Not a huge animated fan but I will be watching some animated films along the way. :D

12th April 2014

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975, 100 mins) - I liked this film a lot. It's just so different to anything I have ever seen. The scenes when they first meet the people at the mansion were fantastic and my favorite. Some of the "arty" scenes were great too, like the lips at the beginning. I was smiling throughout most of the film and I thought I disliked musicals. I really did enjoy this a lot even though there were a few scenes that got a little "too-weird".

There are a lot of great musicals out there. Don't be hatin'.

Maybe I got a bad introduction to them in life. ;)

Care to name few? :3

Here are some of my favorites...

All That Jazz
Dancer in the Dark
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Meet Me in St. Louis
Grease
Cabaret
Moulin Rouge! (I think you'd like this one)
Singin' in the Rain
South Park: Bigger, Longer And Uncut :p

Well I recommended one animated film anyway, Perfect Blue, and I'll be very sad if you don't watch it. :)

Personally I can't stand musicals, and I must confess I didn't like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. But it is a good movie for sure, and Susan Sarandon was lovely in it.

Well Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Merry Poppins, and The Wizard of Oz are the musicals I've liked the most though I could still do without the singing. :P

Rhys
04-12-14, 01:36 PM
Thanks for the suggestions! I've added a few to my watchlist. I'll definitely give Moulin Rouge a watch in the near future. =D

Zotis, I've added that too. :)

I'll be anticipating your review. Oh I just thought of another movie I was meaning to recommend, Caliber 9. It's a 70's Italian crime movie by Fernando Di Leo.

12th April 2014 cont,

Pulp Fiction (1994, 154 mins) rewatch - yeah, this film is a masterpiece and not only because I love Uma Thurman. This film has great cinematography, editing, storyline, pace, humor, acting and music. This really is Tarantino at his finest but I can't place it above Kill Bill right now because I just love that movie way too much. It's been a while since I've watched this film and totally forgot about some of the stuff that happened in it. This was the first time I've watched it properly and taken in what was happening throughout the whole film. This film a day challenge has changed my view on film and has allowed me to enjoy film even more than before.

IF YOU DON'T AGREE WITH ME THEN I'M GONNA HAVE TO GO MEDIEVAL ON YO' ASS!!

Since you liked The Rocky Horror Picture Show, check out the musical called Phantom of the Paradise, it's fabulous. Also, I couldn't get into the film but you might like Repo! The Genetic Opera. Definitely check out Cabaret that Swan mentioned, amazing film.

The Wizard of Oz (1939, 102 mins) - a fantastic musical which I missed out on watching for 18 years now. How? I don't really know if I'm honest. I enjoyed this film a lot and found it to be a lot of fun.

Saw (2004, 103 mins) rewatch - a decent thriller with a good ending but nothing incredibly special and if I recall it was the best out of all of them. I'll rewatch the other ones too... probably. Although the last two will be first watches I think.

Swan

It's very possible. :)

Zotis
04-13-14, 07:33 PM
Kubrick's not a director... he's a DEMIGOD!!!

So... you're going to watch all the Saw movies eh? Hrmm... of course you're entitled to... in my professional (okay amateur) opinion only the first one was worth watching. If you like violent movies though I highly recommend Ichi the Killer (2001). But you HAVE to watch the uncut version, because the regular version cuts out all of the most violent and sexually disturbing parts and it absolutely ruins the movie because its disturbing violence and sexuality is the whole point of it. It is not one of those "violence just for the sake of it" movies though, the plot, dialogue, and characters are fantastic as well. It's about Yakuzas and an emotionally stunted dork who is actually a deadly killer.

Rhys
04-13-14, 07:37 PM
I've heard of that because I was going to research Yakuza films! I'll give it a watch sometime (and I'm only watching Saw when I'm tired or doing some light college work). Thanks for the suggestion!

Zotis

Oh dang, Audition (1999), you have to watch that. It is a masterpiece, a cult classic of Japanese horror brutal, shocking, and disturbing.

There's also this movie called Election (2005) which I highly recommend. I thought it was about Yakuzas, but it's actually about the Triads.

Audition (1999, 115 mins) - thanks, this film has probably scarred me for life. Just kidding, but wow this film was creepy. Brutally realistic and super strange. I didn't completely understand it but I think I do now after reading some stuff. The Shining (1980, 113 mins) - I liked it. But I'm very confused. I like this sort of thing though. I will rewatch very soon and look at some videos and explanations. Also, my next watch will be the directors cut. I'm not rating it just yet.

