Movie Tab II

Yes -- that scene where he chases Alva is hysterical. Especially when they're running down the staircase.

Miss Vicky and I watched this together for the first time while doing a commentary. It was quite an experience. The movie is a real gem.
I almost voted for it for the 80s list. I had it on an early draft of the list but took it off at the last second.

It's not really a good movie, but it's fascinating in a train wreck kind of way.

I would have voted for it, but I figured it wouldn't make it, so I thought, why bother?

It made the Mother of God Part II list, though.

Before man was, war waited for him.

Because you don't know what other people are going to vote for. PM me your list of 70s movies, and I will try to watch all of them before the deadline. If two people show interest in a movie, maybe more people will hop on the bandwagon. Then you could vote for the movies you actually love. Yes?

I put a bunch of movies I loved on my '90s list.

It was the biggest disappointment ever.

I think we will start having more variety the further back we go, so two people putting a movie high on their list can possibly sneak it in.

I need to work on my 70s movie watching. My list is still pretty bare so far.

I shouldn't have much trouble when we get to the 60s though. It seems like just about every time I think of an old movie that I like and look it up hoping I can put it on my 70s list, it turns out to be a 60s movie.

I've had the same idea you're having now... and I've seen it not work out.

The only way to get your movies on the list is to put the foreign film lovers on this website into comas that last all throughout the time period when you can send your list in.

Still, if you suspect it doesn't have a chance, you are just throwing away your points.

It pains me thinking about the films from my list that may have stolen precious points away from something more worth being on the list.

You aren't, because the point isn't to get the most films from your list onto the 100. It's to vote for your favourite/best 25 films of the decade. There are no winners or losers... Well, except for you, of course.

the list isn't meant to be a competition. it's supposed to represent the forums taste as a whole, and changing your vote to make it a competition compromises the integrity of the list.

But if you vote for a movie and it doesn't make the list, that's still however many points you assigned it wasted when maybe you could have put another movie down -- a movie that you do love and would have been on the list because more people loved it, too.

Maybe it's not wasteful to you, but I see it as wasteful. I understand what you're saying, but still, when you want your movies on the list, it's wasteful.

I'm not saying that this makes it a competition -- I'm just saying it's wasteful. It's not a competition, but wouldn't you like your movies to get on the list? I know I do. Not as competition for who got the most movies, but just because you love those movies so much that you want to see them on the list.

I say vote for your favorites no matter what, but if you have one that perhaps not many have seen, maybe try to bring some attention to it on the forum. If someone watches it for the first time, and enjoys it and includes it on their list, thanks to you, you may get that movie on the list. I think that would be perfectly fair.

Really surprised that you give Tim Burton's Batman four popcorns Mark, I thought I knew your tastes well but was pretty surprised by that - as I don't think it's that great and wouldn't have said it's a movie you would love that much. If you don't mind me asking, was it on your 80s list?

Class Relations (1984) -

Danièle Huillet & Jean-Marie Straub duo is highly acclaimed among hipster RYMers. Encouraged by high ratings I decided to give it a go. Sadly enough, I didn't like it as much as the majority of people on RYM. There are some good moments here and there. Black'n'white cinematography and specific style, which could be an inspiration for Béla Tarr. There's a moment of stillness and belatarrish monologue as well, but everything's underwhelming and uninspiring.

Don't Torture a Duckling (1972) -

My first meeting with Mr. Fulci and a great positive surprise. It's a giallo film dealing with some heavy topics such as pedophilia, black magic (duh...) and children killings. It's got beautiful music and a nice campy feeling to it, which makes it a little less disturbing than it should be. I mean, we are talking about somebody killing little kids! There's a little subplot of pedophilia only mentioned a few times in the movie and a cool black magic stuff on top of that. Highly recommended if you like giallo.

Army of Shadows (1969) -

Melville does not disappoint and delivers a bleak tale of French Resistance members during the Second World War. In spite of many films glorifying such people, Army of Shadows shows more realistic approach, in which everybody tries to survive, but values such as honour and sacrifice are still important. However, when a friend turns out to be an enemy, you have to get rid off him, no matter the cost or sentiments. Everything from cinematography, through the use of sound to acting is very good. Watch it if you still haven't.
