-One hell of a good horror movie! Very nice recommendation by ''MovieGal''. Daniel Radcliffe is excellent in his role (very different of Harry Potter) , the storyline is a pretty nice concept very well executed , the directing by Mr.Watkins is very good and the visual of the british lanscape are incredible. The slow and silent mood during all the movie is also a great aspect. Brief , I recommend it .

- This movie is AWESOME. One of the best thriller i've seen in 2000's and certainly a new favorite of mine. Paul Walker and Steve Zahn are both excellent in their respective role of The Brothers Thomas and it's such a shame that Paul Walker died so young he was very talented. It was scary and very stressful movie. In my opinion , one of the most underrated of all time. If , you didn't see it I definitely recommend it to you... It's completely amazing

History of The World: Part 1 is a funny film but with my lack of knowledge of history (which is probably bad of me) I probably missed a lot of the jokes. Either way I did enjoy it. I just didn't love it.

I wouldn't be psyched about a sequel to that. It's rare to hit paydirt twice.
Invastion of the Body Snatchers - 1956 - wasn't totally for me. But then again I am having a very off day. 3+
I'll watch it again sometime.
My instincts tell me not to give you rep for that, but I will. :p

Yeah, it's still very impressive. :p

Most of the cuts are laughably obvious, why don't we move the camera directly into an object for a second, then movie it back to the same general positioning; then sometimes there's just a hard cut with no disguise! Not a bad movie, and the takes are still long enough for minio to masturbate during, but Hitchcock said it was an experiment and a failure, which is true about the attempted hiding.

- Impressive wow ! A Masterpiece of horror in my opinion. The Mood is creepy and very well done and The Make-Up are absolutely perfect . The Soundtracks especially ''Bad Moon Rising'' are awesome. The acting is more than very good and the storyline is amazing (I very like the transformation of the Werewolf).Definitely a new movie in my top 150.

I'll be watching the birds today also.

Rope is a good starting point for Hitchcock, but try to get to the "Big Four" - Psycho, Rear Window, North by Northwest and Vertigo - ASAP. Then start exploring everything else. I don't like The Birds much personally, hasn't aged well at all and seems more funny now than anything else. My favourite of the rest is probably either Rebecca or Dial M for Murder, but Vertigo is my fav overall.
Daniel M
07-28-14, 01:50 PM
What Skepsis said, I think Rope is good but not great. I know a lot of people on here would include it among Hitchcock's best though :)
Cobpyth
07-28-14, 01:54 PM
The Birds is probably my least favorite Hitchcock film, possibly on par with I Confess.
The Rope is a pretty good movie, though. Glad you liked it! ;)
Skepsis is right. Watch the "big four" first (Vertigo is my favorite)! After those four, you'll probably be in love with Alfred and you'll only want more.
My personal favorite besides those 4 is Notorious. Most of his '40s and '50s work is great, though. Strangers on a Train, Shadow of a Doubt, Spellbound, Rebecca, Dial M For Murder, To Catch a Thief, The Man Who Knew Too Much, etc. They're all enjoyable and the ones in bold are even great films!
From the '30s, I would definitely recommend The 39 Steps (his best from the '30s) and The Lady Vanishes too.
Marnie is also watchable and it stars Sean Connery.
As you can see, I'm a big Hitchcock fan. It's probably the first director whose filmography I seriously started studying.
Skepsis93
07-28-14, 02:02 PM
Forgot about Notorious, I like that one as well. There's things about To Catch a Thief I really like too, and Rope is pretty good, though far from my favourite.
Daniel M
07-28-14, 02:02 PM
When I first watch The Birds I was a little bit underwhelmed by the ending, but the more I think about it, the more I appreciate it. Great direction and suspense as we expect.
I'd rank Hitchcock something like:
Psycho
North by Northwest
Vertigo
Notorious
Rear Window
Shadow of a Doubt
To Catch a Thief
Dial M For Murder
The Birds
The 39 Steps
Strangers on a Train
The Lady Vanishes
Rope
The Man Who Knew Too Much (56)
I didn't love Rear Window like some do (but I still think it's near-great), but I get a chance to re watch it tonight at the cinema :)
To Catch a Thief I should maybe put higher, not anything great on the level of his top work, but a personal favourite, charming film and I love Grant and Kelly.
I'll watch Notorious instead through your advise. I'm watching a film with my mum and shes seen the rest and doesn't like to rewatch films. I'll watch them soon myself though.
Thanks for the info guys! :)