My summary of The Shining's plot:

A man takes a job as the caretaker of a resort that is closed for the season. He moves in with his family and they get settled. He begins to go insane and sees manifestations of ghosts. His son also has a supernatural experience which leads him to call for help from an outsider and write "Murder" backwards so that his mother eventually sees it in the mirror and is alerted that they might escape.

Does that clear anything up for you? Or was it too basic and there were more subtle things you didn't get?

So I just finished watching Room 237 which is the documentary for the Shining and hidden meaning and I am shocked. However, I don't know what to believe to be honest.

Zotis
04-16-14, 02:06 PM
That's interesting, but what kind of things were you wondering about and what did you learn from the documentary? Not that I'll be much help since I only watched it once years ago and didn't dig too deeply into its meaning. I owe it a re-watch for sure, but my to watch list is massive and growing like an inter-dimensional beast. So I'm not sure when I'll get around to it. But I may bump it up some notches to give you some feedback.

First it is said to make points about the indians (nothing I know much about to be honest as a Brit), the Holocaust and even the first Lunar Landing (being faked?) .

I've never seen the "Kubrick European Cut" of 113 minutes. I did see the 146 minute version once at the theatre before he cut 2 minutes at the end. But otherwise I've only seen the 144 minute one.

As far as Room 237 goes, I personally take none of the "theories" very seriously, although it's mildly interesting as a sociological study of how movies drive the watchers insane. :)

Yeah, none of that is ringing any bells. Well unfortunately it came out in 1980 so I won't be watching it for the 70's MoFo, but we'll see. If I get in the mood I may pop it on.

I personally love Horror when it's done well, but not in general. The Exorcist and Alien were my first loves. :P

I was unsure at first with the Shining, my first thoughts are on the previous page. I knew there was more to it so I looked into it, even watched the documentary whilst doing my college work (mainly focusing on the documentary xD). I do this the idea of it a lot now and I will rewatch it. Do doubt. I gave it an 85 for now, but that could increase dramatically now I have some more contextual information.

As for The Usual Suspects, that was an early film I watched. January I think, it was very different for me and I feel like I was only just starting to adapt to new forms of cinema, so I probably missed a lot to be honest. Maybe it would be worth looking at it again? :)

I watched The Usual Suspects few months ago, maybe one month before you joined something like that but it was not that long, surprised? I didn't watch it when it came out,my excuse is I was 2 years old :D ...I can adjust easy to situation so I can watch Dracula from 30s now and after that watch 300 I wouldn't mind.Watching it again may be a good thing,if you have time go for it.You know that felling when you want to jump around and talk with everyone about movie? That is how I felt after watching TUS,pretty sick :D ...

Inception is also in my top 10 list(you probably know this but I'm big thriller fan) and I recommend it,people tend to say movie is just "meh" or even bad...Well we all love different things,I don't judge it because I didn't find Alien so good as everyone say it is,still it was good movie. :D

Yeah, I'm not so good to adapting to something straight away, I'll have to be in a thriller mood, or comedy mood ect. and stick to that.

I just too a look at your top 10 and we share a few titles. American Psycho used to be on mine but I've watched a lot of great content recently and it's taken a hit and dropped to 17 on my top 100 that I am making.

A lot of people have told be Inception is good, but most say its not really that hard to understand and it's not even that great. But I don't care too much for my real life friend opinion to be honest because they all seem to have the worst taste. XD

I mean one said meh to Kill Bill, Shawshank and even Clockwork... so yeah their opinion is invalid in my books. ;)

Blade is not really worth watching if you ask me. I mean it's no The Shining or Donnie Darko if you know what I mean. It's more of a generic action movie. Good for some lighthearted entertainment if you're watching it with someone who's not a movie buff.

-KhaN-

Man,ofc it is not The Shining and Donnie Darko ,its not even close,I never said it is,dont putt words into my mouth...I just said let her watch Blade because she will see better vampires and decant action flick...Not worth watching really? You never wanted to watch good action movie without thinking, just enjoy it?It is a decant movie.

Rhys
04-17-14, 08:12 AM

Casablanca (1942, 102 mins) - definitely not my thing unfortunately. At least not right now, the context and story really didn't engage me at all and I unfortunately found it boring. I won't give it a rating because I'm obviously part of a minority here. Don't hate me.

