On the contrary, I think The Brood is his best horror movie along with The Fly, I find it a lot more frightening and disturbing than his other films. Samantha Eggar is amazing, almost coming across as sympathetic, no mean feat considering her character's psychotic nature. It's a really tense and suspenseful film where the violence forms an integral part of the narrative rather than feeling gratuitously tacked on. I say give it another chance.

Oh yeah, and what about Rabid?

Well, Rabid isn't very good or very prolific, unlike Shivers that most Cronenberg fans would have seen. I haven't seen The Brood recently enough to formulate a valid response but do remember when researching my dissertation it was frequently described as one of his 'lesser' films.

I have a real soft spot for Rabid, true it's unintentionally funny exploitation, but it has its moments, is well made and Chambers is surprisingly good. My favourite scene involves a surgeon's finger and a pair of scissors.

So many good movies, so little time.
Mark,

Donovan's Reef rated the same as :

Fort Apache
Young Mr. Lincoln and
Stagecoach

and no 5 stars in the whole bunch (not even The Searchers)?

I think you must have been there with Michaleen Flynn when he said :

"Well, it's a nice soft night so I think I'll go and join me comrades and talk a little treason."

Your friend,

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
I love the guy; why else would I list him? It took me over 90 minutes to make that post. And all the films you listed? I've seen them all at least six times, and Stagecoach at least 12.

By the way,
is the hugest range of ratings, at least in my list. I didn't think my list would be a cliche, but maybe you should check my ratings more often. Most people would raise them at least one popcorn box. I believe that I only give about 10 films
.

I'm happy to see that you give Doc Strangelove an A-. I was under the impression that you found it unfunny, so you must think it's really exciting and suspenseful. You need to check out Paths of Glory ASAP.

Dr. Strangelove reached #14 on my old Top 100 list back in 2005. I haven't re-watched it at all since then, and for what it's worth, while it's a great film and all, you can't really call it "laugh out loud" funny (or maybe you can, different strokes and all, I just don't feel any great need to chuckle at all over it). I just thought A- would be a fair rating - great use of black-and-white, excellent interweaving of the stories and the performances are sublime.

Consider Paths of Glory on my to-do list. Hell, I should get it right now.

Mark, i'm intrigued to know what your 10
films are, i know you're ratings are generally pretty objective so can't be too sure if they're your Top 10 Favourites, favourites being subjective and all.

Welcome to the human race...
Well, I do remember reading in Movie Tab that he gave Elmer Gantry a
(not to mention giving Jaws a 7/5 - yes, I'm serious) so I think it would be reasonable to assume it is his top 10.
