Unrequired Sequels

Tools

It is very rare that I can honestly say I have seen a sequel to a film and thought "you know what? That stood up."

They exist though in films like:

Scream 2
Terminator 2
Aliens
Robocop 2
Home Alone 2 - Lost in New York (no really, I love that film)
Back to the Future 2

Five films I think were decent enough films, it's just a shame that for each and everyone one of those the follow up was just terrible (funny how that works) but I think creating and making a sequel to satisfy fans is a very hard thing to do (aside from "Sharknado 2 - the second one" 'cos that is gonna be UNBELIEVABLE!). I think there is so much expectation and a core guidance that trying to live up to that is almost an impossible task.

I for example have just seen they are making "How to train your Dragon 2". Now I liked the first one, but didn't we already learn to train one? Is there gonna be some funny dialogue where someone says "how do you do that?" then the kid from the first one says "Oh I can teach you how to train a dragon 'too'" and winks at the audience?

Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh but I just don't see the point, the first one is a lovely film and hey, if I am wrong throw a hedgehog at me but I just don't see what this film is going to offer in the way of expanding a story that was already told.

Do you have any you either loved or hated?

I'd have liked to have seen a decent sequel to RoboCop... but the one that was made was poop.

It became a parody of the satire.

T2? Really? And Aliens?

Two of the best sequels ever made imho.

Halloween II - follows on from the original almost seamlessly and makes for a very entertaining watch that retains some of the original's best qualities

The Lost Boys 2
Highlander 2
Speed 2
Basic Instinct 2
Blair Witch 2
S. Darko
Escape from L.A.
The Ring 2
Wild Things 2
American Psycho 2
In fairness I like Escape from LA. Was actually my first intro to Snake Plisken.

But I will also add just about every Disney direct to DVD sequel. I mean really, Disney I love ya but do you really need the money?

They made a second one?! I have just read about it on IMDb and it basically sounds like the same film but having looked at the trailer it's worse.

Agreed, I do not see any reason for that film to exist (well aside from the obvious cash cow). It has been a long time since I have seen it but I would suggest it does not get better with time. The only thing I seemed to remember liking was it had "Disposable Teens" by Manson on the soundtrack.

i've fail ...

All those Marvel sequels suck.

Sequels, IMO, aren't as groan worthy as most remakes. There's way more good ones than your list, though some are good for weird reasons.

For example, the Friday the 13th sequels, especially 6-Jason X are great campy ridiculousness. The same with Nightmare on Elm Street 3-5.

There's Indiana Jones, Star Wars...

I just went back and re-read your original post. Are you saying those listed are bad?!?!?!?!

Forget this thread, that's insane! Aliens, T2, and Back to the Future 2 and 3 are great. I'm deciding that all sequels, even Alien 4, are amazing just because I feel like it.

Most of the Saw sequels

Um... NO.

3 and 4, sure. But not 2.

EDIT:

Oh wait, you're saying it's a good sequel. Okay. Thanks.

No no no he said he liked Scream 2, but so many other sequels suck.
Oh, maybe I misread it twice?

I'm so confused by the original post...

Bottom line, there's tons and tons of good sequels. Complain about remakes and 3D instead.