I fell same way about it.Don't be scared do tell your rating, but yea I know what you mean,I said Alien was decant movie. :D

Saying Alien is decent is far from anything controversial or shocking.

Anyway, a shame that you didn't enjoy Casablanca, because I think it's a great film. There seems to be a few around here who feel the same as you though. For me it has everything I love about classic films: complex and cynical characters and relationships, brilliantly written dialogue, and just an overall irresistible charm and elegance in its style.

The "problem" with Casablanca is that it's so good that many people don't notice. The acting and dialogue is so effortless that it comes across as boring to some, instead of awesome which they are. Michael Curtiz's staging and pacing is also missed because it can seem bland, but look closer. But expectations and awareness do play a part, as they always do with most movies. :)

Anyway, I haven't seen Casablanca yet, but it's very high on my To Watch list. I avoided it for a long time because I wanted to wait until I was in the right frame of mind to appreciate a classic film. I haven't watched too many films older than the 60's. But I am at the point now where I feel ready to appreciate it, so as I said I'll watch it soon. I actually can't wait.

I liked V for Vendetta a lot too, but you should read the graphic novel. It's a lot better. I was reading the wikipedia article on Alen Moore yesterday and found this interesting:

"Moore was quoted as saying that the comic book had been 'specifically about things like fascism and anarchy. Those words, "fascism" and "anarchy," occur nowhere in the film. It's been turned into a Bush-era parable by people too timid to set a political satire in their own country.'"

Hey! I also do film studies at A level. I've wanted to do something like this for so long, i'm sick of people talking about films i've never seen so I'm thinking of starting this as well. I've been so busy revising lately though I might just do it weekends or a few times through the week.

The last film i've seen is Carrie (1976) so if you haven't already then watch that. I enjoyed it, but I love horror films!

Indeed. It has a very dense atmosphere that represents the current teenager/young adult spirit of times as like The Beatles did 5 decades ago. I strongly identified with film and it's depiction of late teenager life. A great movie overall. Rate it 8.5/10.

I found it quite forced and melodramatic. But that's what happens when you don't "grasp" a movie. I guess I will try to watch it again when I have the time but for now it feels like a plain mediocre 1940's melodrama (well The Wind Rises is a Japanese animated attempt at a 1940's American melodrama but it kinda of works for me).

Saying Alien is decent is far from anything controversial or shocking.

Aliens is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. It's about as respected and famous as Casablanca in it's respective genres. I rated Alien twice as high as Casablanca (5/10 and 10/10). So yes, it is heresy to not think Aliens is great.

I find it's style to be completely out of my tastes though. I don't like the mid 20th century American culture and artstyle. I don't know why, it just feels "weak" to me, I find 1980's American culture to be much more interesting, stuff that epitomizes 1980's culture such as The Terminator and Back to the Future feel much better than stuff that epitomizes mid 20th century US culture such as Casablanca and Sunset Boulevard. I guess I cannot identify with it given it's completely removed from my life (it's another country and another culture that existed a long time before I was born).

I see. That's a good argument to use when some people don't love my favorite movies and TV series as well. There is something called taste, to me, stuff like Casablanca does not cut.

Pre 1960's movies? Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi is the way to go. Bergman has some interesting stuff as well made before 1960 such as Wild Strawberries.

And also, watch Forbidden Planet, it's is a great 1950's science fiction film with great special effects for it's time and a very interesting concept.

A Clockwork Orange (1971, 136 mins) - this film was fantastic and unlike anything I have ever seen before. It's hard for me to review this film to the nature of it but I will try my hardest. I loved the soundtrack and I liked the"theatrical" acting (if you get what I mean?) . The story was complicated and complex but brilliant. Guaporense is Brazilian but is certainly heavily invested in Japanese culture to the point of weeabooism sometimes. Ozu and Mizoguchi are quite possibly the two greatest directors the world has ever seen, and I don't think Kurosawa comes close to them, but Mikio Naruse, whom Guap didn't mention, is the closest to being in their league out of the Japanese studio system of that era.

The Graduate (1967, 106 mins) - a fantastic film with beautiful music, a great story and brilliant acting. Much better than I was expecting. The music for me was one of the greatest things in this film especially since I'd already heard of these songs on multiple occasions after being shown Simon and Garfunkel by my step dad. Music seems to be one of the most powerful mediums used in film, at least in my opinion and it's definitely one of the reasons that I love Clockwork so much.

