The Road Home (1999) - Wo de fu qin mu qin (Chinese)

The Road Home (1999) is a romantic drama directed by Yimou Zhang and stars the actor Honglei Sun and the actress Ziyi Zhang, who was also one of the leads in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon a year later. This movie was their cinematic debuts. It's a very simple story of how two people met and fell in love in rural China, based on author Bao Shi's novel Remembrance. The cinematography is gorgeous and the acting is excellent. I'd give the movie a 3.5/4.0. It may make my top 10 movies of all time.

Any particular reason why you liked it so much? I've seen it before, and I liked it a lot, as well. However, I can't really recall anything about it, so I think another viewing is in order.

Is this the one that is told in flashback with the framing narrative of the modern-day relatives of one of the protagonists told in black and white? I saw a bunch of Zhang's films (including this) around the time this came out in theaters in the US, I think they were all pretty good but I don't remember this one quite as well as Raise the Red Lantern and To Live.

I love foreign movies -- they show me how people live in other countries and in other times.

In this movie I was able to watch the day-to-day life in a rural Chinese village under Mao. And it's a love story -- that's usually good, in my book. And how can you not like watching Ziyi Zhang for a couple of hours.

Yes. The son of the couple comes to the rural town after his father dies.

Another good movie by the same director (Yimou Zhang) is Not One Less (1999).

It's a lovely film. The young Ziyi Zhang gives a feisty performance in her first proper film. I love Yimou Zhang's films

I loved The Road Home as well. It's a very touching story. Ziyi Zhang was so endearing....loved her character and loved the ending.

Puma have you seen Together (He ni zai yi qi) (2002) by Kaige Chen? If you haven't, I'd recommend it. T'is also a touching story you might like.
