what's the premise of this movie?
->
Set in an imagined modern United States, it follows visionary architect Cesar Catilina (Driver) as he clashes with the corrupt Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Esposito) in determining how to rebuild the metropolis of New Rome as "Megalopolis", a futuristic utopia. The film references the characters involved in the Catilinarian conspiracy of 63 BC, including Catiline and Cicero, in addition to Caesar.

He probably should have done a straight up period piece
What makes you think that would have been better?

I like Roman Republic/Empire movies. Hollywood doesn't tend to make them anymore. So I look forward to Gladiator 2.
That looks like it might be pretty good. Pedro Pascal is on a hot roll!

You mean, "How so?"

But I get it. The plot sounds like something straight from a period piece. When you think about the time period of your average period piece, even if it's a thousand years off, the cultural differences that separate old timey period pieces from modern America may have a couple more blatant similarities to more medieval times. In this case, it's the story's lead source of influence: Ancient Rome.

You see, Hownos, the movie is essentially a New York peplum. The film is partially inspired by Julius Caesar and the separate Catalinarian Conspiracy involving Catalina, Hybrida, Cicero, Lipschitz...

Jokes aside, as a man who's seen more than a good deal of peplums due to mythological love and a keen interest in Italian cinema, I found the little tweaks here and there fun to watch while enjoying the Babylonian comparisons, meaning the comparisons of New York to Ancient Rome much like Babylon's comparison of Hollywood to its titular city. The special effects are likely the finest you can find at this time, but it also serves as a distraction from the story. Some say it's confusing and nonsense. Me, I say it's effing easy.

* #3 = The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone "2020"
Francis Ford Coppola Re-Edit

Extra bold putting III as #3, Coda or not. I agree that it's a definite winner for Coppola, although it made my #8.

About darn time... he's only one of the greatest living directors of our time!