Also VERY quotable.Hmm... I feel a movie needs to be nearly flawless in its construction and composition, needs superb acting and directing, and has to have an extra something special in its content and technique to qualify as a great movie. James Cameron can't compete with Ridley Scott. The criteria you mentioned makes the movie decent, but to be fair the acting was only exceptional from Sigourney Weaver. And while the movie was very entertaining, it was significantly lacking in some of the most basic fundamental characteristics of film. The marines were stereotypical jocks with little to no personality serving as little more than cannon fodder. The plot also wasn't very strong.

A couple examples of unrealistic elements:

The android should have been on the company's side, like the android in the first film. His sympathy was not calculated or explained, not robotic in any way.

There is no reason why the little girl should have survived. Holing up in a little shaft like area when the aliens can break through floors and ceilings just fine, and going out and about to get food and stuff, she would have at least gotten picked off at some point before the soldiers arrived. They just wanted a little girl to survive to be cute and inspire sympathy in the viewers.

The Return of the Living Dead (1985, 91 mins) - well, thanks for the suggestion because this is now my favorite Zomcom (but only by a small margin). It's very funny at times, especially the scene where we see the headless zombie running around and everyone screaming and going frantic. Films rarely make me laugh but this one did. I like the cartoon looking practical gore and it reminded me a lot of Evil Dead. I even preferred this film to the Evil Dead movies. Very rewatchable too!

It should be noted the filmmaker behind this project, Dan O'Bannon, was also the creative force behind Alien, writing the films' script, and coming up with the creature. A very talented gentlemen.

Amélie (2001, 122 mins) - well, I wasn't expecting it to be this good! Amelie is one of the most beautifully shot films I have ever watched. The story was incredible intriguing and pretty strange (this is a good thing. I like strange movies). I loved the characters, the narrating and the overall plot. It's definitely a film that will need a re-watch in the future. Welcome to my top 10 Amélie.

If you've not seen it before, Heat is on Channel 4 tonight and, as you were talking about watching some older films, The Man In the White Suit is on BBC4 at 7pm, while The Graduate is on ITV3 at 10pm.

Thanks! I watched "The Graduate" a few days ago, I liked it a lot. I have some other films planned for tonight but I appreciate the info. "Heat" definitely looks great but I think the next longer film on my list to watch is 2001. I might watch it tomorrow. I'll take a loot at "The Man In the White Suit" on iMDb and probably add it to my watchlist. :)

Black Hawk Down (2001, 144 mins) - a good war film but this wasn't completely "for me". I just watched it because my mum wanted to watch something with me and she likes true stories. She liked it, but I don't think she loved it. I think people who like war films a lot will like this film a lot more than what I did. I still enjoyed it but I wasn't crazy about it. However I did like that they said not to leave a man behind on multiple occasions.

Kids (1995, 91 mins) - a good film which serves it's purpose of shocking it's audience and sure, it goes a little deep in parts but that's really it. It doesn't go many places, it just takes place over a short time showing some of the things that some teengers get intoand then ending as it did. I didn't believe a lot of the film. Worth a watch... I guess, I just watched it because I'm trying to look at some smaller directors and Harmony Korine is also linked to this.

Pleasantville (1998, 124 mins) - I kind of lost interest in this movie, but I'm pretty tired so it might need a rewatch. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968, 148 mins) - although, like I said before, Sci-Fi's aren't my thing, 2001 was pretty great. I enjoyed it despite becoming lost towards the end. Naturally, I looked up some explanations and I now have a fairly good idea of the film. It's a film that needs multiple watches I think. The acting was great and the visuals were amazing, especially for 1968. It's not going to make my top 10 but I did enjoy it and maybe after a rewatch or two in the future I may start liking it more.

2001: A Space Odyssey bored me a bit the first watch, the second time though I started to understand what was going on and I appreciated it a lot more. It's definitely not for everyone, because it doesn't try to appeal to a general audience or be entertaining. It's just sheer brilliance. True art will never be understood by very many people.

I saw it in the '60s and early '70s and most the people at the Saturday matinees were my age. It was number 1 the first three weeks and 3 of the next 7. I think the amount of druggies watching it when it first came out is greatly exaggerated. They did eventually flock to see it, but that was later when they changed the advertising and it was't #1.

