Motel Hell

(1980, directed by Kevin Connor)

More and more these days... I hate horror movies. But this is a horror movie from 1980 -- the beginning of the '80s. And a picture of a pig headed killer in flannel and overalls wielding a chainsaw was on the cover of a famous issue of Fangoria. I like chainsaws... I like '80s horror... I liked this movie. Basically. It's no Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Nightmare on Elm Street. It's really quite crappy. My rating is high for it. But I managed to get through it without turning it off. Barely. I liked the cast, though. Nancy Parsons, the mean gym teacher from the Porky's movies, was great as a horror villain. And Paul Linke was hot as the good cop who happens to be the brother of the cannibal killers. This one wins a little because it was kind of funny and "out there." I hope Captain Spaulding sees it.

I'm not sure what you were expecting.
Well, if you remember I gave a certain Fulci film a "rather" low rating. Look in your favorites if in doubt which one.

I just thought you'd be happy to see such high rating for the kind of exploitation "trash" that you said wasn't my thing. It is, but either it's good for me or really bad. Zombie Flesh Eaters might be my favorite exploitation...

Zodiac (2007)

An excellently crafted thriller from the master of them, David Fincher. I kinda had my doubts with this since it was 2 hours 40 min long and I didn't do so well with the last couple 2 and a half hour plus movies I've watched. This was one of those movies though that was very well-paced with no scene feeling like was too drawn out or getting boring.

Love the look of this movie also. 3 terrific performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr, and Mark Ruffalo as well. Pretty much everything was very well-done!

2 thumbs up!

Women will be your undoing, Pépé
Freebie and the Bean (1974)

Raucous action-buddy-cop-comedy, starring James Caan (Freebie) and Alan Arkin (the Bean), who go to any lengths to get their guy. Good, never-boring 70's fun. Loved it!

Been a looong time since seeing this one, great flick!

First, two tv series:

Fleming; The Man Who Would Be Bond
++ A rather well done rendition of Ian Fleming's life during WWII.

Gunbuster
Thanks Meditation for reminding me about this one. Rather enjoyed it.

And now, two flicks:

(REWATCH) Barbarosa
(1982) Haven't seen this for a few decades, SO VERY glad to have stumbled across it

100 Rifles
- As for seeing Raquel Welch
++++
My attention drifted except for when Raquel would appear

Thirty year old mulberry field
Still Alice - 8/10
Perhaps a film lacking in some technical aspects, but a good script and a great performance. Not nearly as oscar-baitey as I thought it would be.

Pensavo Fosse Amore Invece Era Un Calesse, Massimo Troisi, 1991.
I wonder if this movie is at all known outside of Italy. Massimo Troisi is probably best known for his role in The Postman, which I have actually never seen, before that he made a number of nice comedies in which he outlines his type of humor. Humor which is kinda hit or miss since it's very peculiar and relies heavily on his body language and his strong Neapolitan accent. I personally love his humor, and his take on life. This was not my favorite movie of his but it's still nice and funny, and offers a nice take on what love is. The title literally means "I thought it was love, but it was a horse cart instead", and as Troisi himself explained, stands for all those love stories which after a while reveal themselves to be...just not love. Something else, something entirely different. It could have been a chair, a door, a phone. So why not a horse cart? It's the story of a guy who doesn't really care about his girlfriend, up until the moment she breaks up with him. Then he does everything he can to win her back, only to realize, when he succeeds, than he doesn't love her anymore. Simple, but really well executed, even though the movie seems to be a little dragged along in some parts.
6/10

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Ana Lily Amirpour, 2014.
Visually, this movie is stunning. Amirpour knows where to put her damn camera, knows how to move it around (or not move it at all), knows where to place the actors. The problem is that, if most of the times her competence leads to superb scenes (the one where the Girl follows people around, the one in front of the power plant, the in the Girl's room with the record playing), there are other times in which the movie is just plain boring, to be honest. It's like the movie is lacking a heart, and they tried to switch the heart with a beautiful, polished, silver replica of a heart. Neat, but still not a heart.
Still totally worth watching though. Again, some scenes are terrific, the setting is perfect, and the cat is the best.
7/10

Trying Real Hard To Be The Shepherd

Great look at a very unique individual with a very unique story. Definitely should place nicely on the doc list.

did you watch this because I posted it in the 80's film thread someone wanted?

No, I didn't even see that. Do you like it? It's just a movie I had always wanted to see eventually and then I saw it was on TV, so I watched it.

It was good back in the day... I watched it again about 2 years ago.. maybe 3... and it sucked..

I just dont like 80's horror anymore... its all cheesy!

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
Well, I still like Motel Hell. Rory Calhoun as Farmer Vincent is a hoot. I especially like the way he fattens up his "meats" and uses his tractor when necessary. Of course the chainsaw duel while a female victim is about to be sliced in half is a classic.
