Salem's Lot

I was excited about this remake when I first heard of it. I thought that the FIRST attempt was really pretty good but could have taken advantage of an opportunity for a few improvements.

At the end of part one last night of the NEW Salem's Lot, I couldn't help but wonder 'why?'

There is no noticeable improvement of character, no improvement of setting, and the vampiric elements are actually less 'in your face' than the previous attempt.

For me, it will all rest on Rutger Hauer and how he looks as Barlow. If it's not scarier than this:

then I'll have to call it four hours of wasted time.

I watched this last night as well, and while it had quite a few chilling moments, I found it rather hackneyed. I liked the direction and the fact it was shot in widescreen was also pleasing, but many of the sets looked like, well, sets. The interior of the house looked like a bunch of styrofoam pieces that had been airbrushed poorly and the cemetary set was a tiny set in an open field, a far cry from the overgrown, thicketed graveyard from the origial film. The kids weren't developed properly either, and when they are attacked in the woods, the scene had to rely on atmosphere alone (which was done pretty well) as you barely knew who the kids were, let alone cared for them.

There were some good scenes, and some spooky situations, but I still couldn't shake the whole "This is a TV movie" feeling, widescreen or no.

Was there a bunch of friendly vampires and a nazi in it like Return to Salems Lot?

I watched this new "Salem's Lot" a couple weeks ago, and I could have warned you it was rather a waste of time. A good cast wasted.

Oh, well.