So if this does end up being the last letter, I just want you to know that I was in a bad place before I started high school, and you helped me. Even if you didn't know what I was talking about or know someone who's gone through it, you made me not feel alone. Because I know there are people who say all these things don't happen. And there are people who forget what it's like to be 16 when they turn 17. I know these will all be stories someday. And our pictures will become old photographs. We'll all become somebody's mom or dad. But right now these moments are not stories. This is happening. I am here and I am looking at her. And she is so beautiful. I can see it. This one moment when you know you're not a sad story. You are alive, and you stand up and see the lights on the buildings and everything that makes you wonder. And you're listening to that song and that drive with the people you love most in this world. And in this moment I swear, we are infinite."

Don't worry. I'm also one of those more 'generous' people when it comes to rating/reviewing films. It's no sin tending to see the more positive aspects of things instead of always pointing out the negative stuff. Yes, it's important to be critical and it's always good to skeptically point out certain flaws or things that don't work, but when you liked something, you liked something. You can't change that. It doesn't make your opinion less valuable. ;)

Ratings aren't that interesting anyway. It's much more interesting to read the reasons why someone liked or disliked a certain film/piece of music/book/story/whatever.

I still prefer Hellraiser but yes it was great. I'll watch all of them too probably. :)

Scream 2 is good, Scream 3 isn't that good if I remember correctly, and Scream 4 is probably my second favorite of the series.

Scream is brilliant and on the HK 100. Drew's death is horrible, though. :(

Drew's death is brilliant if you consider the marketing.

Oh, it works fantastically well. She was offered the role of Sidney, but chose Casey for that reason. Great for the film, bad for me, though. :(:D

Scream 2 (1997, 120 mins) - not quite as good as the first but I still thought it was very good. Is it me or does Mickey look quite a lot like a young Jack Nicholson?

City of God (2002, 130 mins) rewatch - this is a rewatch for my film studies exam. It's a good film, with an interesting plot. The cinematography is nice too. I think it is a little overly long though.

Scream 3 (2000, 116 mins) - decent but definitely the worst of the 3 I've watched so far. I'm going to watch number 4 now and will then be ready to rank them. I enjoyed this though despite people saying it wasn't good.
My Rating: 75/100

Scream 4 (2011, 111 mins) - well they most definitely pulled this one off. Wow, this was pretty fantastic and comes very close to being as good as the first addition. When I first saw Scream 4 in shops, without seeing any of the Scream movies I just assumed that it was just another one of those crappy franchises which a decent first movie that soon rapidly diminishes in quality with the next films. But it really isn't. Scream is pretty brilliant, even the 3rd movie (which is the worst), is still pretty good. Scream is definitely my favorite 4-movie franchise. If they do make another one, which I kind of hope they don't, I really hope that it is as good as this one or at least as good as the third. However, I'd be happy if the left it at four because the ending of this one was pretty brilliant.

P.S - I gave the first movie a slightly higher rating than what I originally gave it. I've been tweaking my list a lot to get it in proportion.

My Rating: 83/100

Oh gosh Scream? Really? lol... meh, I only watched the first one and it kinda sucked. I assume the series gets progressively worse.

You haven't seen Nightmare on Elm Street? I think you might like it. It kinda has a similar feel to Hellraiser I think. And it's incredibly popular. The Hills Have Eyes is another of his "famous" "classics."

I just watched a trailer for My Soul To Take (2010), and wow is it ever as stereotypical as a Hollywood slasher could be. 2 Dimensional plot about a bunch of unknowns who can't act getting killed off one by one by a multiple personality skitzo serial killer. The trailer was so boring I had to turn it off. I'd never be able to sit through the actual film. Looked "entertaining" though. I'm sure lots of people will like it even though it isn't a remotely realistic portrayal of mental health sickness.

Yeah, it does look fairly bad. But something that could be good when you just wanna' relax or something maybe?

The Conjuring (2013, 112 mins) - I thought this was pretty brilliant. It made me jump many times and I thought that the story was pretty good. It was pretty hyped but I think it lived up to it mostly. The cinematography was pretty great too. One of the scariest films I have watched so far.

A Nightmare On Elm Street, the original, of course, is a masterpiece of horror filmmaking. It's up there with Halloween and The Exorcist.

Léon: Extended Cut (1994, 132 mins) - a fantastic film which proved to be a lot better than expected. Amazing story, brilliant acting (some of the best child acting I have ever seen), great music and likable characters. Very , very, VERY good and it easily makes my top 10.