I see it's ranking time. I'll join in. I'll work in categories again (within categories the films are not in order), as usual:
League of its own:
Vertigo - Very special and unique movie
Masterpiece:
Rear Window - Perfectly executed.
Brilliant:
Notorious - Lovely directed and an intriguing story.
Psycho - One of the most influential films ever made and a shocker.
Rebecca - Grand, haunting motion picture.
North by Northwest - Epic Spy thriller/mystery.
Strangers on a Train - Intense film with a very interesting premise.
Shadow of a Doubt - Creepy, cool and Joseph Cotten's best role!
Dial M for Murder - An extremely clever film that looks great and blows the viewer's mind with its sense of detail.
Fantastic:
Spellbound - Intriguing film that features one fantastic dream sequence (executed by Salvador Dali himself) and a freaking fantastic ending! The story has its flaws, though.
The 39 Steps - Classic "on the run" film with a great sense of humor and an awesome twist at the end.
Really good:
Rope - Cool experiment with an intriguing story and some good performances.
Marnie - Weird picture that doesn't work for everybody, but it does for me. Sean Connery is in a Hitchcock film!.
To Catch a Thief - I love the Côte d'Azur.
Good:
The Man Who Knew Too Much - Not a bad film, but it drags a little in the end.
The Lady Vanishes - Good '30s film with a mindblowing concept, but it has its flaws.
The Wrong Man - Interesting film and Scorsese's favorite Hitchcock film, but it's a little too "small" for my tastes. I like Hitchcock more when he does something bigger.
OK:
The Birds - Creepy, but also sometimes laughably bad. It has a certain campiness to it that some people might find attractive, though.
I Confess - OK film, but the concept could've been executed more intriguingly.

Cobpyth, which parts of The Birds are laughably bad? :(
Let's just say that, in some sequences, the birds don't really look convincing. :p
The story itself is also just not that interesting. It's plain horror and disaster. I do admit that it has its good, genuinely creepy weird moments, but I found myself laughing at other moments just as well.
The ending was also pretty anticlimactic and dissatisfying, in my opinion. One of the best things about Hitchcock films are usually their endings and that special quality was completely lacking in The Birds.
That said, I do need to watch it again sometime. It's probably been over three years since I've last watched it. Maybe something will click and I'll find some new meanings to the film or a certain love for specific scenes.
So far, it's the only true Hitchcock classic that I don't really consider as a 'good film'.

- An horror masterpiece no doubt about it. The acting is pretty good especially from Ashley Laurence who give one hell of a good performance imo. The Storyline is awesome with ''Frank'' the undead who kill people to take their bloods and the many different creepy monsters (Pinhead , Butterball ,etc.). Great directing from Clive Barker and very good ending of the movie. I love it .

The casting is sensational (Foxx , DiCaprio , Waltz , L Jackson ,etc.), the storyline is very interesting and violent like good old western movie and the directing is great like usual with Tarantino. I know I'm in the minority too but I think my favourite might be The World's End. Hot Fuzz might be a whole lot of fun, but there's something touching about the slightly cynical and pessimistic look at humans that makes The World's End very effective.
Cobpyth
07-31-14, 11:55 AM
The World's End is also my favorite Edgar Wright film (I like all four of them). I can see why huge fans of action movies would prefer Hot Fuzz, though.
The last film of the cornetto trilogy is the most ambitious of them all, in my opinion. It decides to end on a lighter note like all of Wright's films (and I still think he should've had the balls to end the film earlier, but I guess it's just not his style), but it's so much darker in content than his other movies. It has more dramatic poignancy, but at the same time it has just as much comical value as the other ones. Great flick!

Shane (118 minutes) A pretty good western, I don't know what's so special about it, it's pretty much your typical all american western, I think I prefer spaghetti western un general because at least there is an ironic tone which make it funnier to watch.
Underground (163 minutes) Excellent movie, the ending really makes it more special. I really like Kusturica's style I will watch more of his movies.

61* (129 minutes) I loved that not because of the direction, but because I love baseball and particularly the history of baseball and I larned a lot about it. The only thing I knew was that Maris beat Ruth and that the fan were cheering for Mantle. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of Barry Pepper and Thomas Jane, I'd suggest that to any baseball fan.

L'emmerdeur (80 minutes) It never watch movies on TV, never I think it's the first time I did since 3 or 4 years, but I was curious because it was a movie written by Francis Veber that made my favorite comedy (Le dîner de cons) starring the great belgian singer Jacques Brel and also Lino Ventura so I watched it and it was great. It's really a typical Francis Veber script with the idiot who continuously pisses off the guy who has something to do.

