The Lazarus Effect - 5/10

This is the first real let-down for the otherwise immaculate Blumhouse Productions. It's like their version of Pixar's Cars: not strictly speaking terrible, but certainly bad enough to destroy the myth of unerring perfection that they've cloaked themselves in thus far. It was an unfrightening string of missed opportunities populated by poorly rendered and developed characters. It could have been extraordinary, and yet feels like a somewhat better version of Event Horizon / darker version of Lucy.

For anybody who's interested, I have a full review of the film up here.
You must have forgot about Ouija? That HAS to be their worst...

Whiplash (2014)

JK Simmons steals the show as the ruthless music conductor to Miles Teller's aspiring drummer.

I can see why Simmons received so much critical acclaim and the acting awards. He is magnificent.

The movie is truly one of the best I've seen this year, if not the best.

Harakiri (1962) - Masaki Kobayashi

Excellent film. A very dark and painful presentation of the Samurai traditions, unlike Kurosawa...

8.5 out of 10

King of the Ants (2003)

From the director of the Re-Animator comes this low-budget revenge film starring silver screen legends Daniel Baldwin and George Wendt. I was looking forward to this; I knew what it was about, I had heard it was disturbing, and the reviews are very good for a movie like this. I was really digging it for about the first half, as the low budget added to the gritty realism. The movie gradually gets dumber and dumber, and the budget then begins to be a distraction. Brutal and bizarre, and a nice job by the cast, but ultimately a disappointment.

A normal man? For me, a normal man is one who turns his head to see a beautiful woman's bottom. The point is not just to turn your head. There are five or six reasons. And he is glad to find people who are like him, his equals. That's why he likes crowded beaches, football, the bar downtown...

Vivre Sa Vie (1962)

This Godard film is about a young woman's descent into prostitution. This is a subject I have great interest in; I know a lot of escorts, and I know a lot about the sex trade, not as a client, but through some work that I do. Most movies about this subject seem to be mostly unrealistic ala Pretty Woman, or feature women who are abused or on drugs, which is often the case. This movie shows another side that is also rather common-a fairly normal young woman who simply needs or wants money, and easily and willingly gets into the business. It's a solid movie, yet I found it unremarkable except for Anna Karina, who is very watchable, both as a talented actress, and an amazing beauty.

You must have seen Belle De Jour then, what's your take on that?

I didn't like Deneuve at all until I saw Umbrellas of Cherbourg. I think Belle De Jour has a definite edge as the overall movie; I just really loved Karina.

Finished here. It's been fun.

Sorry Swan homie, but this movie sucks balls. Johnny is a despicable piece of sh*^, the score is redundant and irritating as hell, and the movie is more aimless than Lindsay Lohan without her daily dosage of cocaine. The 2nd time definitely wasn't the charm.

Not4me/ 10

6/10 for Get On Up, a biopic of the life of James Brown . I'm a fan so the music was great, the impersonation of Brown was excellent but it felt too padded so was too long.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1 (2013)

My 3rd movie from this director after Antichrist and Melancholia, and I feel similar about all of them-flashes of brilliance, very good acting, and a few dull spots. Lars Von Trier is such a talented filmmaker, but I often get the feeling that he's more interested in himself than he is the audience. I was planning on watching Vol. II today but I think I'll pass. I still want to see Von Trier's Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark.
