Here's the options as I see them, and I would be interested to hear what others perspectives are on which they think is the most likely: The movie is bad, and they don't want to release it this year because they want to focus on promoting better movies. The movie is good, and they want to hold it for an Oscars qualifying release, and there's no room for that this year, potentially for one of the actors (Toni Collette, for example, has never won an Oscar, and Eastwood has a pretty good track record of both having cast members nominated, as well as sometimes winning, Oscars, in films that he's directed). Warners doesn't plan to finance any more Eastwood films, and even though Clint would likely like to continue after this film is released, according to World of Reel, Warners still plans on it being his last film, and do in fact want to do a promotional campaign to honor him, and so they're delaying the release because doing that would defer resources from other films they plan to campaign for Oscars this year. I think the third is unlikely, because Clint probably would want to keep his options open to make other films, either for Warners, or potentially another outlet, and an announcement that this will be his last film would likely preclude doing that at his age.
