Best Anime Movie

I enjoyed "Lion King" myself.
That's a Disney film, and certainly not anime.

Lately I would put these films at the top:

Akira - Still amazing, all hand drawn, with a very cool concept behind it.

Perfect Blue
- Dark, surreal, chilling... This story of a young pop star that gets stalked by a fan has some disturbing material in it. Right up my alley...

Wings of Honneamise - Wow. What a great story about man's dream of going among the stars. I felt inspired after watching this. A must see.

Ghost in the Shell
- Sure everyone chooses this, but it IS good. Aside from a slightly truncated third act, I have trouble finding fault with this film.

Macross Plus - I have a soft spot for Robotech, so I had to include this. Well done.

Of course I have to mention the Miazaki stuff, as I think all of the stuff I have seen from him is good. I tend to like the cyberpunk stuff more, though, so, even though I recognize the superiior quality of his work, the genres he works in aren;t my favorite. See all of it, though.

Although it isn't a film, I must mention the short OVA Serial Experiments:Lain. If Lynch did anime, it would turn out something like this...

Personally, I can't see why people want to see anime sex.
i think at first japenese laws censoring pornography made hentai come about or become more popular in early 1900s... kinda funny censor the real stuff so we can draw some of the most ****ed up **** ever

I've already seen most of the big names mentioned here (Akira, Ghost In The Shell, etc). Anyone got any little-known gems they can recommend? I run my own daily movie reviw site, and we cover Anime from time to time - what should I be watching? Come on, I'm sure some of you guys and gals are experts...

Adi - Comment on what bothered you about Lain? I am curious to see what issues you had with it.
Sorry, I had a brain spasm and mistook Lain for Elfen lied. I have tried watching Lain but gave up after the about 15 minutes...did not understand a thing...

I have to say Akira, amazing animation & story. Unlike a lot of the whiny, annoying Adult swim anime like Inuyasha.

Whoops, double post.

The End of Evangelion is the winner, hands down. Then Grave of the Fireflies, and Ghost in the Shell.

I've never seen Akira.

I'm not into any anime besides Hayao Miyazaki. Spirited Away is amazing, and while I haven't seen Princess Mononoke in a long time, I remember that being great as well.

Registered Creature
Yeah, Spirited Away is a great one, aswell as Princess Mononoke. I have yet to see My Neighbour Totoro.

But, honestly, all of Hayao Miyazaki's films combined do not compare to the brilliance of The End of Evangelion. IMO anyways.

Registered Creature
What, if you haven't watched Neon Genesis Evangelion before? I wouldn't really reccommend watching End of Evangelion then. Otherwise you won't understand absolutely anything that's going on. EoE's the alternate, more 'real world' ending to the series. I guess you could Wiki it for the plot or something, though.

True, but I tend to think of it as one thing broken up into parts... I mean, it's not like there's multiple seasons or something. There are a set number of episodes

Akira. I can't wait for the live action movie(s):
