So I was bored and channel surfing, when lo and behold up came The Spy who loved me. O.K., firstly as a 70's kid Moore was the Bond I grew up with, but I rarely watch any of his 7 Bond films, why is this.
My reasons are that Moore looks as agile and tough as a new born baby giraffe, not too mention as stiff as a board. His camp comedic performances and quirky one liners don't seem apt for a man who's profession is deception, subterfuge and killing. His fight scenes are laughable, and lack any real believeability, in fact his unmoveable hair looks a far deadlier weapon than his fists. There is no real sense of danger, especially with the comedic score to accompany many of his scenes, this is more like Carry On Bond with all his smutty inuendo. He even manages to make the obligatory sex scene with Barbara Bach, a stunningly beautiful woman, look dull and wooden.
Why was Moore ever picked in the first place, he is a terrible actor, and not fit to fill Connery's shoes.
So if Moore is the worst, how do the rest rate IMO?
1. Sean Connery- the original and best, and probably the most impersonated," Yesh Mish Monneypenny ". Connery was rough and believeable as Bond, he looked as capable handling fight scenes, as he did smooth talking in his Tux.
2. Pierce Brosnan-brought back the hard edges to Bond's persona, as Connery had in the 60's. Goldeneye is a brilliant Bond film, and helped relaunch the franchise. Not a huge fan of Tomorrow never Dies, but on the whole I like Brosnan, and I am dissapointed that he won't be back.
3. George Lazenby- this might seem contraversial, most people rate him the worst, but IMO Connery was always going to be a tough act to follow, and perhaps if Lazenby had been given more than one film, he might have made the role his own, instead of living in Connery's shadow. As a movie I like On her Majesty's secret service, IMO it is one of the most under-rated films in the franchise. Lazenby took a huge risk with the Bond marrige at the end, but I thought it made Bond more human.
4. Timothy Dalton- not a fan at all of Timothy Dalton, for much the same reason as Moore. I don't rate him as an actor, and again I found it hard to believe in him as a lean, mean , killing machine. The Living Daylights was rubbish, very little in this film to recommend, at least he wasn't as camp as Moore. Licence to kill, was a brave attempt to modernise the Bond franchise, having Bond fight a major drug dealer was an intresting choice, compare it to TND villan, a newspaper magnet!!!
So there you go, just my humble opinion, just to finish off, here's my top 5 Bond films;
1. Dr.No- a major historic event in cinema, and the launch of a cultural icon.
2. You only live twice-Connery on top form, love the start, original twist at the beginning of a movie-GENIUS!!
3. Goldfinger- Great villan, great girl, the original inuendo Pussy Galore, and the car of my dreams. It's probably the film I've seen the most as it seems to play every Xmas on t.v.
4. Live and let die-yep it's a shocker, Moore makes it into my top 5. I remember being scared of this film when I was really young, all that Black Magic, and Jane Seymour, hubba hubba. I love the story of this film, and Moore plays it slightly straighter than normal.
5. Goldeneye-great to see the franchise reborn in such a vigorous way, and in Brosnan a worthy heir to the Bond throne. A gritty more realistic Bond for a new generation.
If you made it this far, you're a 00 agent, kudos for lasting.
