Careers Killed By One Movie

As for Greg's review, that's a hefty read. I'm not buying the "it's satire" angle, though. However, it did give me a chuckle at the bit where he said "most people have already closed themselves off to the pleasures the film has to offer."

I shut down when I read that he loathes Face/Off. It's official, the guy's a quack.

I'd have put Pearl Harbour and Rat Race as the killers of Jr if I was honest.
Pearl Harbour killed Josh Hartnett's career as well. He made Black Hawk Down the same year, and it was released after Pearl Harbour, and guess what... Harnett's name didn't sell the movie to the masses as Ridley thought it was going to.
Yeah he went away too. Add Hollywood Homicide to the Josh Hartnett stinkers too.

Hartnett was in Penny Dreadful, I wouldn't call that a dead career. As for Jr. I'd say it was Boat Trip that put his career on the line. After that he was in movies like Norbit. But he's slowly making a comeback now.

A lot of the critics I respect, and some of my favourite online reviewers (non critics) whose opinions I also take seriously think that Showgirls is fantastic, I'm looking forward to eventually watching it.

Yeah, I'm just messing about. I actually don't care if everyone loves it, to each his own. But I wish you luck when you do decide to watch it.

Alright then... Sharon Stone...

A string of hits from the 80s and 90s... then, she was in Catwoman, a movie that also stunted Halle Berry's career.

Stone then decided to go along with Basic Instinct 2... and since then, ok, she has had movies and roles, but I doubt a single person can name one without checking Wiki and IMDb first to see what they were.

---

Halle Berry, almost ended her non-existent career with The Flintstones, then brought herself back with X-Men and Monster's Ball.
Then threw it all away with Catwoman.
Since Catwoman, nothing notable, and even her X-Men appearances have been cut down and she's now even been replaced by a new actress.

Showgirls is the one and only weak spot in Verhoeven's filmography.

Lori Petty, could have had the world in her hands.

Point Break, A League Of Their Own, Free Willy...

Then, she binned her credibility with Tank Girl... and decided to shave her head.
Since then, most of her stuff doesn't even have a page on Wikipedia. Which says a lot.

What killed Whoopi Goldberg's career?

Yes, she got old (older?), and yes she went on The View, but Whoopi used to be in movie-after-movie-after movie, and suddenly, you don't see Whoopi Goldberg movies anymore.

Somebody mentioned Rat Race for Cuba Gooding, Jr. -- Whoopi was in that movie. I used to love that movie. Probably would still like it. I don't know if I've seen Whoopi in movies much since Rat Race.

She turns up in little things now and then, but she's never the big star anymore. Her last big movie was probably 1999's Girl, Interrupted, and that was a supporting role. Did Girl, Interrupted interrupt Whoopi's career? Or was it more like 1998's How Stella Got Her Groove Back? Or The Deep End of the Ocean? Which I've never even seen a picture of Whoopi in that.

I agree with both of these. Sharon Stone is practically non-existent these days, she seems to be in mostly B films, if that. Halle Berry is just barely staying afloat. Though I read recently that she's trying to get her fans to contact Fox and tell them to make a Storm Spin-off. Doubtful it'll happen considering her scenes in the X-Men films are being cut.

She's currently in Orange is The New Black. But in my humble opinion, she's still great and generally deserves more screen time.

Heh! Woopi Goldberg!

Yeah, star of the 80s and 90s.

I think it was the year 2001 itself tbh, SC.
Rat Race, Call Me Claus, Monkeybone... all released in 2001. All gash. All have Whoopi in them (heh! Whoopi).

Watching The Happening, I thought Mark Wahlberg was done, but of no fault of his own. I think he was thinking that too while performing, it was the truest fear we could see.

Classic example: Elizabeth Berkley...Showgirls. She was on the fast track in Hollywood, but not after that movie.
Oddly enough, years latter and Showgirls has started gaining some respect.

Everybody loves her and that movie, though.

Why is it if a woman plays a stripper in a big, popular, NC-17 movie, her movie career has to be over? If women wanna be all about girl power and all that, bring back Elizabeth Berkley! Give her another big role! Stop punishing people for their '90s stripper roles. Matthew McConaughey played a stripper in Magic Mike and one year later, he's got an Oscar.

Jim Carrey made himself a laughing stock with Kick-Ass 2.

I liked the movie, and well, the movie was actually decent as far as I'm concerned.

But he decided to go on a public rant before it was released about how he hates movie violence.
Considering his earliest hits and career defining roles, had violence in them.

Since then... erm... where's he been?

Since then... erm... where's he been?
Accused of ruining the life of his former girlfriend, who committed suicide.

Just like every other man in Hollywood right now -- Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, etc.