I am going to try something that I have wanted to try before. The new year starts tomorrow and with me being a film student at college and hopefully starting a film course in September at university I want to set myself a challenge to watch at least one film every single day that I haven't seen before until 1st January 2015.
I will use this thread to track my progress and to talk about the films I have watched. If you want to suggest a film for me to watch then please, feel free to do so. Thank You!
I will be listing every film I have watched that day including films that I have watched before. I will also be stating the amount of minutes the film runs for so I can add it all up at the end of the year.
The Sci-Fi Slob will also be doing this. I'll post his list here too.
WOW good luck!!! I wish I had time for that :)
10/08/2014 - Dial M for Murder - fantastic film! Blew me away! 4.5+

One of my favourites. :yup: I love that film.
12/08/2014 - Dead Poets Society - I liked this but I didn't love it. Robin Williams was of course great in it and I liked some of the quotes but this just wasn't really my thing it would seem. Still a good movie. 3.5-
13/08/2014 - The Princess Bride - very sweet film, I enjoyed it a lot even though it is quite silly - rating_3_5-

Okay, I am back from holiday now which means I will gradually update this thread. I have updated my films up to the end of last month so far and will due more after I get back from expedition which starts on Monday and ends Friday. I will be watching films on my phone again (sorry) from the Tuesday to the Thursday. These will be animated films like last time.
I got my A level results yesterday. I got exactly what I wanted and they secured me a place at Sheffield Hallam university to do Film Studies. This starts on the 17th of September.
Khan has now dropped out of the challenge, this was a few days ago and I will update all the films he has watched and posted up to that time.
Thank you all so far for following me. Today's film is a big one..... RAGING BULL.
Congratulations, Rhys! Good to hear.

I never got the love for that film. It's OK, but I don't see what's so great about it.
It's NEVER subtle, the character arcs are overcooked and the multiple stand alone scenes never really add up to a beautiful whole, in my opinion.
Norton is fantastic, but the movie is merely solid.
Glad you enjoyed it so much, though, Rhys! :)
17/08/2014 - second film - Mr's Doubtfire - a very fun and heartwarming film which I enjoyed very much. 4-
Currently watching "Down by Law". I will review on Friday as my expedition starts today.

I will also try start updating soon after the expedition. :)

I don't understand the love for American History X either, it's so overdone and forced in its message, and I don't think it's consistent or well made enough for it to be carried well and effect me as much as it could have in the end. Mrs. Doubtfire I think is a decent little comedy, but nothing great.
American History X is good but it's definitely overrated in my opinion.

And yesterday, August 28th:
Damien: Omen II (1978) - 107 min.
A sequel of my favourite movie about the Antichrist! I didn't like it that much, it's much more predictable and less exciting and original than the first one. I will still watch the third just because I want to complete the trilogy, but nothing like the first one.

29/08/2014 - Cheap Thrills - 2013 (88 min)
A rich couple put 2 friends through a series of twisted dares to win huge sums of money.
It's a shocking and sick film about how far can you go for money... The acting is great and the psychology beneath it is impressive! Also, it has a touch of dark humour that makes it a really intense experience.
I was honestly suprised.

I was never a sci-fi fan. However, this is more than a movie, it's a life changing experience...
The way Kubrick uses the soundtrack (being music or just the sound of breathing) is probably the best in the entire history of the cinema, the all idea behind it is mesmerizing and inovative, the way it is shooted is brilliant... Everything goes beyond genious...
Kubrick lived 500 hundred years ahead of its time and it is in my opinion the best director that ever lived.
I can only ask why I waited so long to watch this?

Well said, sir. I actually think "2001" remains as one of the most technically adept, complete, and accomplished works in all of cinema.
It amazes me that Kubrick managed to get away with making such an unconventional, ambitious film. That'd never happen in today's studio system.

Try Bully; basically the same movie except way more adult.
Yeah, Bully is great. Really makes me feel odd after watching it. Seen it twice now.

Just so you know guys I know I am long overdue updating the main page and I am almost 2 months behind. I think I may do some updating today if I get time to do it. I've been going out a fair bit due to fresher's and haven't had a lot of time to focus on the updating element.

It's 893 for me.

I would say about 380ish yeah but I haven't updated fully yet - I'll do some updates now. That's a LOT of films!

Point Break at the cinema. Sadly, I missed it when it came out and so have never seen it on the big screen. I'm not Jaws jealous or anything, but it is damn cool.
Hey Rhys. You sure watch a lot of films. There's one film I want you to see...
*Forces Rhys into a chair and straps him down*
It's called Jack and Jill!
*Rhys dies while watching it due to it's horribleness*
You're dead!

Why not?
Here.
Citizen Kane (1941)
I'm so pissed off right now... I watched this film yesterday, it was on my watchlist for a long time now and it was one of those movies I knew I couldn't let unseen!
However, all the "best movie in the history" hype that this movie have surrounding it totally blew it for me! I can't rate it, I can't say if I liked it and I can't say if it's a masterpiece or not! I spent the entire movie trying to see why it is the best movie ever and I ended up missing the whole point...
I have to rewatch it and then maybe then I can have an opinion about it!
We watch Point Break again on the big screen this semester including films like Wolf of Wall Street and Gravity. I'm very excited!
