Suggestions for musical films with dark undertones?

During a Hollywood Writers Strike, Joss Whedon went and made Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (2008) and released it on the internets.

But Not Slight of Mind or Tongue...
The most depressing musical film I ever saw is Dancer in the Dark starring Bjork. With Lars Von Trier directing, you know its going to be weird and dark!!

The Saddest Music in the World (2004) is one of Canadian genius Guy Maddin's most accessible flicks (if any of his film's could be considered accessible in mainstream terms?), with a demented legless beer baroness hosting a contest to see which nation produces the saddest music.

Repo! The Genetic Opera was the one I came in here to mention,
I should've thought of that!

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a perverse movie. I can't understand it that so many cable channels think it I suitable for families and/or children.

It's nowhere near as perverse as Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...talk about perverse.

Agreed.

The "scary tunnel" scene is messed up, but there's very little besides I would refer to as a "dark undertone".

Does Clockwork Orange count? It has some great music and singing and is very dark.

I think referring to A Clockwork Orange is the ultimate stretch...I have never heard anyone refer to that movie as a musical in any way, shape, or form.

But it has music, so it is a music-al movie! No?

Here are my ideas of musicals with dark undertones:

Wizard of Oz

West Side Story

Sweeney Todd

Sound of Music

Phantom of the Opera

Fantasia (the original 1940 film)

Fantasia 2000
