The Hidden, Logan's Run, Silent Running, Saturn 3, Demon Seed, Westworld/Futureworld, ... Of The Apes movies, Dark Star, The Andromeda Strain.

If you like the really bad, too, then Starcrash.

If you must watch sci-fi, then the 70's is where it's at.

Starcrash??

That's a hidden gem alright! I liked that cheesy flick!

Most great sci fi made in the past 30 years is anime. Animation allows for more creative freedom than live action while working on a smaller budget and hence doesn't need to be dumbed down for mainstream audiences. Also animation doesn't date with time while special effects do.

Examples of great sci-fi animation films:

Ghost in the Shell; Arise (film series, 2013)
Ghost in the Shell 2 (2004)
Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Patlabor 2 (1993)
Patlabor (1989)
Gunbuster (1988)
Akira (1988)
Wings of Honneamise (1987)
Nausicaa (1984)

The Angry Red Planet (1959). The "special effects" on Mars are actually pretty cool. And of course you need to make sure you see Metropolis (1927).

I may go back to hating you. It was more fun.

The Man From Earth comes to mind when I think of this topic. Have not watched it in years, but I remember it being a great little small film.

Master of My Domain
I recommend 2001. It's such a hidden gem and a true masterpiece that nobody knows about.
