning in a jar. We're focused on Paul, (also known as the Badger), as he and his group go door-to-door and ruthlessly push expensive Bibles to people who can't afford them. When the Maysles Brothers are in these houses with the Salesmen doing their work... there's a tension. It's almost as if you say to yourself that the Lord shouldn't be pushed this way onto anyone. It's almost like witnessing someone commit a sin with each push toward selling overpriced Bibles. In such a way, it comments more than just the soon by-gone days of the door-to-door Salesmanship, (and you can see why), but it also seems to comment on American-religious values. A fascinating picture, and would watch again.

After seeing this film, I'm a bit speechless. The overall "theme" would be "a life unbalanced", (as the movie's Hopi name implies and is described at the end)... but it's more than this. Yes, "a life unbalanced" is the central theme... but there seems to be many themes within a theme, and those smaller themes adding to a bigger theme have even smaller ideas combining itself into one massive whole that by the end of the film I literally felt I hadn't had a chance to breathe within an hour and thirty minutes. Fantastic work! It is a must re-visit for me.
