I think it's pretty telling that this is actually the first time I've watched a Shyamalan film in almost a decade and also the second actual Shyamalan film I've watched (after The Sixth Sense, which was alright at first even though I already knew the twist before watching and haven't given much thought to since).
Most of Shymalan's movies are like this those; actually I think it works better for The Village, Lady In The Water, or The Happening actually.

A film isn't tense and the thrills don't work, if the actors don't react as if what is happening on the screen was real!...and often they didn't do that, especially with the alien encounter scenes.
